I've Seen The Light! I Finally Get It! Go Obama!!!!!!!!!!! Go U.S.A.!!!!!!!
Edited on Wed Mar-30-11 08:25 PM by JFN1
So Mr. Obama is the GREATEST POLITICAL GENIUS who has ever lived. He is unbelievably AMAZING!!

All this time, I thought he was really throwing liberals, the poor, the Constitution, and any meaningful fullfillment of his promises to those of us who elected him, under the proverbial bus. But now I see the TRUTH!! Isn't he incredible??

And I just have to add (I don't mean to gush - no wait, yes I do!) that President Obama's awesomeness continues to be awesomely impressive!!

I'm sure he's got a few of you - a very small few, I am certain - buying into the strategy I am now seeing unfold before my unbelieving eyes he is using to smite our enemies, those Tea Bagger Republicans and their Evil Overlord Corporations! Boo, bad guys!! Booooooooo!!!!!!!

See, if you haven't figured it out yet, our Great President is just PRETENDING to capitulate at every turn to Republican demands! He is just making it look like, through surrounding himself with Wall Street bankster bigshots like little Timmy G. and that super cool guy from GE, and Daley and all those other bigshots, that he all about the status quo for the wealthy! When he agreed to keep Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy in place, that was merely his first step in implementing Plan Long View (that's just my super secret decoder name for it, I'm sure his is waaayyyy cooler), and after the 2012 election he will spring his trap! KA-POWWIE go the bad guys!!

This is such an exciting time to be an American!! I know, it is inconvenient for some of us, maybe even hard or seemingly impossible, what with rising gas and food and clothes and rent and medical bills and payments for this and that and everything else, to make ends meet. And I know some of us will be going to bed hungry tonight, and tomorrow, and for a while to come. And some of us, unfortunately, will probably give our lives as we get through Plan Long View, from insurance company shenanigans, or regulatory failures, or food supply disruption, or maybe a falling apart bridge or something. I promise, as I'm certain Mr. Obama does, your sacrifice will not be in vain. Might I suggest? A picture of President Obama in your living space, will help a bunch, if you need inspiration or a reminder of just what exactly we are fighting for in 2012 - this can go a long way to keeping your spirits ever rising as we gear up to win in 2012 and send those Tea Baggering Repuklickers and their putrid money mongers packing!!!!!!

SHARED SACRIFICE, folks! Our President is telegraphing his plan to us, trying to help us get ready for his great strategy to unfold after he magnanimously spends $1 billion to win in 2012! Keep gathering your pennies for the big fight to come, folks! Obama needs those pennies if he is going to reach that billion dollar mark! Come on, dig deeper and deeper and deeper than you ever have before!! SHARED SACRIFICE!! SHARED SACRIFICE!! Come on, say it with me!! SHARED SACRIFICE!! SHARED SACRIFICE!!

The right wing is SO DAMN SCARY and MIGHTY that our even mightier President has to trick them into believing he is weak and will drop his stated core values in a shot to further that image for those terrible, awful Republicans! Why, if he were to show them how mighty he actually was, they wouldn't get to take all of the rope he is feeding them! And then after we have spent every free penny we have to help him win in 2012, just watch! KA-BLOOEY!!!!!!!! He will throw off his weak-kneed, lilly-livered coward facade, and SHOW THEM THE REAL POWER OF THE PRESIDENT!!!

So start gathering your coins - folding money if you can, too. Skip meals, or only take your meds every other day - or feed the kids shredded newspaper and mayonnaise - they won't know the difference from the bologna you can buy at the store these days anyway! And take those savings and start sending them to our President so he can win in 2012 and show those evil Republicans and Tea Baggerinos and Banksters who is really THE BOSS!!

And don't forget to support your Democratic incumbants! Think yard sales - do you really need three pairs of jeans, two pairs of shoes? You won't need that can opener soon - hock to an unsuspecting neighbor! And then take whatever you raise and ship it off to your Democrat running in 2012!

WE CAN DO THIS! WE CAN WIN EVERYTHING BACK! ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS BELIEVE IN PRESIDENT OBAMA, AND THE U.S.A.!!!!!!

