Eagles Plan To Make Lincoln Financial Field The World's Greenest Stadium

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/front_page/20101118_Eagles_aim_to_turn_Lincoln_Financial_Field_into_world_s_greenest_stadium.html?page=1&c=y

The Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field, built before the advent of seriously green construction, is soon to become the greenest stadium in the world, the club is to announce Thursday.

Come opening day next September, if all goes as planned, the upper rim of the stadium will be studded with 100 spiral-shape wind turbines.

Some 2,500 solar panels will cover portions of the roof and facade, tilting south.

In the parking lot - not where the fans park - the Eagles will build a cogeneration power plant that can run on biodiesel or natural gas.

Taken together, the Eagles say, the three sources will fully power any game, even as the stadium lights blaze, and the sound system blasts.

In effect, the team will be off the grid, although the system will remain tethered to feed unneeded juice back into the grid.

<<<<snip>>>>

The Eagles say the plan also is good business. The team expects to save $60 million in energy costs over the next two decades.

"We never really accepted the notion that to do great by the environment would not be a wise business practice, or too costly," owner Jeffrey Lurie said.

Watch sports videos you won't find anywhere else

Just think if all professional sports stadiums/arenas would do this. What a major positive impact this would have on the environment. Even Obama has called Lurie to congratulate him on making such a bold move with the stadium - I'm guessing Obama would like to see all professional & college stadiums to make similiar changes with their stadium.

2. There are major stadiums & arenas in every state. We have 2 major ones here in Delaware
It would be great to get Dover Downs and The Bob on alternative energy

It hurts my heart.

4. I can't keep up with what the Philly Basketball/Hockey center is called these days
It was name-changed again this past year. I can't keep up with what bank it's called each year but I do miss it being owned by First Union - Then it was the FU Center :D

11. I see nothing wrong with it
Naming rights to a stadium can earn up to 20 million a year. Thats a lot of money. Money that if it was not generated would have to be made up elsewhere. Since cities fund a lot of stadiums (I'm not saying I agree with this, I'm just saying its how it is), if they didn't get money from naming rights, they would have to pay more to build and maintain stadiums. Or maybe the fans would have to pay it, and tickets would go up 20.00 each, making it less affordable for families to attend games.

I'm know idiot, I know the team owner is getting some money from the naming rights, but he probably isn't getting all of it (and if he is, then whoever negotiated the contract needs to be fired.

5. Well I gave you a rec for all the good it did...
It would be great if all the stadiums/arena would do this. The amount of energy saved would be fantastic. You'll probably never hear me compliment the Eagles again, but on this I have to say good job. I now have to go into witness protection. :-)

10. You'll be happy to know that Eagles tickets are hard to get because of sold out games
and that Vick came in second place for NFL Pro Bowl fan favorite.

But I'm glad you're so worried about Michael Vick and the fact that he has a career because it really is the most important thing we DUers should be having hissy fits over. I mean there aren't any wars going on and we all have great jobs with healthcare and I highly doubt that one family was stuck out in the cold during that blizzard that hit the NE. I mean as long as dogs aren't being harmed who cares about anyone else.

The new UNT stadium is set to be at least among the greenest of all the unnecessary new stadiums.

15. University of New Texas?
Everyone seceded Texas, and renamed it New Texas, with a Democratic Governor and Democratic legislation. The old Texas is still somewhere, but it's reduced to just three people. DeLay, Armey and Perry.

Green my ass.

Wherein lots of people drive lots of miles to sit in a smog choked stadium watching massively overpowered stunt vehicles drive in small circles.

27. 33 year old publicly financed Veteran Stadium imploded
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:05 AM by Zanzobar
To make way for newer, greener, less wasteful venue.

Now that is green thinking! Waaaay better than Pontiac Silverdome. That publicly financed boondoggle only lasted 26 years.

The relative greenness is a feather in their cap!
