6. It's addicting, isn't it?

I've been watching two eagle's nests for five years now.
They are located on islands in British Columbia.
One nest , near Sidney, on Vancouver Island, has two cameras and sound. This nest also has three eggs, the first due to hatch on April 11th.
From my past viewing and observations, it is way better for the eagles to have just two eggs and chicks to raise.
The third eaglet, being younger and smaller is at a great disadvantage trying to compete with it's older siblings.
The older, stronger chicks will instinctively attempt to eliminate him/her.
It's really difficult, at times, to watch, believe me.

I saw the older chick the other day during feeding.. he was competing for the food, and pecked the little guy on the head.

The young one fell over on his face and didn't get back up. I thought of cain and abel; then I thought maybe he just fell over and fell asleep. They are such sleepy little things after they eat.

The smallest of the three eaglets hatched in the Sidney B.C. nest barely survived.
He was smart enough to hide between the legs of his parents where his older sisters dared not venture in their attempt to oust him.
He also benefited from a wealth of food (primarily salmon)in the area. As the older, bigger chicks got their food first and were satiated and drowsy, there still was ample food left for the parents to feed the little one.
When his bigger sisters were full and sleeping,(therefore not attacking him) he could eat.
Expect this scenario in this nest too.
The abundance of food is KEY for 3 eaglets to survive to fledge.

It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has a ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beadier.” Some think that the male’s head is “sleeker” than the female’s.

I keep getting the urge to sit on my cats, they are reminding me of eaglets lately.

And the way the parents are so still, seeming completely unconcerned about the past or future. I think the female gives me more of a sense that she knows what to do about those babes. The father seems a little more clumsy.

I think he had food and the little one latched on and he flicked. Then he wasn't getting covered by the mom or dad. I was worried about him/her. Then I saw it was back later, but the 3rd egg still hadn't hatched. Like said up thread, the longer it takes that egg to hatch it could become dinner for the siblings. It's real hard to watch sometimes. And those loud cars that keep going by. Must be annoying to the Eagles. It's annoying to me.

11. Generally...the female is the bigger of the two.

The female is usually the one to sit on the eggs throughout the night.
Her larger body mass, generating more heat, is more efficient for incubating the eggs.

It's so fascinating to watch them bring food back for the little ones, especially the fish! If only there was a cam to catch them actually hunting for and grabbing them out of the water! Yesterday the dad brought back a very impressively sized trout.

the little eaglets know to back up to the edge of the nest to defecate out-wards.
And they do it with some velocity too! ;-)

52. Do they wait to stockpile food until the eaglets are hatched?

They only had a rabbit and then a small fish at first. Now they're loading up. Do you
think they stay light at first because of the ensuing stench? A lot of this is new to me.

58. They will bring food to the nest as soon as they catch it.

Once the food is in the nest, they will continue to feed on it until it is gone.
You will see them drag out a dried-up morsel from under the bedding and eventually pick it clean.
BTW...all the liquid the eaglets need is in the prey. They don't have a need to drink water like your parakeet or canary does.