Go Obama!!!!! Go U.S.A.!!!!!!!

160. It's Obvious, and Direct Sarcasm
He's been pretty disappointing, and don't bother listing his "accomplishments." I hear the ratchet clicking back to the left, click, click, click, but the bolt isn't moving.

I had hopes like this, serious hopes, with Clinton in his second term. I though, wow, he just needs to get reelected, then he's going to start really kicking in, getting rid of the ridiculous drug war, stop this crazy shipping of jobs away, make sure the banks are sound, get us back on sound footing again.

Instead, he kicked into globalization free-trading mania, repealed Smoot-Hartley by not vetoing the Gramm, Leach, Bliley bill, did nothing but make sentencing worse on drug laws, the list goes on. I have to give him credit, at least, for balancing the budget, partly on the backs of making welfare run out. He lucked out on the unemployment, as free credit was still flowing, and baby-boomers were in their peak spending years.

Yea, one can hope. My single hope is that he'll keep appointing SC justices that are anti-corporate-citizen. That may be the one sincere hope for Obama, to hang the corporate citizen.

At this point, the Republicans are not a lot worse. I mean, my concern about McCain other than he is nuts was that he'd start a war with Yemen. So, now we're bombing Yemen and Libya, and we're still in Iraq

And nothing has been done for the global warning disaster. Nothing about outsourcing jobs. A lot of the healthcare bill is a joke - I was looking forward to paying 50% of my meds' cost in the donut hole this year until, surprise, the price went up so 50% is pretty much last year's 100%.

out of a HUMONGOUS HOLE! Each day that goes by makes me more and more disillusioned, IF that is at all possible. I would NEVER have thought that I would actually AVOID even listening to ANY of his speeches anymore!

I sincerely am FLUMMOXED by so so many decisions that have been made since he was elected with SUCH enthusiasm. Deflated, defeated and disgusted. It's so hard to even believe anymore, but the very WORST thing is that the Democrats don't have another person who can step up to the plate! So we are stuck! If we DON'T vote for him, we get REPUKE... PUKISM!!

A very sorry state of affairs as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps this post will get me kicked off here, but I find myself CONSTANTLY wondering, WHAT NEXT?? It seems that "we the people" lose again!

There is no doubt about that.

The general public can be convinced to overlook anything, and buy into any Brand that's continually sold to them.

Obama has become a well marketed brand, but he's certainly not a very effective politician at delivering much of substance to constituents. Unless you only consider wealthy people constituents.

Which, unfortunately, means that the Money Primary would never, ever support them, and the Media would never allow them to get any positive coverage. They would be mocked constantly by the supposedly serious media.

But still, they would be an ideal ticket to really restore this country.

Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 11:13 AM by cui bono
1 - That even liberals don't pay attention, probably feeling complacent because "their" guy is in office.

2 - That even liberals have bought the media meme that politics is a team sport and you root for your team no matter what.

Obama is not governing according to the Democratic Party's platform. Not even close. He is failing the people of this country miserably.

Better than Bush simply doesn't cut it. And honestly, I'm not even so sure that he is better than Bush, especially if you consider the fact that he's supposed to be a Democrat while pondering that thought. I am one of so many who can't even listen to his speeches any more and I was very enthusiastic when he got elected.

219. If you see progress then you certainly aren't a liberal.
:eyes:

You'd have to be a conseraDem to think the results of this administration look promising.

On the war: More war, no end in sight. But only in oil-rich countries, of course, so we can make sure that the big corporations make huge amounts of money and have lots of reasons to support him in his re-election campaign. But, It's not US policy to object to dictators in countries that don't have oil, of course.

On the environment: Actively demanding support for Republican bills to end EPA powers (link provided above), still supporting voluntary standards and cap and trade markets (wall street style) to sell carbon credits. just what we need, more economic bubbles.

On the economy: More free trade agreements, means more jobs lost. Still no jobs bills. Still no help for the millions hurt by this economy. Still helping mostly the wealthy.

