people who said things like "anyone who knows what they're doing in Alaska won't be surprised to see this".

Don't know how common it still is or ever has been on DU outside of the dungeon, probably not that much. I like to post that link because I was completely baffled when I first learned of the phenomenon.

Earthquake lights are caused by an unknown mechanism. There are numerous theories as to how and why they occur.

my second would be arcing of major transmission lines.

problem with a 7.1 earthquake is that under these circumstances, the latest earthquake could be a foreshock or another aftershock.

Had a 6.3 here back in '93. Aftershocks continued for a couple of years.
