GENEVA (AP) - Snipers are targeting children in the besieged rebel-held Libyan city of Misrata, the U.N.' s children agency said Friday.

Hundreds of residents have been killed and wounded in the assault by Gadhafi's forces on Libya's third-largest city, and residents are running short of water, food and medicine.

"What we have are reliable and consistent reports of children being among the people targeted by snipers in Misrata," UNICEF spokeswoman Marixie Mercado told reporters in Geneva.

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) — The rules for Libyan media were absolute: Don't print, broadcast or post anything bad about leader Moammar Gadhafi. Libyan journalists who crossed the line risked prison or death.

"It was as if Gadhafi was a prophet sent by Allah," editor Fatah Khashmi said. "He was free from blame and never made mistakes."

Less than two months after the anti-Gadhafi uprising broke out, journalists in the rebel-held east are happily shaking off the old rules and creating a media boomlet. At least half a dozen new publications have appeared in the de facto rebel capital of Benghazi, and a former state-run radio station now broadcasts the rebel cause.

The newspapers are a motley lot, full of political tirades, nationalistic poetry, homage to "martyrs" killed battling government forces and political cartoons mocking Gadhafi and his family.

BEIRUT, April 8 (Reuters) - Rebels said they fought off an assault on the east of Misrata by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on Friday.

A rebel spokesman said government troops had advanced on the heavily populated Esqeer district in an effort to loosen the rebels' grip on Misrata, where families are crammed together in the few remaining safe districts.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it expected a humanitarian vessel it had chartered to reach Misrata by midday on Saturday but gave no details of the relief cargo it was carrying.

"The attack from the east has been repelled now and the (pro-Gaddafi) forces have been pushed back," a rebel spokesman, who gave his name as Hassan al-Misrati, told Reuters by phone.

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2011/0408/With-Libya-rebels-stalled-frustration-with-NATO-mounts">With Libya rebels stalled, frustration with NATO mounts
When NATO warplanes hit three Libyan rebel tanks west of Ajdabiya yesterday, the airstrikes touched off a panicked exodus from the city. The errant attacks also set off wild rumors that Col. Muammar Qaddafi’s air force once again controlled Libya's skies.

The strikes were a case of mistaken identity, the deputy head of the alliance's Libya operations insisted today. “The situation in the area is still very fluid, with tanks and other vehicles moving in different directions,” British Rear Admiral Russell Harding told reporters, adding that it was the first time NATO had encountered rebel tanks on the move.

But the reaction to the incident demonstrates a growing well of frustration in Libya’s east as rebels begin to realize that international action is not designed to win their war for them. In Benghazi, and among the lightly armed rebel militia, the first seeds of doubt are also emerging that Colonel Qaddafi will be removed from power soon.

The above link is to an overview of why Obama's implementation of the NFZ and R2P is perfectly legal under the law. I will not post it entirely here, however, all objections come down to the misinformed position that Obama, by using forces in Libya, was invoking Article 43 of the United Nations. This is wrong. Obama invoked Article 42, which does not require congressional approval to implement. Proof of this is that Article 43 has http://www.un.org/en/sc/repertoire/actions.shtml#rel5">never been used.

It goes like this: The US law (Title 22, Chap. 7, Subchap. XIV § 287d) grants the President the right to invoke UN Article 42 http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/uscode22/usc_sec_22_00000287---d000-.html">without authorization, the War Powers Act (Title 50, Chap. 33 § 1541) grants the President permission to act without authorization under http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/50/1541–1548.html">"specific statutory authorization" which, by definition, is what 287d does. § 1543 of the War Powers Act requires the President to report to Congress, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/obama_explains_libya_mission_to_congress/2011/03/03/ABU9377_blog.html">which he did. One can argue all day and night about the legality of the War Powers Act, doesn't change the fact that under the law as it is written, the President acted within the law.

Fortunately, the Council wasn't made-in-the-USA or manufactured by another foreign power. Rather it came into existence, a month ago, at Libyans' own initiative, soon after the winds of revolutionary change blew Libya's way, and after its people rose to the occasion with pride and courage.

During weeks of reporting in Benghazi and along the chaotic, shifting front line, I’ve spent a great deal of time with these volunteers. The hard core of the fighters has been the shabab—the young people whose protests in mid-February sparked the uprising. They range from street toughs to university students (many in computer science, engineering, or medicine), and have been joined by unemployed hipsters and middle-aged mechanics, merchants, and storekeepers. There is a contingent of workers for foreign companies: oil and maritime engineers, construction supervisors, translators. There are former soldiers, their gunstocks painted red, green, and black—the suddenly ubiquitous colors of the pre-Qaddafi Libyan flag.

