Politico: Government shutdown avoided? GOP reviewing latest offer ($40 billion in cuts)
The threat of a government shutdown diminished late Friday night after White House and congressional negotiators reached agreement on controversial policy riders in the stalled government funding measure, and closed in on a final compromise on cuts of more than $40 billion.

House Republican leaders and their top staff were in Speaker John Boehner’s office vetting a detailed White House budget proposal that would keep the government funded and prevent a shutdown.

House Rules and Appropriations committee staff filed into Boehner’s suite of offices in the Capitol, as did Ways and Means Committee Reps. Patrick Tiberi (R-Ohio), Charlie Dent (R-Pa.) and Darrell Issa (R-Calif.

The breakthrough came late Friday evening but there are still hurdles regarding the final details on spending cuts, and it’s unclear whether the latest round of negotiating will be enough to avert a government shutdown at midnight.

1. Always ask for a lot more than you want so that you can get what you do want in negotiatians
pretty standard. Obama should have ask for only $1 in cuts :)

7. That's a lesson Obama never really learned
I love the guy, but he is not a good negotiator.

2. Only if I get to shove every dime up their asses.
Which barely comes close to how I really feel about these ignorant assholes.

3. If we hold out long enough
we could probably get it down to 10 billion or less.

4. Didn't we originally say we were firm at 32?
Is giving it up the only thing Democrats know how to do?

5. But if the R's held out longer.
They probably could have gotten that 61 billion they wanted. I mean Obama and Reid had already run the amount up to 32 billion days before now. They should have stuck to their guns and said no more. Just like the Rude Pundit said, they offered to chop down our tree, burn down our house, and kick us in the nuts and here we are thinking that not getting kicked in the nuts is a good compromise.

6. Not even an hour ago we were at 39 billion
If they keep this up, the final number will be the 100 billion the teabaggers wanted in the first place. So the PP business WAS just a sham after all. If I were the Democrats I'd take off 1 billion for ever 10 minutes of the republicans stalling, until they arrive at zero cuts.
