Conservative: Rebecca Black song "a welcome relief from the relentless sexualization of chidlhood"
(via ConWebWatch) Yep, someone is writing in defense of Rebecca Black's terrible song "Friday" (which got a makeover by Stephen Colbert on Friday's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon). That would be Erin Brown from the Culture and Media Institute (a division of Brent Bozell's Media Research Center):

While most of the attention has focused on her immature song and video, there is a lesson to be learned and a broader point to be made by her age-appropriate success.

With former role models like Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan turning from innocent Disney icons into raunchy adult stars, Rebecca Black has provided a welcome relief from the relentless sexualization of chidlhood.

"Friday" has been excoriated as "uniquely terrible," "hilariously dreadful," and called the "Worst Song Ever" But Black's "Friday" is exactly what parents are looking for to replace the filth in pop culture. Society has been spending too much time poking fun at her shallow song, and not enough time recognizing that almost 70 million hits means that a popular video flocked with an innocent message can still win out.

Because making a total fool out of yourself is age-appropriate isn't it? And c'mon, Miley Cyrus as a role model...I'm sure that the pop star life and mindless materialism are values that make good ol' kids. Even the Koch Brothers are better role models.

And at Conwebwatch, Terry Krepel highlights this particular passage:

...the video for Lady Gaga's chart-topping hit "Born This Way" on YouTube has only garnered a little over 28 million hits, compared to black's 69 million. The 'gay, straight or bi, lesbian, transgendered' anthem from the pop sensation accrued more than 440,000 downloads in its first week. This radio and digital sales record-breaking song has yet to receive even half of the internet hits already obtained by the previously unknown teen.

In other words: Rebecca Black is out there to save the kids from being recruited by the gays!!! And Krepel comments: "Because, you know, Internet hits is always an indicator of quality of a video's content."

By the way, Conwebwatch has many great criticisms and rebuttals of the Media Research Center, WorldNetDaily, and Newsmax, and the occasional "no comment needed" post or cheap jab.

And didn't Lady Gaga steal "Born This Way" from Madonna's "Express Yourself"?

There is plenty of family-friendly music out there that doesn't sink to Rebecca Black's level. Taylor Swift, for example. And to be honest, religious indoctrination and promotion of homophobia, slut-shaming, and intolerance are a greater harm to childhood.

1. I finally went and listened to the song, and I was wondering if the whole front seat/back seat bit
was a euphemism. But then I realized that the girl is ~13, so I assume probably not...

2. *snerg*
I'll bet half the hits came from people sharing the link with their buddies aying, "Check out this really shitty song."

11. That is my experience
I was blissfully ignorant until my daughter shot it to me on facebook suggesting that this was a traffic accident I had to see. 2 of the hits are mine, once at her suggestion and a second to show it to my wife.

Of course, for discussion purposes, I shot her back "Muskrat Love", which I think is competitive. My daughter agreed.

3. "Friday" is such a terrible song it has 81 million views.

Every once in a while a song comes along that nails a feeling a lot of people can relate to, and it doesn't matter a whit how well-crafted or sophisticated it is.

10. Actually, it's getting hits because it was mocked on two well-known blogs
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 04:54 AM by REP
People aren't watching it because it's great; they're watching for the same reason people watch The Room - because they're so bad they're unintentionally funny.

21. Nope. There are thousands of bad songs that appear on YouTube every week.
Edited on Mon Apr-04-11 09:51 AM by wtmusic
It's getting views (and sales on iTunes) because it taps into a theme that hits home with thirteen-year-olds.

The fact that it's being dissed by those who "know better" (snobs, essentially) only adds to its appeal.

What's The Room? Never heard of it, but whoever is responsible for it wishes they had the action Friday does.

29. You're being sarcastic, right?
If not, then you have a lot to learn about how Teh Intartubes work. I advise you to explore Fark.com, SomethingAwful, and 4-chan to learn how easy it is for truly AWFUL videos to get gazillions of hits of YouTube.

5. I went to Youtube and listened to that song...
Ms. Black's inane song--it's not "family friendly" or "innocent"; there's absolutely nothing there--gives one a newfound respect and admiration for the superior musical craftsmanship of Chuggo's "C'mon Fuck a Guy."

For now I'll just say, pick on someone your own age, will ya?

9. The song is nothing but a run-down of a day's events at it's most mundane.
So to not offend, let's sing about nothing at all for four minutes?

The only person that comes out a loser in this is Rebecca herself. At 13 and an aspiring singer, she's forever going to be associated with this AutoTuned monstrosity she didn't even write.

26. well I have to say that the Beatle's I Wanna Hold Your Haaaaaaaand
I wanna hold your haaaaaand haaand haaaand
I wanna hold your haaaaaand...

wasn't all that great either, looking back.
not comparing at all, but if one is going to criticize for really bad lyrics there are thousands, millions of songs out there by very popular musicians that are truly shitty.

I don't get this pile on this kid. Let her have her fun.
She'll be chewed up and spit out by the industry soon enough to make her critics happy.

Must be depressing to be forced to confront your lack of accomplishments.

Once she sees some money from this whole thing, she will have managers & overseers...and she will grow up ..

People will demand more form her, and she will probably comply..money does strange things to people..

18. Lots of teabagger dog whistling going on in there.
It's kind of like when people talk about "family" and "traditional values." They're not actually saying, "No homos allowed!" but in a way they are.

and repugs. the propaganda they spew. i think this kid could be talking the whole of what he sees in society today. i can hear the same things from my boys, and they are not teabaggers or rw.

19. What IS IT with conservatives?
They have absolutely no taste, no way to discern what's quality entertainment--all they think about is whether it has "nasty sex" (or what they perceive as sexual, which could be anything beyond a peck on the cheek) or "durrty langidge". If it has anything that makes them clutch their pearls, it's BAD. If it's horrid but "innocent", it's GOOD. Er, not necessarily, as poor Rebecca's tune so clearly shows.

27. I respect her
Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 04:54 PM by joeglow3
She is 13 and dreams of being a singer. When I was 13, I dreamed of playing Division 1 football. I tried, but could not even play varsity.

She took the effort to come up with a song and put it out there. I agree it is not the best (and she will probably meet the same fate I did with football), but she has gained notoriety, made decent money which she said she is donating to her school and Japan and, most importantly, carried herself with grace as all these pathetic fucking losers take out their aggressions at not accomplishing shit in their life on a 13 year old.

Frankly, if everyone carried themselves as she has thus far, this would be a MUCH better world. As for her critics (many here)....well, we can understand why we have a world full of assholes.