The interim national council, formed by opposition groups in Libya, has said it will hold free and fair elections and draft a national constitution. Here is its eight-point plan in full.

Mohammed Nabbous, killed by Gaddafi's forces while trying to report on the massacre in Benghazi

"I'm not afraid to die, I'm afraid to lose the battle" -Mohammed Nabbous, a month ago when all this began

I'm struggling to come up with something to say about this man. I was not aware of the Libyan uprising until I saw Mo's first report, begging for help, posted here on DU. I was stricken. Here was a man giving everything he had to explain a situation that clearly terrified him, I would not call him a coward in that moment, but you could see the fear in his eyes, and desperation in his voice. For 30 days Nabbous would spend many hours covering the uprising in Benghazi. For many nights I would go to sleep with the webcast of Benghazi live on my computer screen, looking to it occasionally to be sure it was still 'there.' Mo treated the chat room as if we were his friends, and in some way, we were. I never signed up to LiveStream to thank him for all his work and it seems somewhat shallow to do so now, given that I was a lurker for so long. Ever since I took over posting these threads "Libya Alhurra" has been linked as a source of information. It wasn't until last night, when I posted, and twitter posted on Mo's adventures out into Benghazi to try to determine the truth of the situation, that Mo's webchannel became a hit, over 2000 people were watching him stream live. This was curious to him because he'd done many reports like this in the past but he appeared somewhat bemused that the view count exploded as it did. Last night Mo became a star. This is a man who first started out with a webcast replete with fear and desperation finally overcoming that aspect of himself and losing that fear, to become someone who was a fighter for the resistance just as much as those who held the guns. Reporting on the front lines of Benghazi became his final act, and for that he should never, ever be forgotten. I'm so sorry Mo that I never got to know you better.

Mo's first report, which many of you may remember, begging for help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38EXALI60hg

Mo's last report, a fallen hero trying to spread the word to the world: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ecu_iWLn-rg

Mo leaves behind a wife who is with child, she had http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2011/03/23/a_bright_voice_from_libyas_darkness">this to say about the No Fly Zone and R2P UN resolution:

We started this in a pure way, but he turned it bloody. Thousands of our men, women, and children have died. We just wanted our freedom, that's all we wanted, we didn't want power. Before, we could not do a single thing if it was not the way he wanted it. All we wanted was freedom. All we wanted was to be free. We have paid with our blood, with our families, with our men, and we're not going to give up. We are still going to do that no matter what it takes, but we need help. We want to do this ourselves, but we don't have the weapons, the technology, the things we need. I don't want anyone to say that Libya got liberated by anybody else. If NATO didn't start moving when they did, I assure you, I assure you, half of Benghazi if not more would have been killed. If they stop helping us, we are going to be all killed because he has no mercy anymore.

In the name of God, most Gracious Most Merciful,

A report on the latest events in the city of Misratah for today, Friday 8th April 2011. Since the morning at around 8.30am, we heard the sounds of loud explosions which some thought were NATO forces striking Gaddafi’s forces, but we didn’t hear the sounds of fighter jets flying over the city of Misratah. After that, we came to know that these were the sound of exploding bombs made by the revolutionaries, also known as “Jelateena”. The revolutionaries detonated these bombs in Tripoli street, and in the Insurance building to be more precise. A mercenary inside the building was captured when he came down and attempted to escape.

The revolutionaries managed to capture him in An Nasr Square after which Gaddafi’s forces attempted to enter Tripoli Street and open a route for reinforcements to reach the snipers which were stationed on the roofs of building.

Gaddafi’s forces attempted to enter with 3 tanks and a huge bulldozer. They tried to remove the shipping crates filled with sand that the revolutionaries placed as a barrier to prevent reinforcement being transported. They also resumed their random bombardment, but the revolutionaries fought back and managed to destroy one tank causing the remaining tanks to withdraw and leave Tripoli Street completely.

7. It's actually been kind of slow
I got some sleep last night (after staying up late to deal with some of my computer issues). Been feeling drowsy for a while, though.

I need to run some errands and then do some more troubleshooting on 'HAL,' if you can hold down the fort. HAL's not installing OS updates, and the missing updates are the cause of HAL's freezes and crashes. I may be able to make a lot of progress by finding and fixing one bad pathway--wish me luck!

5. Can Libya's Rebels Go Pro?

The shift in who's fighting the war is probably not a sign that the old amateur rebels have been enlisted under a new command structure, but rather that they've mostly gone home to Benghazi, Derna, Al-Bayda, and other eastern cities.

...