On reform: Experts agree that reform was a sham. The reforms that were passed do nothing, were for political theater only. We still do not have anything like the return of Glass-Steagal. We still cannot regulate Derivatives. No plans or expectations to do either one. The FEC is still controlled by appointees from the people they are supposed to regulate, in a revolving door of high paying jobs, so they cannot and will not regulate the companies where they keep getting offered high salaries. Nothing is being proposed or done to end the conflicts of interest or create real policing of wall street.

On Civil Rights: It took 2 years for him to final support the end of DADT, and that was only because other people managed to do all the work to get it to his desk despite everything he and the Pentagon did to stall and evade for 2 years, including actively supporting DADT in court! He is supporting treatment that meets the definition of torture of a US citizen and whistle-blower in a brig here in the US, claiming that he has been told it's acceptable. His FBI has been rounding up peace activists and holding them in jail indefinitely with out charges unless they name other peace activists, and they've been searching and seizing all their possessions solely because they are peace activists.

On the rule of law: Still running military tribunals with rigged rules instead of real courts with real laws and legal procedures. Defending the patriot act that he campaigned Against. First President to have Assassination as approved Policy, even against US Citizens, and all he needs to do is claim that he suspects someone of being a terrorist. No trail or evidence is required. Expanding the government's ability to spy on US citizens, especially online.

On corporate power: Supports the expansion of corporate power in every single instance, instead of defending the rights of people. Is not supporting net neutrality. Is not investigating systemic mortgage fraud that caused the economic collapse. Is not holding insurance companies accountable for the high costs of health care and instead wants to maximize their profits and guarantee their business.

Where do you see any liberal victories in any of this?

He is actively promoting Republican bills and goals almost constantly!

I take it as a wonderful opportunity to communicate directly with those who are close to the people closest to the people collecting the money for billionaires, er, the Democratic Party. I feel free to communicate to them my take on things like fighting three wars at a time while the country is going bankrupt and the new-found jihad against MM growers while virtually ignoring methamphetamine manufacturing. And you know what? They are even kind enough to provide me with a postage-paid envelope in which to communicate. What a country!

123. Just got a push-poll "survey" cum donation request from DNC
Yes! I am among a select group of Democrats (i.e, I was sucker enough to donate to Obama in his primary and presidential campaigns) from around the nation ! ! ! who are receiving this OFFICIAL 2011 PRESIDENTIAL SURVEY ! ! !

"President Obama is reaching out to regional Democratic leaders like you (me) to survey our thoughts about our path moving forward! ! ! ! "

That's why the DNC hopes that when I return my survey I will also enclose a GENEROUS contribution to the DNC to begin preparations for the 2012 presidential election ! ! !

Well, you can imagine how humbled and honored I was to receive this request for my thoughts and MONEY! Yes, my hands were shaking as I reached for my checkbook! NOT!

Funny, the letter didn't mention Obama's stated goal of raising one billion dollars for the next campaign. Guess I'll be receiving invites to the $25,000 a plate fundraisers where I can rub elbows with all those corporate bigwigs and lobbyists! All I'd have to do is take out a second mortgage on my house.

And as to my opinions on the "path moving forward", I have already made those opinions abundantly clear with phone calls to my Democratic Senator (Casey, whom I still support) and Blue Dog Congressman (Altmire, who has proved a massive disappointment to most Democrats in his District - but the GOP really likes him!) and to the White House operators - as well as signing a couple of hundred petitions on different issues. Unfortunately, the only one who votes the way I want them to, at least most of the time, is Senator Bob Casey.

223. I've been sending back replies telling them exactly why
I'm not giving any money to them.

I only give money, when I can afford it, to specific candidates who I feel will be progressive and populist. So far I've been right, thought they haven't always won their races. At least I have supported people with values I agree with.

I won't give to a party slush fund as long as that money will go to conservaDems and "moderates" who constantly sell out the people they should be helping and representing.

In every reply to every request for money I ask:

Where are the jobs creation bills?

Where are the effective regulations of derivatives?

Where are the bills ending the conflicts of interest in the FTC so that they can finally effectively regulate Wall Street?

Where are your hearings about the criminal wrongdoing behind the financial collapse? Where are the arrests?

