Walker demotes son of campaign contributor

27-year-old had little experience, no college degree

April 5, 2011 |(599) Comments

Brian Deschane - the 27-year-old son of a prominent lobbyist - was demoted on Tuesday following a public uproar over his appointment to a cushy job earning $81,500 per year working in Gov. Scott Walker's administration.
...........................

Starting Wednesday, the younger Deschane will return to his job as a bureau director at the state Department of Regulation and Licensing, a post he took in mid-January at an annual salary of $64,728. His promotion led to a 26% increase in his pay.

"I'm assuming they're trying to minimize the damage," explained Mike McCabe, head of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign and a frequent critic of the first-term Republican governor.

In fact, an aide to Walker provided little explanation for the 180-degree turn regarding Deschane's promotion.

"When Governor Walker learned of the details of this agency staffing decision, he directed his administration to move in another direction," said spokesman Cullen Werwie.

Last week, Werwie described Deschane as a "natural fit" for the position at the Commerce Department.

3. A better question that should be asked everytime "Chinless" Scott
Pops his head out of whatever "hidy-hole" he's in is:

"WHY THE "EFF", AND HOW THE "EFF" DOES A 27-year-old with little experience, and no college degree, GET AN "EFFING" JOB AS A bureau director at the state Department of Regulation and Licensing, with an annual salary of $64,728 IN THE FIRST "EFFING" PLACE.

That is the "true" fraud and malfeasence here. It's not that he got promoted to a job...IT'S THAT HE HAD THIS TYPE OF "EFFING" JOB IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Were there other more qualified candidates?
Was there a vetting process?
Was this an "open" recruitment?
How many resumes were submitted for this position?

It seems that those should be the FIRST questions the media would ask of an administration that seems so concerned with the state's budget.

5. Clearly, there must have been more qualified candidates for the position
I agree. The state should provide the details of this HR decision. I have been involved in state hir8ing decisions before. The process is excruciatingly well-documented. The files exist. There had to be several finalists for the position. I find it impossible to believe this person was the most qualified.

8. So the guy who had the job since 2002 didn't even get an interview?
That doesn't even make sense. Unless of course he was a Democrat. I am wondering who the other applicants were who made the cut. They must have dredged people up out of a back alley in order to make Walker's crony's son seem the preferred choice!

10. Yeah, "learned of the details," ri-i-i-ight
Let me put it in a slightly different trope: When Gov. Walker learned that some people had found out about this "staffing decision," he decided to decide his decision in another, less corrupt-looking, direction. Verdict: Fail.

Interesting, though, that Mr. Walker seems to care what the public is thinking. This is a departure from his former practice.
