Why isn't the drug supplement industry regulated? |
|
Edited on Fri Apr-08-11 12:36 PM by IrishBuckeye
I'm posting this question because another thread asked 'should drug testing be required for welfare recipients' which is an idea supported by Rep Orrin Hatch. How ironic that such a proposal involving drug testing is supported by a man who for years has fought for lax regulation of the dietary supplement industry. Orrin Hatch, the man who wrote the law that exempted makers of diet supplements from having to prove to the FDA that they are safe and effective in 1994 now wants to test the poor for drug use?
So government regulation of the dietary supplemental drug industry which sells billions of drugs to Americans every year: bad. Drug testing poor Americans in need of benefits: good. In Hatch's world companies need not test nor prove that their supplements are effective or safe before selling them but people who need benefits should be required to be tested?
For the business, by the business. I guess I answered my own question.

1. Oh and if your wondering why Hatch would be so friendly to the drug supplement industry... |
|
It's the 3rd largest industry in Utah, his home state.

2. I don't have a problem with drug testing |
|
so called welfare recipients as long as ALL of them are drug tested. That would include any corporations CEO, officers, board and management that get even 1 cent of govt. subsidies. Oh and all Representatives and Senators along with staff be drug and alcohol tested daily when in session.

3. Nor do I, but I think the more important priority is testing the drugs pushed on the population |
|
by the supplement industry! How can a Senator support drug testing on people yet oppose it on the actually drugs sold (for safety and effectiveness) to the public is my issue.
