Truth Out was hacked "and our content deleted"
From Truht Oout, in my email box today:

Dear Readers,

Late last night, Truthout.org was attacked and our content over the past ten days was deleted. We're working to capture the cache versions of those stories that are no longer available and republish them on our website.

You may find that some links will take you to "Page Not Found." Right now we're working to restore the vandalized stories.

We will update you as soon as we have more information, and hope to be back in full force very soon.

Thank you for your patience and your support!

Sincerely,

The Truthout Team

1. I wonder if it was a conservative "Anonymous"-type group?
Apparently this type of thing is only funny when it happens to people with whom we disagree.

5. Making information public is..
not the same as trying to destroy information.

No lulz in hiding the truth, only dark motives.

6. There is some sort of moral equivalency to responding to
censorship aggressively as Anonymous did when a news organization was shut down by the U.S. Government and hacking into a news site because you don't like their political views?

10. Anonymous did more than hack a single website
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_%28group%29#2011

In January 2009 members of Anonymous targeted California teen McKay Hatch who runs the No Cussing Club, a website against profanity. As Hatch's home address, phone number, and other personal information were leaked on-line, his family has received a lot of hate mail, lots of obscene phone calls, and even bogus pizza and pornography deliveries

On May 20, 2009, members of Anonymous uploaded numerous pornographic videos onto YouTube. Many of these videos were disguised as children's videos or family friendly videos with tags such as "Jonas brothers."

In December 2010, the document archive website WikiLeaks (used by whistleblowers) came under intense pressure to stop publishing secret United States diplomatic cables. In response, Anonymous announced its support for WikiLeaks, and Operation Payback changed its focus to support WikiLeaks and launched DDoS attacks against Amazon, PayPal, MasterCard, Visa and the Swiss bank PostFinance, in retaliation for perceived anti-WikiLeaks behavior.

The website for the Irish political party Fine Gael, a centre right party and currently the Republic of Ireland's largest opposition party, was hacked by Anonymous according to TheJournal.ie.

...members of the group Anonymous hacked the website of HBGary Federal and replaced the welcome page with a message stating that Anonymous should not be messed with, and that the hacking of the website was necessary to defend itself. Using a variety of techniques, including social engineering and SQL injection, Anonymous also went on to take control of the company's e-mail, dumping 68,000 e-mails from the system, erasing files, and taking down their phone system.

Without getting into the rationale behind each of these actions, when one advocates or cheers for vigilante activity on the internet against groups with which they disagree their protestations ring hollow when groups they favor fall victim to the same vigilante-style tactics.

12. I don't think that cheering for Anonymous' hacking of
HBGary means we don't expect people on the other side will not do the same thing to those we agree with.

It's inevitable that they will. But we can still hold opinions on which attacks were more justified.

It's the cyber age. Everyone's going to be doing it. I'm just glad that for once, someone is helping OUR side for a change.

We are far outclassed by the far right on media propaganda something they have been working on for decades. We probably could start 'journalism' schools, as they have, teaching people to play dirty tricks on the opposition, with no regard for the truth. But we haven't and I would not want that. I would like the MSM to report honestly on people like James O'Keefe eg, rather than presenting him as a legitimate 'journalist'. But that is unlikely, so they even have help from the media to promote their deceptive, dirty tricks.

Therefore, I do and will cheer for Anonymous when they take down some of these underhanded, smear machines like HBGary whose 'work' was to deceive the public regarding Wikileaks and people like Glenn Greenwald. They started a media war and we had no one on our side other than ordinary people, to fight it. Anonymous stepped in and for once, we had a victory.

But as I said, that doesn't mean we should expect it won't be done by the other side.

15. Haha. The no cussing club.
Edited on Thu Mar-31-11 11:21 PM by JoeyT
You mean the group that was being sold by right wingers as a child standing up for morality that turned out to be a bunch of nutjob conservatives trying to hawk their stupid books and stupid morals by creating a fake movement through their kid? That no cussing club? What destroyed the NCC was Anonymous posting the parents emails showing that it was basically them writing the entire thing and foisting it on their kid in an effort to sell books.

The Youtube thing was /b/ and Ebaums, not anonymous.

No, of course you don't want to get into the rationale, because it completely defeats your point. Without the rationale self defense can become first degree murder. Good luck with that.

ETA: Anonymous isn't a group with defined members. Anyone can do absolutely anything and claim to be a member of Anonymous and there's no way to prove they aren't. Still, a lot of crap gets blamed on them that isn't them and no one that was involved claims to be one. Bad shit on the internet? Must be Anonymous!!!1111

Reedited to add: And no this wasn't Anonymous. No goatse, no logo, no mask. Just deleting stuff isn't their MO and it isn't funny enough.

13. "Anonymous" has political leanings?
It is a mob out for nothing more than getting its kicks. So many DUers have been duped into lionizing it that, should this turn out to be the work of anonymous, would make it funny.