When will the banks that are "too big to fail" finally be broken up because they are "too big to exist?"

When will be end these unnecessary wars that we all know were started with nothing but lies, that we all know we never should have been fighting at all?

The party won't get any more of my money until I see positive answers, and positive results to these questions.

28. Our politics are one massive failure.
Time to recognize it and go back to the drawing board with a new plan. Both parties suck big time and our legislative processes are crazy. The United States senate functions much like the old Polish sejm, where any member could just say "I object" and all the acts passed for the whole session were nullified. Democrats use it for cover to weasel away from upsetting the corporate power and Republicans just play it from the other side. Between them the balance insures the money power always has the upper hand.

84. If I recall correctly there were two serious candidates in an election in 2008
Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 08:21 AM by Rowdyboy
That is a fact. The better of the two in my opinion was Barack Obama therefore I voted for him. Those are statements of fact. In a strong 2 party system there are no serious alternatives, therefore no "3rd choice" was available which is necessary for a "false dichotomy"..

The fact that you don't like the definition, don't like my opinion and don't like Barack Obama all combined still do not make my post a "false dichotomy". Raising strawmen does nothing to enhance your position-at least not to someone who recognizes them.

But thank you for playing too!

234. We're far closer together than you think....I been disappointed by Democratic
presidents since Jimmy Carter. The choices we were offered in the Democratic primaries of 2008 were pathetic-but they were what they were. Gore didn't run, Feingold didn't run. We got Obama, a moderate, consensus seeking guy more interested in securing his place in history than fighting the system as a progressive change agent. He wasn't my first, second or third choice but rarely do my picks win party nominations.

He got dealt a bad hand-a hideous economy falling off the edge of the earth and he spent his first year preventing a new Depression. Then he thoroughly bungled health care with his idiotic hands-off approach providing no leadership. Democrats in congress are utterly incapable of governance without a strong hand behind them. Obama refused to be that strong hand and we're paying the price now.

While I am furious with him, I really don't see the point in kicking the man. There is no viable alternative on the horizon. If we spend this year tearing him down how do you make people want to get out and vote for him next year? Why should you care? The supreme court comes to mind.

So don't get the wrong impression about me either. I'm very disappointed in him, just like I was with Clinton and Carter but the Republican alternative is utterly unacceptable and there is no Democratic alternative. Go progressives :sarcasm:

Finally, I spend all day here in Podunk Mississippi gritting my teeth while listening to the yokels bitch about our "commonist" president. Then when I go to DU for some liberal comradeship all I find is crap like this supposedly clever thread (God knows I read it three times and I really don't get the humor-I rreally must be getting old).

Anyway, if I was rude I'm sorry. We really are, sadly, closer philosophically than you think

243. It was just the 1000th time I had heard that old canard
You got the full brunt of my frustration. In a way, I think it might just be better to let the bat shit crazy and stupid back in and maybe progressives can figure out once and for all how to force change. Obama seems to have neutered us with the idea that it could be so much worse, but look what has happened in Wisconsin when batshit crazy got elected by the stupid masses - Democracy broke out. I don't have a short memory -I remember Bush the lesser, but I also remember that we broke our backs trying to get rid of him and would have in 2004 if not for Diebold and the shenanigans in Ohio, but we kept at it into 2006 and 2008. We were angry and determined and now we're neutered and confused.

Maybe the enemy I can see in startling clarity is preferable to corporatist mediocrity and fear of "it could be worse"?

89. 2010 was not a Presidential election & I'd bet the things learned at lower levels of organization
apply differently at the highest level.

You and I may agree on the issues, but I suspect we disagree on how to approach solutions. IMO, taking a President out, in a fundamentally flawed system, does more harm than good. Presidents can't fundamentally change how our campaigns & elections work; that has to come from the bottom up and when that happens we will then stand a chance of getting the kind of President who CAN do what we need done.

Similar to Republicans, there are a lot of other people around who want "daddy" to quick, presto-chango make it all better, because that would be easier for us and would not require so much work and longstanding commitment to change on our part. Problem is Presidents CAN'T do that and even if one did go through the motions of appearing to do so, whatever s/he put in place would not work and would, ultimately, just add to our problems.

Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 04:46 PM by cliffordu
If you were deeply involved in the GLBT community politically you might know that medal usually has little direct link to the GLBT community, except for the GLBT soldiers who have served in VietNam, got wounded there or gave their lives there.

Except for the fact that Obama helped repeal DADT, and now training is actually in place to show line troops how to deal with a community that can, for the first time in the history of this country, serve openly.

Your script concerning the Prez, of course, doesn't allow for that.

Mass fail.

That's a paraphrase of someone. I'll be damned if I can remember who.

61. Actually, he is a genius, that's never been in question for me
and now that I understand the difference between a Corporatist and a Democrat, I no longer wonder what he will do next. I don't like much of what he does, but it no longer surprises me. Which is good, because I spent the first two years of his administration going through the stages of grief and getting stuck in rage. Now, I don't much care. Obama will do what Obama will do. He'll not get the work or the money he got out of me last time and it's no one's business who I'll be voting for and if Obama gets another four years, we'll get Corporatism run amok and if he loses we get Corporatism run amok with a bat shit crazy cherry on top. In one scenario, we'll keep pretending "our" side won and in the other we'll once again unite against the "other" side.

A few more may figure out that no matter who is at the top in DC, We The People will remain on the bottom unless we unite against the Corporaticans and get rid of all of them.

I do not trust nor hope nor believe in DC politicians anymore. The jury is still out on We The People.

132. your sarcasm makes some assumptions, i'd say are naive
1) you assume that there is an alternative to raising a billion to run for president

2) you assume that a well meaning US pres, a black one, (regardless of whether obama is well meaning) can actually
march into the white billionaire's house and do whatever he/she wants despite the best efforts of well entrenched cons in the system (mil, JD, etc. -many may still be serving the bush crime family).

3) that politicians do what they promise (but i've seen a list of things obama has delivered on that seems fairly long under the usual circumstances).

4) that any politician can speak the truth, and say what they want, in a country dominated by a well coordinated right wing media machine led by a 1000 radio station megaphone that can distort and message over everything the left tries to say.

5) that a dem pres gets the same media treatment as a con. anyone who's been paying attention the last 20 years or more would see that dem presidents don't get the same treatment.

141. here's the other thing- left isn't getting obama's back and can't say they ever did
and is silly to expect obama to stick his neck out as long they ignore the right's most important weapon- the talk radio monopoly- that gets a free speech free ride on 1000 unchallenged and unshamed radio stations that get to take free pot shots at all dem politicians.

- especially the progressives and those who stick their necks out.

individuals can say they are but collectively the left and it's progressive orgs can't until there is an organized left effort to fix the radio.

since legislation to do that will not happen as long as the radio is as is, it is absolutely necessary, especially with citizen's united, for an organized effort to

1) to shame and boycott local sponsors of those stations,

2) pressure US universities that broadcast sports on and give community credibility to those stations to pull out and find non-political alts.,

3) provide a searchable database of the main national and local and RW talkers so local and national progressives don't always end up reacting AFTER the RW messaging has already been pounded into the earholes of 50 mil a week, and the people they preach to.

Right. Tell that to my good friend Charles - 18 year Army veteran - now has a drool glass handy at all times since he LOST CONTROL OF THE MUSCLES IN HIS FACE after an IED in Iraq gave him traumatic brain injury.

CHARLES STUCK HIS NECK OUT FOR YOU AND OBAMA.

And he is one of TENS OF THOUSANDS of my fellow soldiers and YOUR FELLOW AMERICANS who have stuck their neck out LIGHT YEARS FUCKING FARTHER than our own PRESIDENT has.

You are right - Obama wouldn't have to spend a billion dollars if he had ever had the fucking COURAGE to do the FUCKING JOB WE HIRED HIM TO DO.

"Not stick his neck out."

