Planned Parenthood funding shutting down government?
Are Republicans threatening to shut down the government in a dispute over funding organizations which do not oppose abortion?

Government Shutdown 2011: Inside Wednesday Night's Budget Negotiations

....

Disagreements centered around whether or not the final legislative language should include a revamp of the way federal money is spent on family planning services. Republicans insisted that the system be amended so that funds be sent through state governments instead of directly to organizations -- like Planned Parenthood -- themselves. Democrats countered that such a change would be a de facto means of not just denying abortions but also limiting access to cancer screenings, pap smears, and blood pressure checks, among other things. ....

11. I agree
I see the story as Republican cover. Their base hates the program with no rhyme or reason thus they are less likely to get angry at them if they think it is over this. Dems as usual see more than eager to sell this story too. Ugh.

2. Um
I don't understand. You think democrats should cave on that point and let republicans deny funds to planned parenthood?

It is what it is. If I don't say something, I didn't say that.

You can assume I'm a real Dem, of course, if you wish!

12. No I think most Dems think allowing framing of this budget debate
in thus terms is UGLY and NOT TRUTHFUL. Dems are allowing Republicans to use NPR and planned parenthood as a cover for a whole political philosophy. Dems shouldn't be arguing with tax cuts of their own but their OWN POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY. Raise the tax rates on rich back to Clinton level etc, get out of our wars,...

4. Actually
aren't they also threatening a shutdown over defunding the health care law, NPR, and something to do with the EPA too?

They have to be pretty stupid to believe that they will be able to get President Obama or the Democrats to agree to any of those items except for maybe the EPA one (which I think has to do with regulating greenhouse gases).

President Obama should go on TV and demand a "clean" budget bill and force the Republicans to hold separate votes on their individual "riders" IMHO.

6. No, it's social spending, altogether.

That means TANF, food stamps, block grants to states that supply Medicaid to keep poor, sick old folks in nursing home beds, and their holy grail, Medicare and Social Security.

If it helps a human being, they hate it.

They honestly think we the people need to be punished into prosperity. It makes no sense on any level except a visceral one for people who are too stupid to realize the bankers caused this mess and they're the ones who need to tighten their belts--and go to prison.

I've been listening to a few baggers here and there. They're absolutely giddy over the prospect of NO GOVERNMENT. Until it happens.

7. The Teabaggers Win Either Way
Either we let them kill off all the programs they don't like,
or they shut down the entire government.

They win either way.