The staff at a rebel training camp I visited this morning, which has been running since late February, told me they had expanded their activities recently. This may be both because of internal pressure to better organize the rebels and because of external questions (from Western leaders) about who exactly the rebels are. One staff member explained that people who had past military training -- i.e. before the revolution -- were being given additional training before being sent to the front. Rebels with no past military experience were also being trained, and will be used for civilian functions: manning highway inspection posts, patrolling cities, and so forth. In each case, the training courses are two weeks long. It's not Quantico, but it's a start.

...

From the perspective of the Benghazi street, Misrata and Al-Zawiyah are now the opposition's heroic outposts. A Turkish hospital ship recently stopped in Benghazi on its way from Misrata, bearing many severely wounded people, including quite a few amputees. A crowd gathered outside the ship (even though access to the quay was restricted), chanting that Qaddafi would soon fall and that Misrata would be free. Today, I drove through a traffic roundabout in Benghazi that had been renamed "Circle of the Misrata Marytrs." Graffiti at the next traffic light read, "Hail the martyrs of Zawiyah."

Thanks to pinboy3niner for finding this, it was worth reposting!

Many people don't know, but Zawiyah was strongly anti-Gaddafi until he cracked down on dissent. Law 15, baby.

Rebels Fight U.S. for Funds It Seized

BY JAY SOLOMON

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration and Libyan rebels are wrestling for control of $34 billion the Treasury Department seized from the financial holdings of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

...

On Thursday, the rebel council sent Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner a letter detailing measures it said could allow for the quick disbursement—and thorough monitoring—of some of the money.

Click on image to read the letter

"The Council now needs immediate access to the regime's frozen assets in U.S. financial institutions to meet the basic needs of the Libyan people," said the letter, which was signed by the Council's top envoy in Washington, Ali Aujali. He resigned as Col. Gadhafi's ambassador to the U.S. in February, as the government intensified a violent crackdown on street protestors. The council urged Mr. Geithner to set up a joint U.S.-rebel trustee committee to manage the assets.

Council members said the U.S. need not distribute the cash to the rebels, but could instead directly pay suppliers for food, medicine and other humanitarian goods. The council said an international auditor should be appointed to track the money's use.

...

Treasury officials said they were continuing to work with the council to examine ways to responsibly distribute the funds. Mr. Obama would likely release them with an executive order.

WASHINGTON | Tue Mar 15, 2011 5:09pm EDT

(Reuters) - The Obama administration put Libya's foreign minister on a blacklist on Tuesday and sought ways to tap into some of the billions of dollars of seized Libyan assets to aid an embattled Libyan opposition.

The Treasury Department put Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa on a blacklist shortly after the White House said it was exploring ways to funnel cash to rebels fighting forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

The United States and other world powers so far have held back on the assistance the opposition is pleading for -- more weapons and a no-fly zone -- to fend off being overrun by Gaddafi's forces.

"We are exploring authorities to free up some of the seized regime assets, the $32 billion-plus that has been seized, to provide financial support for the opposition," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

They concluded that the TNC is a legitimate popular movement for democracy, removing concerns about "we don't know who they are" and questions of extremist/AQ influence.

From the NYT's news blog:

Houston Oil Lobbyists Paid for Former Congressman’s Libya Mission

By ROBERT MACKEY

A private diplomatic mission to Libya by a former U.S. congressman, who wanted to meet Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi and convince him to step aside, was paid for by two Houston businessmen whose firm brokers oil and gas deals in unstable countries.

The former congressman, Curt Weldon, who left Libya on Friday, after he failed to secure a meeting with Colonel Qaddafi and had to settle for talks with one of his sons, Saadi, told CNN on Thursday night his trip “was paid for by the team of Steve Payne and Brian Ettinger of Houston.”

In a statement sent to The Lede on Friday from Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Mr. Payne and Mr. Ettinger, who have worked at the nexus of international relations and the energy industry for many years, confirmed that they had paid Mr. Weldon’s travel expenses and accompanied him on his trip.

The statement added that while Mr. Payne “has deep and wide contacts in Libya, and has a long term relationship with three of the sons of Muammar Qaddafi,” the two men “have no current business in Libya or with the Qaddafi family.” But Mr. Payne and Mr. Ettinger once boasted that Libya was a part of the world where their firm, Worldwide Strategic Energy, had “influence.”

A confidential document describing the firm’s accomplishments, obtained and posted online by the Web site Talking Points Memo in 2008, told potential investors that Worldwide Strategic Energy had “been engaged in Libya since 2005, holding multiple meetings in London, Geneva, Moscow and Tripoli with key oil ministry officials, as well as with Seif el-Qaddafi, president of the Qaddafi Foundation for Development and son of the Leader Muammar el-Qaddafi.”

