Go online and try to buy a Geiger counter. You can't. |

All sold out and back ordered.

calibration. If all you're concerned about is detecting measurable levels on a comparative basis, it doesn't really matter. Check the background level when you get the instrument, then check for increases. Calibration isn't that important for simple detection purposes. The real question is what you'd do if you detect some level of radiation? Leave? To go where?

8. No, they're not all sold out. Prices have gone up, though, |

since the demand is high. The real question is: Why do you want one? What will you do if you detect radiation where you live? How much radiation do you expect? But, what will you do if you detect some? If it's where you are, it's almost certainly wherever you'd go. It won't take long until radiation from the Fukushima incident reaches every habitable place on the planet.

10. if it gets to the point where you need one, we're all screwed anyway |
|
do you have a radiation proof bunker to hide in? plastic sheeting and duct tape wont protect from that high of an amount of radiation.
If it gets to that point, take a nice long walk outside, smoke em if ya got em, hug the family and kiss your ass goodbye

http://www.ehow.com/how_5005665_build-geiger-counter.htmlThe Geiger-Muller tube is going to run you around $300, though. Still cheaper than buying a new one.

So you buy a geiger counter and now you know that radiation levels are up -- what ya gonna do, start digging? I have a rather fatalistic view, as it's far too late to avert disaster in this case ...
Whatever will be will be.
