Airline passengers unloaded after 11 hours waiting on JFK tarmac

New York (CNN) -- Airline passengers who spent 11 hours stuck on the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport were unloaded Tuesday afternoon in the latest example of the frustrating effects of a massive blizzard that delayed thousands of would-be holiday travelers.

"There were a lot of people on the plane crying," said passenger Christina Edgar. "It was really a tough situation." She called the situation "just a bad judgment call."

"They kept trying to get us to go, and they kept us on the plane with no choice," Edgar said.

Travelers aboard the Cathay Pacific Airways flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, arrived in New York at 2:12 a.m. ET on Tuesday. They got off the plane shortly after 1 p.m. ET.

"It wasn't fun with three children sitting there," said passenger Vincent Butcher. "No one has admitted to making any mistakes."...

3. I have a spinal injury.
If they kept me on the Tarmac for 11 hours they would need the jaws of life and a backboard to get me out. I would be seized up, in spasm and locked up. Moving by myself at that point would not be an option.

11 hours without drink, food, toilets? Sweet jumping jehosfat, that's nuts.

19. Oh did I mention the PTSD?
But yah, spinal injuries are not for wimps. Imagine the pain of getting kicked in the balls with steel toed boots(or perhaps having you nipples pulled off with pliers) and multiply it by about 10. I thought I knew what pain was until this. FYI - I've had to learn to walk 3 times after accidents. I've been hit by a train. Broken ribs in the ring. Fought in prison riots. I'll take any of that shit over this. This shit is unrelenting.

I appreciate your kind words. Peace and good health to you and your family.

24. On the bright side I'm getting to experience lots of world class pain killers
Although the side effects like nose bleeds and barfing are kinda a downer ... But at least the beer is nice.

Hey it sucks but on the bright side I'm emigrating to a civilized country where treatment is available.

16. I have MS and a decent case of claustrophobia
I would be both spastic and have had long since a total freakout if they had not let me stick my face out the door for some fresh air. Shudder. It creeps me out just to think of being confined that long.

2. Oh, boo hoo
Nobody's forcing you to fly, it's not a constitutional right or anything. So if in the infinite wisdom and mercy of the airline, the airport personnel or the TSA it's your lot to sit snowbound in a plane for 11 hours, then you should be damn grateful the pilot didn't come strolling down the aisle and shoot every third one of you. No mistakes were made and perfect judgment was exercised, and you're just providing aid and comfort to the terrorists by complaining. There is no guarantee of considerate, humane treatment, and therefore you should have no expectation of same. And if the powers that be decide you now have to submit to a full body cavity search, then that's what's going to happen. You think if you're blown to pieces by terrorists, you're going to worry about being confined in a plane for 11 hours? I rather think not.

Get with the program, you whiners!

Can you tell this is sarcasm?

and screw the tourists. This is what they want to happen stifle travel and make it a misery. TSA is getting ridiculous, they don't check freight much nor do they actually secure the field.

23. I will have to say
Edited on Tue Dec-28-10 10:46 PM by Caretha
if this post isn't sarcasm then it is the worst diatribe betraying humanity that I've read in the new 21st century here at Du. At first it shocked me so badly, that I didn't see any sarcasm and posted an alert.

The more I thought about it, it became clear to me that it was...sarcasm. It's just that in the past couple of years, I have read so many threads that sounded almost like this one, posted by so called Democrats, that I believed yours to be true.

I just want to say I'm sorry for having alerted on you. It just shocked me....I thought yeah, that's where DU has been heading and finally it's here.

Sorry,

Caretha

27. I've been alerted on before
No harm, no foul. But yes, as you say, this very sentiment seems all too prevalent even here among some of the most enlightened folks I've read on the internet. It staggers me to consider how effective bromides such as "it's for your own good" or "it could be worse" are in pacifying the rabble.

4. This kind of crap is why I don't fly(aside from not being able to afford it)
I have health issues and would be in really bad shape in this amount of time.

18. I hope you don't drive

This kind of thing is "news" precisely because of its relative infrequency. Do you know how many flights there are each day?

11. Domestic flights only, apparently. Int'l flights are said to be exempt.
Still, it should apply to int'l flights in US airports.

15. Yet another reason I do not fly during bad weather seasons or high volume holiday times.
Thank you very much.

I'll take my chances only on reasonably good weather (you never know) situations and off-holidays...

25. One "bad judgment call" should not result ...
... in an 11 hour delay. That should take at least 3 or 4 "bad judgment calls".