In a description of his plan for ending the conflict in Libya published on The New York Times Op-Ed Page on Wednesday, Mr. Weldon wrote that “Colonel Qaddafi’s son Seif, a powerful businessman and politician, could play a constructive role as a member of the committee to devise a new government structure or Constitution.”

Speaking to CNN on Thursday night, the former congressman suggested that Seif el-Qaddafi “should be given the opportunity to seek office where he can run against other candidates, perhaps, for the presidency,” if Colonel Qaddafi would agree to stand aside and allow elections to take place.

In Tripoli's medina, young men stand in the shadows of the narrow alleyways fingering rolls of grubby banknotes, offered in exchange for euros or dollars. "You want money?" they quietly ask the few westerners still in the city, which has seen sporadic coalition bombardment for the past two weeks.

How much, we ask one. There is a pause before he settles on 190 Libyan dinars for $100 – a substantial difference to the official exchange rate of around 120. How's business, how are things generally, we inquire. "Bad," he says, eyes twitching from side to side, wary of the ubiquitous government minders and spies. "The banks are closed, there is no work." He declines to say more.

In the old city souk around him, many shops are shuttered. This is the area of the medina selling jewellery and copperware; in times of conflict and uncertainty, few people's impulse is to shop for decorative adornments.

UN rights investigators to start probe in Libya

Fri Apr 8, 2011 2:49pm GMT

By Stephanie Nebehay

GENEVA (Reuters) - United Nations investigators said on Friday they would start next week to probe alleged human rights violations committed by all sides in Libya's conflict and share evidence with the U.N. war crimes tribunal.

...

The three-member team, headed by American war crimes expert Cherif Bassiouni, declined to reveal its exact travel schedule but will stop first in Egypt and also visit Tunisia and Libya.

It would gather testimony and evidence widely, including on rape and use of mercenaries, and make every effort to protect witnesses from reprisals.

"We'll talk to everybody. We will be visiting hospitals, so we will be talking to people who are injured, we will be going to prisons, we'll talk to people who are in prison," the Egyptian-born Bassiouni told a news conference in Geneva.

"We will be talking to combatants, civilians, any available source of information will be addressed," he said.

...

Bassiouni, asked whether the inquiry would look into any crimes by foreign powers, said: "If you read the mandate, it said human rights violations in Libya. It doesn't say by whom, it doesn't say against whom. Period. Whoever commits a violation will be reported."

Khader, an expert in sexual crimes, said it would look into rapes, including the case of a Libyan woman Eman al-Obaidi who last month accused pro-government militiamen of gang-raping her.

"We all watched the case of Obaidi and we heard that there are other women in the same case. Of course it will be one major part of our investigation."

WRAPUP 1-Rebels repel assault on Misrata, five dead

* Rebels say assault by Gaddafi forces repelled

* Resident says five killed in Misrata fighting

* Air strikes hit Zintan weapons depots

(Updates with Misrata dead, Zintan air strikes)

By Maria Golovnina

TRIPOLI, April 9 (Reuters) - Libyan rebels said on Friday they had repulsed a government assault on the besieged western port city of Misrata and a resident said five people were killed in the fighting.

Prospects faded that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi would be ousted by the armed revolt and NATO leaders acknowledged the limits of their air power, which has caused rather than broken a military stalemate.

Alliance officials expressed frustration that Gaddafi's tactics of sheltering his armour in civilian areas had reduced the effects of air supremacy and apologised for a "friendly fire" incident on Thursday in which rebels said five fighters were killed. Misrata, a lone major rebel outpost in the west of the country, has been under siege by Gaddafi's forces for weeks. On Friday, insurgents said they had pushed back an assault on the eastern flank of the coastal city after fierce street battles.

A rebel spokesman said government troops had advanced on the heavily populated Esqeer district in an effort to loosen the rebels' grip on Misrata, where families are crammed together in the few remaining safe districts. Continued...

Libyan rebels forgiving of NATO error

A spokesman says the 'benefits outweigh the damage' after NATO airplanes mistakenly hit rebel forces. A NATO official acknowledges the error but says the forces won't try to improve communication with rebels.

By Ned Parker and Borzou Daragahi, Los Angeles Times

April 9, 2011

Reporting from Benghazi, Libya, and Tripoli, Libya—

Rebel leaders in Libya said Friday that they must accept accidental deaths caused by NATO airstrikes as a consequence of international efforts to protect civilians.

"You have to look at the big pictures. The benefits outweigh the damage," rebel spokesman Mustafa Gheriani said. "We have to accept these kinds of mistakes and hope not too many take place. NATO is important for us and has saved a lot of lives."

