A Picture Is Worth... Aaaaaaaaaahhh !!!
Nobody was hurt, thank goddess.

Via KTLA: Highway 330 en route to Big Bear collapsed last Sunday evening as a result of the torrential rains, leaving an impassable hole in the road. KTLA reports that travelers are advised to take Highway 38 if they want to reach Big Bear. There were no injuries as a result of the collapse.

6. well around here, the question of "Why" often follows "Can I get to Big Bear?"
so IF you want, there's several ways up that mountain. Look out for snowbillies.

4. Had this happen to a friend & her mom.
She was following mom's car when noticed couldn't see the tail lights anymore so slowed down thinking "wtf?" then slammed on brakes. The road gave out as mom was going across, mom was fine, just a bit shook up.

12. I do, and thanks for the concern. I'm part of a community website called socalmountains.com and
someone monitors local police, fire, and other scanners 24/7. We knew about the washout minutes after it happened.

What's worst for me is that I live on the end of the lake that makes that route the fastest down the mountain, and taking the 38 adds a lot of miles to an already long drive.

Thanks for thinking of me. I'm flattered I really am.

13. Glad to hear you're ok.
I grew up in So. Cal. and have spent many happy vacations at either Arrowhead or Big Bear, winter and summer. Loved the photos you posted recently!

14. Taking my camera with me tomorrow for sure. I HATE driving up the 38.
I'll be driving it in the morning during the worst of the storm, and in the afternoon in the worst of the wind.

Wish me luck!

10. Those are two of the only six lanes that lead to and from my house in Big Bear Lake.
The 330 washed away a couple of years ago and it was closed for MONTHS. That's my normal way of getting down the mountain, since I live on the west end of the lake by the dam.

Taking the 38 adds 40 miles to any trip and tomorrow morning I'll be driving down the 38 when it's snowing the hardest. I have a 9:00 a.m. appointment in Redlands and will probably have to leave no later than 6:00 to get there on time.

Here is a link to a few good pictures of the damage, and some damage before the whole freaking thing gave way. Check out the Chevy pickup. Was that person lucky or WHAT? The truck got stuck less than a mile from where the road gave way.
