The Jeanette Maples Project - please help
Edited on Tue Apr-05-11 04:08 PM by roxiejules
I hope fellow DU'ers will take a moment to help bring light to the memory of this little girl's life. Her death has profoundly impacted all who have read her story and many of us would like to see her name become synonymous with Child Abuse Prevention. No one was there to help her - we want to make sure that never happens again.

Please help the Facebook Memorial Page go viral - click on the link and "Like" the page. Or just K&R this so it will be seen.

Jeanette Marie Maples lived her final months in such obscurity that no one outside her family knew her mother was starving, beating and torturing her to death.

But Jeanette, who died Dec. 9, 2009, at age 15, now has a place in hundreds, perhaps thousands, of local hearts.

Her tragic life and death scarred everyone involved that night: The paramedics who responded to a 911 call and tried to revive the battered, emaciated teen. The emergency physician who pronounced her dead. The medical examiner who catalogued injuries so numerous he could not pinpoint a single cause of death. The detectives, prosecutors and child protection workers who also went to her family’s River Road home that night.

One described a sense of evil so palpable he wanted to run from the house. Some could not help crying despite years of training and experience with horrific child abuse cases.

Most called the case the worst of their careers. Jeanette’s case also traumatized the judge who presided over Angela McAnulty’s case.

21. Sorry I missed this story when you posted it
It's a very sad story and one I would have loved to have rec'd.
Unfortunately, yesterday (I think that's when you posted) was full of many posts about the Wisconsin elections.
I've seen many important stories, such as this one, get lost in the waterfall of posts about a single topic on this site.

You might want to consider reposting this story because it is that sad and important a story.

5. K&R - but your top link is dead
How horrifying. How did the "entire community" know this was happening, and yet NO ONE helped her? That poor sweet little girl. I won't post what I think should happen to the "parents" because it would get me banned from this site.

7. Is the Facebook link not working?
It works when I click on it....

you can go to Facebook and search for The Jeannette Maples Project.

Thank you for the K&R.

Jeannette was taken out of public school once the students and teachers became suspicious and she was 'home schooled' by her abuser. No one ever saw her again.

11. Sorry - the first news story link at the bottom

The facebook link is fine.

Ugh. This is so tragic. And the Repukes want to keep cutting funding for social services, meaning more and more of these tragedies will happen...

Still, how many people had to complain about her bruises before the state stepped in and took her away from those monsters?

12. The state thought her 'age' protected her
even though she had been taken away once before. So, because Jeannette was over 12 I guess she was suppose to fend for herself.

9. I found myself staring at the picture of that lovely young girl
I found so much alive in that young face.
I found myself with tears in my eyes, that has never happened to me on this site before.

10. I had the same reaction when I first read about her in 2009
this was found in her Journal:

Love is the thing you get
when it is true.

...Love is the thing that can be
as true as deep blue.

Love is the thing that
can make you mad.

Love is the thing that
when broken, can be sad.

13. Horrible, horrible case
Death penalty for the mother and a life sentence for the step-father. I hate the idea of capital punishment, but can't get worked up about this instance. Horrid enough for Jeanette, but at least she is free from it and all the repercussions--sadly, she had two younger siblings who will live with their entire lives colored by the events they witnessed.

20. Too late to rec this.
This is a tragic story. We need to fund and staff CPS so that there are resources to prevent living nightmares like this. In the meantime, this project is worthwhile.