A NATO-led alliance is leading a battle to prevent Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi's forces from harming civilians in several parts of the country, especially the rebel-controlled east, where pro-Kadafi forces and those opposed to the longtime ruler have been locked in a battlefield stalemate.

NATO appeared to acknowledge that for the second time in less than a week its actions may have resulted in rebel deaths.

"It would appear that two of our strikes yesterday (Thursday) may have resulted in the deaths of a number of (Transitional National Council) forces," British Rear Adm. Russell Harding, deputy commander of the alliance's operation in Libya, told reporters in Naples, Italy.

Times staff writers Henry Chu in London and David S. Cloud in Washington contributed to this report.

28. Thousands of people gathered in Tahrir Square before 6am Saturday to "reclaim the square"
EGYPT: Twitter user yj787 has posted this picture from Tahrir Square this morning. Cars have been set ablaze nearby, that's probably where the smoke in the background is coming from.

EGYPT: Al Jazeera's Adam Makary in Tahrir says thousands of people have now gathered in the square, saying they won't leave until they've "reclaimed the square". Makary says he's seen some protesters with injuries from the clashes earlier this morning but no casualties have been confirmed.

And it looks like more are going the G route -- Yemen, Syria --

Answer -- just use more violence!!

My link now has a new headline -- just updating for the record --

Anger flares at Egypt army for lethal protest raid

Slideshow: Egypt Interior Ministry burns as police protest

CAIRO – Demonstrators burned cars and barricaded themselves with barbed wire in Cairo's central Tahrir Square, demanding the resignation of the military's chief Saturday hours after troops violently dispersed a protest there, killing at least one and injuring 71.

In the pre-dawn raid on the square, hundreds of soldiers beat protesters with clubs and fired into the air in the square, highlighting the rising tensions between protesters and the military leaders whom they praised in Tahrir two months ago when President Hosni Mubarak fell from power.

They also want resignation of Field Marshall Mohammed Hussein Tantawi -- a Mubarak appointee --

who now heads the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces ruling over Egypt now -- comprised of

the military's top generals. Plus new presidential Council to lead country -- they want those

behind the killing of protesters post-1/23 uprising put on trial -- and faster prosecution of

Mubarak and his family and others involved in the corruption.

They're also saying this guy Tantawi is Mubarak and vice versa -- that the "demands of the

revolution" have to be speeded up - and they complain of military's secrecy.

Evidently, the military is still TORTURING protesters -- post the uprising!

The original article has been greatly changed -- with less emphasis on the army officers who

have joined this protest and their agreement that the Supreme Council is not trustworthy.

300 soldiers attacked the protesters at 3am -- at least two dead -- 71 wounded.

26. Almanara Media is truly fantastical.
I watch the Libyan state TV, which has its shares of doozies for sure. Almanara is in the same league in that respect. I know how war propaganda is, however.

If you add it all, Benghazi must be brimming with many, many thousands of POWs. How can they arrest 150 people in Brega? Where did they take them? What's the point of the news story they produced? It's is interesting to hear, however.

54. Certainly highly questionable
I almost added the tag "propaganda alert" to the post. A casual google search turns-up no links that don't simple go back to re-tweets of the original Almanara "report". I didn't because thought, if they've really captured a brigadier general they'll have to parade him in front of the reporters soon enough, and we'll know for sure.

NATO role under fire in Libya stalemate

April 9, 2011 - 1:54PM

AFP

Forces loyal to Libya's under-siege dictator Muammar Gaddafi shelled rebels in Misrata with civilian deaths reported as NATO's role in the conflict faced scrutiny with no endgame in sight.

The fighting in Misrata came after government troops shelled the edge of Ajdabiya, further east, forcing insurgents to retreat, and as the European Union announced measures to evacuate the wounded and provide food, water and medical supplies.

"There is an intense exchange of fire with light arms, rockets and heavy artillery between the rebels and the regime's army," said an AFP journalist who was among a group of journalists brought to Misrata by Libyan authorities.

...

Pressing the United Nations to allow a humanitarian mission, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton sent a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon saying the 27-nation bloc was ready to come to the aid of Misrata.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110409/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_syria">Syrian protests turn deadly; 32 reported killed
BEIRUT – Mass protests calling for sweeping changes in Syria's authoritarian regime turned deadly Friday, with the government and protesters both claiming heavy casualties as the country's three-week uprising entered a dangerous new phase.

The bloodiest clashes occurred in the restive city of Daraa, where human rights activists and witnesses said Syrian security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters, killing 25 people and wounding hundreds.

At the same time, state-run TV said 19 policemen and members of the security forces were killed when gunmen opened fire on them. It was the first significant claim of casualties by the Syrian government, which has contended that armed gangs rather than true reform-seekers are behind the unrest — and it could signal plans for a stepped-up retaliation.

