Trump brings media blitz to NBC, ‘steamrolls’ Meredith Vieira on birther issue

As reports that Meredith Vieira is planning an exit from NBC's "Today Show" swirl, the anchor has sparked controversy over her failure to question a number of unsubstantiated challenges to the U.S. citizenship of President Barack Obama that Donald Trump floated in an interview with Vieira this morning.

Trump--the billionaire real estate tycoon and reality TV figure who is flirting with a 2012 presidential run--again sought to suggest that Obama was not born in the United States. "Birther" activists on the right have circulated the unsubstantiated claim in an effort to depict Obama's presidency as the outgrowth of a shadowy, constitutionally illegitimate conspiracy.

The birther position has been thoroughly debunked, and it hasn't gained traction within the journalistic mainstream. But Trump has nonetheless been on a media blitz in recent weeks promoting it.

When the issue came up on "Today"--which airs on the same network as Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice"--Vieira didn't exactly hold his feet to the fire.

It must be a great thing being a Republican politician. Right wingers give them a free pass on the deficit during the Bush Years. Than liberals give you a free pass, because they are conditioned by the corporate media to only blame Democrats. 2. It was a really lame interview

He spouted his bullshit and she did not challenge him. How hard would it have been to ask for some verification as to where the 2 million dollar figure Trump cited that Obama paid in lawyers fees to make this issue go away. Seriously, these birthers pull numbers out of their asses and they go unchallenged.

I always thought he was fairly bright, but wow. Tells me something about what's required for a degree from Harvard Business. Bush AND Trump! LOL!! If anyone wants to see the whole world laugh at America, elect Trump in 2012. That would do it!

Trump used to be quite liberal and pretty much progressive on his thinking. What if this is just Trump having some fun and media exposure at the birther's expense? He's already the 2nd most popular candidate behind Romney. He's sucking up all of the media at the expense of other Republican candidates. It would not surprise me in the least if he was to announce, just before the Republican primaries..."hey folks, just kidding about that birther thing...you didn't think I was serious, did you? What, you think I'd be that crazy?"
