These were firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel who were given assurances that their air quality was JUST FINE!
Many who believed are DEAD NOW.
Will you believe?

9. Uranium is all over the United States |
|
Pitchblende is found naturally in many soils. Coal contains natural concentrations of uranium, which during the incineration process becomes Uranium Oxide, which is the most common form of insoluble molecule (soluble Uranium, simply passes through the body). The most common form of exposure to uranium in the U.S. is therefore being downwind of a coal-burning electrical plant.
Depleted Uranium, or Uranium 238, has a half-life of 4.47 billion years, meaning that it is considerably less radioactive than bananas. The danger of uranium is that it is a heavy metal, and all heavy metals are to some degree poisonous. But in metallic form, as munitions are, it really isn't even in a chemical formulation to enter the bloodstream, even if you sucked on it.
Lead is a far more common heavy metal, and it is scattered around lots of wildlife areas because of hunters using lead shutgun pellets, which then are eaten by the waterfowl which can build up to toxic levels. (There have been moves to make pellets out of iron, or coat them with iron, to help reduce this problem.)
Regardless, anyone who wastes time screaming about Depleted Uranium munitions is someone who has a level of understanding of science about on par with a anti-evolution nutcase. In both cases, facts don't matter. Not when someone really wants to believe what they want to believe.

11. Depleted uranium is primarily dangerous because it is a heavy metal |
|
The radiation emitted by DU is quite low; the fact that it has a 4 BILLION year half-life indicates just how little radiation it emits (longer half-life means less radioactivity, which is why things with short half-lives like cesium-131 are so dangerous).
What can make it so toxic is that it can act on a human in the same way lead or mercury can, as a heavy metal poison if it finds it's way into your body.

13. With all due respect... |
|
This is not so much it's radioactivity or how it's adverse affects pose health-related problems so much as it is trusting the 'official' report that it's health effects are or were negligible...
The cynicism towards the 'officials' has been badly damaged.
