Australian floods - Queensland
Utter devastation
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12084735
<snip>
Flooding in north-eastern Australia has forced residents to evacuate towns and closed down more than 300 roads.

In one town, Theodore, 300 residents are being flown out by a fleet of helicopters after floodwaters swamped buildings.

The floods have caused hundreds of millions of dollars worth of damage to sunflower and cotton crops.

The state capital, Brisbane, has recorded its wettest December in more than 150 years. Cyclone Tasha, which hit Queensland on Saturday, also brought torrential rain to the state.

1. Isn't Queensland the tropical part of Australia?
Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 05:43 AM by SoCalDem
If so, perhaps it's the conversion of tropical rainforested land that is the real problem. Intact rainforests love and know how to handle deluges.. It's only when humans come along and change the topography and start chopping things down to build roads, that problems start to occur..

Anyone who had ever actually walked inside a rainforest knows the sound that your footsteps make as you walk on the slightly spongy, detritus-strewn jungle floor.

some ominous stats for the future:

3. This isn't normal for Brisbane, if you head up to Cairns/Port Douglas area that's where the floods
should occur and do typically... Brisbane is typically a wonderfully dry place to Holiday in December..
