RadioShack stores in Montana, Idaho offer free guns

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) – RadioShack stores in parts of Idaho and Montana are offering free guns to first-time subscribers of satellite TV services, aiming to boost business in states where hunting and gun ownership are popular.

The new promotions by combination RadioShack and Dish Network dealerships in western Montana and another in southwest Idaho have attracted crowds that range from the merely curious to the firearm-friendly.

John Marshall, owner of a RadioShack store in Mountain Home, Idaho near Boise, said the flagging economy was behind the program he began advertising this week.

"There's no problem with it here; this isn't New York City," he said about a gun giveaway that has sparked criticism on blogs by gun-control advocates elsewhere.

There is (or was, it was a few years ago I heard about it) a car dealership in Missouri that gave guns to people who bought cars from them. Their sales quadrupled, so said the guy on the radio.

plus a free gun just adds to the fun of going out shooting, another model to play with at the gun range. so long as safety is respected marksmenship is as fun of a sport as any other. I quite often go traing with family when i am in the usa. None of us have ever killed another human outside of wars. We do eat nice deer for Christmas some years though.

have a completely different view of firearms than "city folks".

Rural residents view guns as tools rather than weapons. It is a fact of life that when you live on the borders of the "wilderness" you have issues with pests (varmints) that threaten not only your livelihood but your physical safety.

I have a buddy who lives in Wyoming and owns a cattle ranch. When he is working his land, he is rarely without a rifle and handgun quick at hand. When I asked if that was really necessary his response was, to the effect: coyotes aren't a big problem where you (me) live but out here they are a threat to him and his herd ($2000/head x 1000 head is not chump change). bare hands vs a coyote? that will not end well. coyote vs a rifle? that's a different story.

he went on to point out that I always have a cell phone at hand (yes, I know that a gun is different than a phone) yet he rarely carries his. why? because, as he pointed out, there is ZERO coverage out here so why bother? he said it's the same thing with his pistol. He carries it out here (waving from horizon to horizon) but when he goes into "town", he rarely, if ever, carries on on his hip (rifles in the gun rack of his pickup? that's another story).

the moral of the story is:

where you live, the needs and pressures, defines how you look at things. Out there, in the great outdoors, only a fool would be without a firearm. it is a safety/security issue. Most urban and suburban people forget that

It may be corny, but I had to give it a shot.
If they gave away golf clubs, at least you could get a hole in one...oh wait you might still do that with this promotion. And let's just hope you don't hit a birdie.
