Northern Ireland Cop Just 3 Weeks on the Job, Aged 25, Killed by Booby-Trap Car Bomb...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/apr/02/omagh-booby-trap-bomb-policeman-killed

Gah, are we going to start this shit again??:banghead: Just 3 weeks into his new job and the young constable is murdered getting into his car outside his home. The incident occurred in the constable's hometown of Omagh...

This is in the same location of an infamous car bombing over 12 years ago...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omagh_bombing

Resulting in the deaths of 29 Men, Women, and Children.

I guess he deserved to die. He was Catholic and had no business serving in the Northern Ireland Police Service! :sarcasm::sarcasm:

Bomber scum.

Fortunately there is solace to be found in the fact that both Republican and Unionist leaderships have publicly and vehemently denounced the act and its attempt to derail over a decade of peace and coexistence.

1. there is still a great deal of Catholic hatred in northern Ireland
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 04:14 PM by CountAllVotes
Don't be fooled, it is very real. Sad but true. :(

Did this young man deserve to die because he is a Catholic? I don't think so myself but there are others so filled with hatred towards Catholics that they will do anything and that includes killing someone.

2. Right. Alas, it is still true in many cases.
What is the default state of human? To hate and despise anyone we deem different from our own personal and social norms? Or, is it to coexist and accept those around us and their differences and that underneath the skin of differing dogmas and beliefs we're all just...human?

I prefer and will always prefer, perhaps stubbornly, the latter. We're all just a bag of skin and bones and blood...everyone of us. We just come in different packaging. (Something i think makes us all unique). Sadly, its only after something like a bombing that we realize...albeit in a macabre way...that we are all just skin and bones and...blood. :-(

7. I got the impression from the story
that he was killed by other Catholics for being a scab and joining the police force.

10. I don't think this particular officer was targeted...
More likely than not the Continuity IRA, who still haven't accepted the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, are behind this act. Since the PSNI is an element of the Northern Irish state, a state that the CIRA refuses to acknowledge, it is no surprise that they were attacked by dissident terrorists.

But then again I could be wrong....

11. That is possible...
Obviously the primary target of the attack was a PSNI officer for the reasons you mentioned. It could simply be an extra salt to the wounds coincidence that he happened to be Catholic. Then again...perhaps it was not a coincidence. Only time will tell us.

8. As someone who knows Northern Ireland...
This bombing is almost certainly the work of a Republican, most likely the Continutity IRA. The only organizations that bomb the police in NI are dissident Republicans. These are the same pricks that murdered two soldiers outside the Maserine Barracks whilst they were collecting pizza a couple years back. The Loyalist gangs on the other hand targeted random Catholics. There have been few if any sectarian killings in the past years and I think the Loyalists have given up as have most IRA men.

I don't think this sporadic violence will end any time soon. The good news is that these sorts of attacks are increasingly rare, certainly not with the same intensity as the early 1970s, hell it drastically better than it was ten years ago. I even remember hearing that Northern Ireland has one of the lowest crime rates of any part of the UK....I don't have a source on that but I reckon there's some truth there.

13. I have friends in northern Ireland
And yes, they have been randomly attacked physically on the street for being "Cats" as they are called. It sickens me.

This won't stop until Ireland is united once again.

In my wildest dreams ...

19. If it was that easy it would have happened ages ago
No-one in the rest of the UK gives a fuck whether NI is part of the UK or not. If re-uniting Ireland would stop the bombing, people would be happy to see it go.

The problem is that about half the population of NI want to remain part of the UK, and a small minority of them feel so strongly about this that they're prepared to resort to violence.

20. the people doing this are cowards
That is all they ever have been and ever will be. They have an agenda alright and that is one of hatred.

I'm sure many people in Ireland and the UK would like to see and end to this. Ireland is one of the most abused countries in the world historically. I'm sure sick of it and I'm sure they are too ever since England invaded Ireland c. 1100. :(

...That said, the story isn't this bomb. It's that the bomb squad is nearly as active now as it was 15, 25 years ago. These bombs didn't really stop. :(

14. Policeman killed in car explosion in Omagh
A PSNI officer has been killed, when a device exploded under a car in the Highfield Close area of Omagh, Co Tyrone.

Ronan Kerr, 25, was killed when a device exploded under his Ford Mondeo car outside his home just before 4pm today as he left for work.

The victim is understood to have recently graduated from the PSNI training college.

He was in the car alone when neighbours rushed to the scene seconds after the bomb exploded.

Another place it appears - in Ireland of all places!

RIP Officer Ronan KERR

5. Amazing, Now the Republican Terrorists are assasinating Catholics?
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 04:42 PM by JaneQPublic
Twenty years ago, no one would believe that would ever come to pass.

But it does appear the only good to come out of it is the unification all former enemies in a hatred against these terrorist bombers. Fekkin eejits!
