Radioactive iodine traces detected in New York
Radioactive iodine traces detected in New York

NEW YORK (Kyodo) Trace amounts of radioactive iodine believed to have come from the quake- and tsunami-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant have been detected in the air and rainwater in New York, the state's health department said.

There is no threat to public health, the department said in a statement published Tuesday. "The most recent analyses show that levels range from 0.01-0.1 picocuries (one-trillionth of a curie) per cu. meter in air. These levels are similar or below what other states are reporting," it said.

In the United States, trace amounts of radioactive materials believed to have come from the Fukushima nuclear plant have also been detected in Hawaii, California, Nevada, Florida and Massachusetts.

The amount detected in New York is "dramatically below levels that would cause human health concerns," State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah said in the statement, adding that exposure to this level of radiation is thousands of times lower than common medical imaging procedures, such as chest X-rays.

4. Rec'd because it's news.
I live in New York City, and I hadn't seen this before. It's not FUD, it's information.

26. No radiation here people, nothing to see, break it up, move along. LOL, Rec,d
Yea, why would anyone care about being irradiated. I mean it's just the possibility of being poisoned for life, getting cancer, having deformed children, screwed up food supplies, etc..., why would anyone care?

10. That was my thought when that rain hit us the day before.
I consoled myself that that storm had already dumped on East. Texas, La, and Miss before it got to us.

I wasn't worrying about getting contaminated.

5. The isotope
I-131 half-life is about 8 days. None of this is around from our own period of nuking our country to see what would happen.

This isotope is tested for all the time - that's why it is being found and reported everywhere. Radioactive iodine isotopes are used in medicine, and improper disposal of medical equipment could cause local contamination. Normally these detections would cause a check to see where it is coming from, but since it's being detected all over the country in very similar, albeit small, quantities, they figure this is Japan.

Hospitals test effluent, water purification plants test, milk producers test, nuclear plants of course test.

11. Flaming Dem you made me smile -- a DUZY
I hope all these trace amounts don't add up to anything serious for us. Try to stay positive.

Just need to focus on turning the stuff off at the source at this point.

.. I'm happy you enjoyed my inspired moment and yes we need to think about the Japanese even though we have our own worries - tiny by comparison. I am feeling so bad for them.

23. We had snow tonight that looked like spray insulation. Heavy and clung in an odd way. Did not track
either. When I let the dogs out to pee, they smelled the ground and came right back in. Refused to stay out and pee. One of them was walking gingerly on it like it was trying not to step in it.
Dogs have really good noses.

24. I had a carpet outside to air out overnight
and it snowed a little bit. When the snow dried out the next morning (I'm in Colorado, land of low humidity), there was a white powder on the carpet. :( My dog won't go in the local stream, either, whereas I normally can't keep him out.

NOT. Silly people, worried about a little thing like radiation poisoning. What's wrong with them, don't they see how funny it is?
