72 percent of Vt. schools do not meet targets (or how fucked up is NLB)

LISA RATHKE, Associated Press

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Seventy-two percent of Vermont schools did not meet increased standards under the No Child Left Behind Act, according to results released Thursday by the state Department of Education.

That's up from 31 percent of schools last year that failed to make the mark.

The jump was caused by an increase in the targets, which go up every three years with the goal of 100 percent of students being proficient in math, reading and science by 2014, a goal seen by school officials as unrealistic.

"Vermont did not choose to lower our standards in the face of these federal accountability requirements, therefore we continue to see more schools identified," said Commissioner Armando Vilaseca.

An estimated 82 percent of schools nationally are not expected to meet the goals, he said.

Vermont consistently gets high ratings on education and yet under NLB the vast majority of its schools are "failing".

2. Obama's education policy is a huge disappointment. NCLB should not be reauthorized.
Obama and Arne Duncan have the idea that NCLB can be "fixed." The legislation is fundamentally flawed. If they really want to do right by students and educators, they will scrap NCLB. They should come up with a realistic ESEA bill that includes accountability standards but doesn't penalize schools for being more diverse or having special education or English language learner students.

4. That's significantly better than the national average.
Good job, Vermont!

The standards were designed to insure the eventual failure of every school in this country. They will achieve their ends unless we get rid of NCLB.

6. Yep. I recall quite clearly
when NCLB was passed, it was pointed out that it was GUARANTEED to make every single school in the country a failing school by about 2015, maybe earlier.

In that respect, NCLB has succeeded.

5. NCLB was designed so that every school will fail in 10 years
it's requirements are designed to fail every school within 10 years no matter how well they do. Just the attendance clause alone is impossible (a school must increase their attendance rate by 2% each year with no cap). So if a school has a 90% attendance rate, in 5 years it will fail. Once a school hits 100% attendance, they fail - if they don't increase their attendance rate by 2 % a year, they fail.
