Interpretation
The potential of NDM-1 to be a worldwide public health problem is great, and co-ordinated international surveillance is needed.

I'm guessing from the abstract below that the Lancet article we haven't seen implies that NDM-1 is a highly contagious threat about to go blooey everywhere. The paper abstracted below claims the data doesn't support that conclusion.

5. That paper is only questioning if the origin of the gene is really India
The Lancet papers worry, is not really based on the origin of these genes, but that many of the resistant infections cases they looked at in the paper, carry the resistant gene on plasmids, which makes them easy to be horizontally transfered to other strains of bacteria.
