Abandoned Dog Inspires "Patrick's Law" Proposal (New Jersey woman has been charged in the case)

A Burbank woman is moved to action by a dog on the other side of the country
Tuesday, Mar 29, 2011 | Updated 6:18 AM PDT

Patrick is starting to act like a dog.

That's the best news we've heard about this pup since he lifted his head and starting eating just about a week ago. Sanitation workers found this emaciated, dehydrated pit bull mix wrapped in plastic trash bag in a New Jersey trash bin the day before St. Patrick's Day. Someone had tossed him down the trash chute in a 22-story building in New Jersey.

“Someone had no more use for this dog," the American Humane Society reports on its website. "They had starved it to near death, put it in a garbage bag and threw it down the garbage chute.”

The dog weighed about 20 pounds, less than half of what he should have, and was not expected to survive. Veterinarians at Garden State Veterinary Specialists gave him a blood transfusion, some fluids, warming blankets and a lot of TLC. And they waited.

On St. Patrick's Day, he surprised them all by just hanging in there, and that's how he got his name.

Kisha Curtis, a 28-year old New Jersey woman has been charged in the case, and could be sentenced to a maximum six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if she's convicted on all counts.

FULL story, photos, and video at link.

1. That dogs eyes are so haunted. I'm sure he has nightmares still, maybe forever.
This story breaks my heart. I am so glad he's getting better.

:) I found it while I was trying to figure out where to send money for him.

Who could put a puppy in the trash?! I am going to go hug Scout right now; she was found running down the highway almost 7 years ago. We don't think she remembers anything now though, particularly when she is demanding breakfast in bed. :) yeah, you read that right....we are pathetic.....

11. I had one dumped in my yard
and it was one of my own pups, bone thin, and with a wound on her nose (which, to be fair, may have been caused by my own three dogs who had cornered the orphan before I came outside to see what all the fuss was about). Kinda odd that neither mom or dad recognized their daughter, and neither did the sisters recognize each other. Annie, as I christened the little orphan, did not recognize her human grandfather either, but she quickly warmed up to me when I fed her, and quickly became best buds with her big sister before I placed an ad and gave her away again.

3. Reminded me of Biafra. Some people can't percieve a living soul when it's in front of them.
Many people have nightmares from trauma, and not only that, react when awake to things that should be bad dreams only.

Those are transformed and pushed back into the darkness by overwhelming love and approval.

That dog will be okay, with the right kind of people in his life.

This law the woman is asking for boils down to one thing: Be aware, be conscious and mindful. What the world needs more of.

We rescued him last June.

Here he is destroying a dog toy with the proof on his face: http://www.flickr.com/photos/22395170@N05/4795136916/in/photostream/lightbox/

9. Good
her face and name should be plastered across headlines for months.

Also she should be put on a no-buy list for any pets in the future.

12. Can you
legally shoot your dog? Or you have to take it to the vet and pay whatever the fee is there?

14. I'm pretty sure you can still legally shoot your dog in the head.
I could be wrong.

But, a gun shot to the head would have been kinder. Imagine how long that poor dog was suffering!