The protests were in response to calls by organizers to take to the streets every Friday to demand change in one of the most rigid nations in the Middle East. Marches were held in cities across the country as the movement showed no sign of letting up, despite the violent crackdowns.

SYRIA US President Barack Obama has criticised the the Syrian government's latest crackdown in which at least 27 people were killed in the southern city of Daraa yesterday.

I strongly condemn the abhorrent violence committed against peaceful protesters by the Syrian government today and over the past few weeks. I also condemn any use of violence by protesters.

"Furthermore, the arbitrary arrests, detention, and torture of prisoners that has been reported must end now, and the free flow of information must be permitted so that there can be independent verification of events."

Here's an Unlike.ly Tale: Gadhafi Does Swimming.ly on the Internet

Libya's Widely Used Web Suffix Makes a Long Story Short for Obama, Others

By JESS BRAVIN

Where have the United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the U.S. Air Force directed Twitter followers to learn more about military action in Libya? To an Internet domain controlled by the regime of Col. Moammar Gadhafi.

They aren't the only ones to send their Internet followers through Libya. So have House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio), Stanford University, Charlie Sheen, the White House, Kim Kardashian, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Paul McCartney, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and thousands of others.

...

As a result, the .ly domain has proved attractive to English-language businesses looking for catchy online names—including bit.ly, Ow.ly and other popular utilities that compress lengthy Internet addresses, making them easier to email, link or fit the tight space on networks like Twitter. These helpful, simple—and free—services have become ubiquitous.

The .ly domain is controlled by Libya's General Post and Telecommunications Co., whose chairman, Mohammed el-Gadhafi, is the dictator's eldest son. It says it has rented out more than 10,000 .ly domains, either directly or through resellers.

LIBYA: Eman al-Obeidy tells in TV interview of being raped, beaten by Kadafi men

April 8, 2011 | 9:09am

The horrying story of Eman al-Obeidy, a Libyan woman who says she was raped by Moammar Kadafi's militiamen, gripped the world and made the law school graduate the face of the movement against Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi.

Two weeks after Al-Obeidy burst into a Tripoli hotel to try to tell journalists that she was gang raped by Libyan leader Kadafi's militiamen, she's been speaking out about her harrowing ordeal and criticized the Libyan authorities in an interview with CNN aired on the network earlier this week.

During the interview, which was faciliated by Kadafi's son Saadi and held at his office in Tripoli, she recounted her abduction and talked about how she was brought to the house of a Kadafi soldier where drunk soldiers were roaming around. There, they beat, raped and tortured her, she says.

"I was brutally tortured to the point of them entering weapons inside me. They would also pour alcohol in my eyes," she told CNN.

African Union leaders to visit Libya to demand ceasefire

First Posted 09:13:00 04/09/2011

JOHANNESBURG—A group of African leaders will visit Libya this weekend and meet with both sides in the country's deepening conflict to demand an immediate ceasefire, the South African foreign ministry said Friday.

South African President Jacob Zuma and other leaders from a high-level African Union panel will first meet in Mauritania on Saturday, then travel to Libya to meet with leader Moammar Gadhafi in Tripoli and rebel leaders in Benghazi to seek an end to the conflict.

"The committee has been granted permission by NATO to enter Libya and to meet in Tripoli with the Libyan leader. The AU delegation will also meet with the Interim Transitional National Council in Benghazi on 10 and 11 April 2011," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Key on the agenda of both meetings will be the immediate implementation of a ceasefire from both sides and the opening of a political dialogue between the two parties."

FBI questioning Libyan visitors to Chicago

Friday, April 08, 2011

Chuck Goudie

April 8, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) --

...

This is part of a nationwide effort to locate and speak with hundreds of Libyan students, business travelers and tourists who may have connections to the Gadhafi government, or be Gadhafi sympathizers and potential security threats.

Interviews are now under way in 10 U.S. cities. The I-Team has learned that over the past two days, in Chicago, FBI agents have started questioning about 100 Libyan visitors.

...

FBI spokesman Rice said that agents in Chicago, Detroit and eight other major field offices are approaching a total of 800 Libyan nationals with scripted, non-aggressive questions.

...

"The focus of the contact is twofold; first, to determine if there is a possible threat to the U.S., or the country's allies, as a result of the military actions that are ongoing in Libya; second, to determine if there might be any actionable intelligence to gather from the visitors."

...

The I-Team spoke Friday afternoon with one young man from Libya who is attending a Chicago university. He was visited by the FBI Thursday and had no problem with it, but he begged not to be identified, even though he was quoted by name in previous news stories critical of Gadhafi. The student says if Libyan leaders learn that he talked to the FBI his family will be killed.

