Unions & minorities in government jobs (Republican two-fer)
Edited on Sat Apr-02-11 08:39 PM by SoCalDem
Starting with desegregation, and extending well into the Women's Lib era, getting a job with the government (federal/state) was an option offered to millions of people who had previously been excluded from ever thinking about. Affirmative action was hated by republicans then...and it's only gotten Hate-ier over the decades.

Ever since public service/government jobs were made more available to minorities, republicans have done all in their power to undermine the laws and to eliminate them. They have mostly failed, but now is their time to make a last stand, and it's no surprise to me that they are going all-in.

These jobs were like manna from heaven, because they were union jobs and they had laws behind them, to ensure that once-forgotten people finally had a chance at a decent living.

Take a look at the stats at the link, and you'll see what a lot of the republican angst is about. They know that these same millions of people who started their careers during the 70's & 80's are now at the end of their careers (and wanting their benefits they paid for all those years), or the younger ones are nearing their height of influence & power..

Traditionally, white males have held most of the higher-level positions in the federal government. Along with cabinet members, who are selected by the president, these high-level officials wield the power in federal government. This holds true for many agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Naturalization Service, and Customs Service.

A major contributor to this situation is time. It takes about twenty years to rise to the top of any organization. In the early 1980s few women, African-Americans, or Hispanics held any management positions in the federal government. Another possible factor is partiality. Some lower-level government employees believe that they have been deprived of promotions because of their gender or race and have filed bias complaints.
