Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Supreme Court candidates can raise unlimited sums for recount

Madison -- Both candidates for the Supreme Court took taxpayer money to run their campaigns under a new program that was meant to instill confidence in the public that justices are not beholden to parties who come before the court.

But with a recount all but certain, both Justice David Prosser and Assistant Attorney General JoAnne Kloppenburg will now be able to privately raise unlimited sums, according to the state's top election official.

Privately raising money would create messaging problems for both candidates, but particularly Kloppenburg. She routinely praised the public financing program throughout the campaign, saying it would remove any hint of impropriety in deciding cases.

The costs of the actual recount will be borne by state and county governments. But the candidates need money -- and lots of it -- to observe the vote counts around the state and do legal work. ..............(more)

...of money for recount observers, etc.


She has a very large pool of very willing volunteers at her disposal.

yes, the dem was 200 votes ahead..... but there will be a recount. plus the media spin to reframe it. there are already people claiming some kind of fraud to try to make it sound like it wasn't a legitimate win.