UN panel: 100s of mercenaries operating in Libya

By FRANK JORDANS, Associated Press

Friday, April 8, 2011

(04-08) 10:14 PDT GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) --

A U.N. panel says several hundred foreign fighters are likely operating for both Moammar Gadhafi's regime and the rebels in Libya, and many may be involved in serious human rights violations.

The head of a United Nations working group on the use of mercenaries said Friday that many of the fighters are likely independent fighters from other African countries, but some are believed to come from Belarus.

"We examined several sources of information that indicate Gadhafi has used mercenaries and is using mercenaries against the population of Libya," said Jose Luis Gomez del Prado.

"There was some information that there were snipers that were contracted at least by Col. Gadhafi and possibly also by the opposition," he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, — were thought to be in Libya.

The panel issued a statement Friday saying it was "especially concerned about the reported involvement of mercenaries in serious human rights violations" in countries such as Libya and Ivory Coast.

Cold War neutrals now taking sides, timidly

(AP) – 1 hour ago

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish fighter jets are roaring into action over Libya under NATO command. Ireland is offering itself as a transit hub for U.S. military deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Even famously independent Switzerland has peacekeepers in Kosovo.

For Europe's once-staunchly neutral countries, much has changed in the two decades since the Cold War ended. With no East-West conflict as a reference point, the concept of neutrality has been redefined to the point that some would say it's lost its meaning.

"There's total confusion. People have forgotten the concept of neutrality, which means don't take sides in a military conflict," said Swiss peace researcher Daniele Ganser.

...

Switzerland finally joined the United Nations in 2002 and since 1999 has about 200 peacekeepers in Kosovo. It recently allowed allied forces to drive through and fly over Switzerland on their way to missions in Libya. The government said Swiss neutrality was intact because the Libya operation was authorized by the U.N. Security Council.

Bombardment blunts Libyan rebel advance

(AP) – 18 minutes ago

AJDABIYA, Libya (AP) — Government forces shelled the rebels' main front-line outpost of Libya's rebels Saturday, forcing fighters to pull back and open fire with their own heavy weapons to try to hold the town.

...

Most rebel forces pulled back to Ajdabiya when the shelling began, but later appeared to attempt a counteroffensive with heavy machine guns and rockets. Black smoke rose from parts of the town.

Earlier, rebels had pushed deeper toward Brega, a key prize in the back-and-forth battles with government forces.

Rebels say they took two prisoners after a clash with soldiers near Brega's Bright Star University, outside the government-controlled oil facilities, but it marks a noticeable advance by rebels struggling to push back Gadhafi's forces.

From The Guardian's news blogs:

Rising tensions in Egypt between the military and protesters in Tahrir Square are reflected in this tweet from Mosa'ab Elshamy, an Egyptian student and photographer:

The notorious "Army and people, hand in hand" chant has been replaced with "People and people, hand in hand". Sad, to say the least. #Tahrir

45. Freelance journalist Matthew VanDyke missing in Libya for nearly one month

Committee to Protect Journalists

Journalist missing in Libya; 1 killed in Iraq

Matthew VanDyke (Courtesy Sharon VanDyke)

New York, April 8, 2011--The Committee to Protect Journalists is concerned about the fate of American freelance journalist Matthew VanDyke, at left, who has been missing in Libya since mid-March, according to his family and news reports. He is among 15 reporters either missing or in government custody in Libya.

VanDyke arrived in Libya on March 6 via the country's eastern land border with Egypt, and has not spoken to his family since March 12, his mother Sharon VanDyke told CPJ. On March 13, she received a GPS tracking email from him; the coordinates correspond roughly to the location of the Libyan city of Brega. VanDyke has not been heard from since. On April 4, Nouri Fonas, a Libyan friend of VanDyke's contacted his mother and informed her that Matthew was believed to have been captured along with three Libyan friends on March 13 or 14 near Brega by forces loyal to leader Muammar Qaddafi, the mother told CPJ. They were later transported, along with more than 1,000 Libyan civilians to Surt, a Qaddafi stronghold, according to Fonas.

On Thursday, pro-Qaddafi forces detained photographers Manuel Varela, Anton Hammerl, James Foley, and reporter Clare Morgana Gillis on the outskirts of the city of Brega. The Global Post, for which Foley was reporting, confirmed to CPJ late on Thursday that all four journalists were in government custody.

At least six local journalists who spoke critically of government policies are unaccounted for amid wide speculation that they are in the custody of Qaddafi forces. On March 28, Libyan security forces detained Rana al-Akbani, a reporter for the arts and culture section of the Libyan daily Al-Shams, a friend of hers told CPJ on the condition of anonymity. Libyan authorities are also holding Al-Jazeera journalists Ahmed Vall Ould Addin, Kamel Atalua, and Ammar al-Hamdan.

