Scott Walker Demotes Donor's Son Following Uproar
Scott Walker, the Wisconsin governor who hired a donor’s unqualified son for a $81,500-a-year job in his administration to much uproar, has now reportedly demoted the young man.
-----
A few hours after the story broke, Walker announced that Deschane would be demoted and would lose the 26% raise he just received.
Deschane had been chosen over two other qualified candidates for the position as head of environmental and regulatory affairs in the state Department of Commerce.
The first, Oscar Herrera, is a former state cabinet secretary under Republican Gov. Scott McCallum with a doctoral degree and eight years' experience overseeing the cleanup of petroleum-contaminated sites.
The second, Bernice Mattsson, is a professional engineer who served since 2003 in the post to which Deschane was appointed, The Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reports.
By contrast, Deschane has no college degree, little management experience and a couple of drunken-driving convictions.
His father represents a trade group that gave more than $121,000 to Walker and his running mate, reports The Sentinel.

1. A little sunlight can work wonders. Cronyism just isn't an attractrive look. |

Walker couldn't stay unruffled under scrutiny. More sunlight! More, more more!

2. I wonder if Herrera and Mattsson have grounds for a lawsuit? |
|
This was an egregious action on the part of the governor...

This is basically an admission that the hiring of Deschane was improper. |
|
This is definitely a change from normal Republican behavior. It wasn't that long ago that a Republican would have stuck by and defended Deschane come hell or high water rather than do anything which might be an admission of guilt.

3. Can we agree to focus on Deschane's utter lack of qualifications... |
|
And omit the fact that he has two DUI charges and/or convictions?
I would think that the fact that he is utterly unqualified for the position to which he has acceded would be tarnishing enough without needing to bring up evidence of his possible alcoholism...

Driving under the influence endangers public safety and should be an immediate disqualifier for public office. He's fortunate he didn't kill somebody. Not every drunk driver is so fortunate. It isn't a victimless crime. Not by any stretch.

6. No, it is not a victimless crime in all instances... |
|
But nor is it a crime which victimizes in all instances either. I admit, multiple DUI convictions are troubling, and call into question one's judgment (or lack thereof), but such transgressions should not be afforded the same disqualifying importance as should the utter lack of training or pertinent knowledge relevant to the job at hand.

Multiple DUI convictions are ABSOLUTELY as relevant to utter lack of training or pertinent knowledge relevant to the job at hand. It makes a bad choice that much worse. An untrained bus driver is very bad, but an untrained bus driver that is stinking drunk is worse by a magnitude of ten. Granted this kid isn't driving a bus, but if these convictions are relatively recent an employer would be derelict in NOT considering them in a hiring situation.

8. Yes. It underlines the cronyism x10. |
|
Any civilian off the street with two DUIs would not be considered for a state position. Shoot, traffic tickets can keep you out of contention if you don't have connections.

12. DUI is never a victimless crime. |
|
When someone drives drunk it increases the likelihood of an accident for people on the road around the drunk driver.

13. At what point in Wisconsin is a DUI conviction a felony offense? |
|
I don't know the laws at all, but in many places once a driver has some number of DUIs or DUIs involved in accidents especially if they involved other people, the charges are escalated to felony level. If Deschane is at that level or close to it, his convictions are absolutely a matter of public concern.
IMO, any charge of DUI is a matter of public concern, but if it was only once and was not involved with other people and accidents, I might give the person a second chance.