IT. IS. HIS. FUCKING. JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

240. that was bush, while americans ignored 1000 radio stations selling that war
for political reasons.

the problem is the obstruction, the republicans and their corporate money and the media that allows them to obstruct and determine reality and move the perception of the center and ensure we get no real reforms.

until that is fixed the "wounded vets, and homeless, and hungry, and abused PEOPLE, who DON'T have six figure salaries and the best medical care in the world." don't have a chance.

obama's efforts to help those people are plain, but his success depends on OUR not sitting on our asses and expecting super progressive candidates to somehow beat all odds with corporate money and media against them and somehow ram a progressive agenda through, when all the obstructionists need are a disproportionate number of senators from empty rural states dominated by right wing talk radio.

the programs that would benefit those people, that would benefit america? why did they fail? yeah politics, but no progressive president can do anything major as long as the right can completely dominate the messaging. until that problem is fixed evaluation of this president and the dems is done with major factors missing.

241. for me the question is whether
dems or the GOP are going to help your friend more and that should be a clear choice.

do you think obama doesn't care on the large scale? you think after decades of low wage work relative to what he could have gotten as a lawyer, that he's in it for the fame and fortune?

then it comes down to how to reduce the ability of the GOP to obstruct sane humanitarian policies.

I've often found the use of the word "naive" to describe a person's argument is indicative, about 85% of the time, of an individual who has not sacrificed a thing as it applies to that which they describe as naive.

Food for thought, methinks.

235. i think many who are disappointed in obama are new voters, whether
they are young or whether they have been avoiding politics because of apathy or inability to take responsibility for a voting choice and those possible consequences, or just laziness, or on rare occasion, principles that don't allow compromise.

there are a lot of americans who have been to a lot of protests that were hardly noticed, done a lot of volunteer work, saw the reagan/ bush death squad and torture activity in central america while the media looked away, and know that as money and dirty tricks play a bigger and bigger part in politics, getting a thoughtful aware and even wise president in the white house is getting more and more difficult and to give up after 2 years, while, as i describe above, completely ignoring the right's most effective weapon, is ridiculous.

254. Long before Rush Limbaugh had a national audience, the Dems
were caving in whenever Reagan wanted anything. And that was when they had a majority in Congress for the first couple of years.

They can also be faulted for not countering the right-wing noise machine for 30 years. That noise machine didn't just appear out of nowhere all of a sudden, you know.

by giving a political minority representing billionaires the biggest unchallenged soapbox in history and considering its effectiveness in getting us into this multipronged disaster and delaying action on global warming.

dems were really doomed when reagan killed the the Fairness Doctrine and then the talk radio monopoly started. dems mistake has been ignoring the right's best weapon and strategizing in a talk radio vacuum, not their will to fix things.

I needed hipwaders to get through that..

EDIT to add:... As a lifelong Democrat, who has been in the trenches trying to get out the vote on local as well as national issues.. what a pant load that is. We are pulling pennies out of our pockets when we don't have it. We try and support our fellow Democrats in others states, and we do NOT have a Koch Brothers, or Corporate Lobby to pull up with buses to take us there and put us up. What a total insult this is, and the recs that this is getting just floors me

227. I truly, honestly do not understand peoples' expectations.
Obama hasn't done everything correctly. Far from it. However, I do believe he's done a great deal of good, the sum of which you can probably find listed somewhere in this thread's replies (there's a big list compiled).

The fact is, ours is a government with three branches, with checks and balances. Obama can't just make things happen. If the Congress isn't with him, if the current law isn't, he can't do it. Folks seem to expect that he's going to rule by edict, a la Bush II, and return us to that near dictatorial state. Doesn't appear to be Obama's preference.

As well, Congress shares the blame. It's very easy and tempting to want one person to target, but Obama's efforts are not without political challengers. He can't make things reality if the votes aren't present, and boy, the Republicans enjoy withholding their votes.

There's no way Obama can make everyone happy. Just won't happen. There are some (I hate that phrase, but ...) out there, even within the base and here at DU, who all but make him out to be Satan because he hasn't fully addressed their personal issue.

Truthfully, although I don't understand peoples' conduct, I'm not surprised to see it. The signs were there the night we took back the Presidency. Bush II was gone, and he was that unifying force which we could all agree on, even with our differences. Now that we have a Democrat in power, the sad pursuit of many seems to be eating our own.
