Ohanami (cherry blossom viewing parties) are cancelled this year. |
|
Heard on NHK news yesterday that the national government is strongly urging against the traditional practice of gathering in the nation's parks for ohanami this year due to concerns over the Fukushima. Here is one mention about the follow-up by Tokyo City govt. http://www.demotiximages.com/news/645186/cherry-blossom-events-cancelled-tokyo

1. Where did it say they're canceled due to concerns over Fukushima? |

The government is asking people to exercise "self-restraint" in ohanami parties, not because of fear of nuclear fallout, but out of consideration for the disaster victims. Many think it would be inappropriate to have the usual drunken celebrations in the park in light of what just happened, and is still happening. I suspect many people are not in the mood for it anyway. Kind of like the mood was in America after 9/11.
