At least one person has died as a result of a severe storm front still passing through the state this evening.

In Copiah County, a driver was killed after a falling tree struck his vehicle in the Hopewell community, the Copiah County Emergency Management Agency reported.

Meanwhile, around 18,500 Entergy Mississippi customers were without power as of around 6:30 p.m., said Mara Hartmann, company spokeswoman.

Customers in more than 30 counties are affected, including thousands in central Mississippi, where more than 5,600 outages are reported in Hinds County.

We are on the Western edge of Slidell, in the boondocks. Surprisingly, we did not lose power. I think the winds to the East of us were stronger, about 100 mph.
