WORLD surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore has been bashed with an iron bar during a terrifying home invasion.

Gilmore, 22, suffered a fractured wrist and cuts to her head and hand as she fought off the pushbike-riding attacker about 9.30pm last night.

She was treated at Tweed Heads Hospital and was today 'traumatised' over the attack, a surfing industry insider said.

Gilmore's friends and neighbours made a dramatic citizens' arrest of the accused attacker after he allegedly returned to the scene.

A police spokeswoman would not confirm Gilmore as the victim but said the woman suffered defensive wounds as she fought off the man who attacked her with the pole on the steps leading up to her Hill Street unit on the Queensland-NSW border.