Libya: RAF Tornados destroy seven Libyan tanks

RAF Tornados have destroyed seven tanks in Libya as air strikes there continue, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

The jets hit two tanks in Ajdabiyah and five in Misratah on Friday - areas which have seen fighting between rebels and Col Muammar Gaddafi's troops.

RAF Typhoons have also been involved in policing the UN-backed no-fly zone.

47. Why are we still doing this despite evidence from Defence Intel, DNI etc

How can we continue to support bombing when all the fact now show that the "rebels' represent
a minority insurgency without enough popular support to take over.

Both Defence intel and the Director of National Intelligence testified that there was not
sufficient credible data to support intervention -- before State decided to move for the No-Fly-Zone
excuse for bombing anyway.

The president of the Council on Foreign Relations who formerly advised General Coin Powell at the State Department under Bush and publicly resigned in protest over Bush lies, has now testified before the Senate that the same kind of FALSE PRETEXTS have being constructed for the Libya Intervention.

Yet we still continue to participate in the SCAM THAT IS KILLING people every day.
DOESN'T TRUTH MATTER TO PROGRESSIVES ANYMORE? THIS IS TRAGIC.

Libya rebels push back as powers eye truce

April 9, 2011 - 10:59PM

AFP

Libyan rebels have pushed back from around the oil refinery town of Brega under heavy fire from Muammar Gaddafi's troops, as diplomatic efforts gathered pace for a truce.

Dozens of cars and military vehicles were seen pouring east out of Ajdabiya towards the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, as a helicopter bearing a rebel flag flew in the opposite direction towards the front line despite a no-fly zone.

...

In a sign of the rebels' growing confidence in their ability to combat government forces, they had even allowed foreign journalists to advance halfway to Brega to a point where they established a supply base behind their short-lived front lines, the first time they had done so since Wednesday.

...

Rebel fighters launched a salvo of rockets from Ajdabiya's eastern outskirts as dozens of cars and military vehicles poured out of the town heading east towards Benghazi.

A military helicopter with the rebel flag painted on its side later flew very low towards the front line around Ajdabiya despite a United Nations-imposed no-fly zone, an AFP correspondent reported.

...

<AJ correspondent> Hoda Abdel-Hamid who had to turn back about 20 kilometres from Ajdabiya because of the shelling said the town was being pounded from the north, south and west.

"Reliable military sources told us that Gaddafi's forces managed to advance overnight from the southern desert and started shelling from that area.

"We are also told that there is street fighting going on inside Ajdabiya between rebels and Gaddafi loyalists. This is a very serious development because there is now fighting on two fronts – around Ajdabiya and around Brega."

...

The Associated Press, however, reported that after the pullback, some rebel forces attempted to launch a counteroffensive with heavy machine guns and rockets.

53. Gov't. attack on Ajdabiyah appears to be "more of a raid than a serious attempt to recapture it"
A move by pro-Gaddafi forces into the rebel-held town of Ajdabiya today appears to have been more of a raid than a serious attempt to recapture it.

That's according to the BBC's John Lane, who has just been speaking to the BBC news channel from the eastern city of Benghazi.

Nevertheless, he said that the raid by the pro-Gaddafi force, who came by surprise from positions in the desert, would be regarded as a setback for the rebels.

Coalition aircraft appear to have made no attempt to attack the raiders.

76. Migrants forced to fight for Gaddafi
Among the reports of atrocities occurring in Libya are claims from African migrants that they were abducted and forced to fight with Gaddafi's forces.

Nearly all migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, who arrive at the desert refugee camp in Tunisia, have fled in fear of violent reprisals by Libyans who accuse them of being mercenaries. The extent to which Gaddafi's military has used foreign mercenaries, or press-ganged migrants into fighting, remains unclear.

A former Nigerian police officer, who had worked in Libya for eight years as a technician, alleges he was abducted in mid-March at a military checkpoint in Tripoli, along with other men from Ghana, Mali and Niger, before being taken to a military centre.

60. The Guardian's summary of events today:

• Soldiers beat hundreds of protesters with clubs and fired into the air in a pre-dawn raid that wounded 15 people on Saturday to disperse an overnight demonstration in Cairo's central Tahrir Square.

The troops eventually withdrew, enabling demonstrators to reoccupy the square and block the streets leading into it. Armed with sticks and other makeshift weapons, they vowed not to leave until the defence minister, the titular head of state, has resigned.

A force of around 300 soldiers swept into the square around 3am. and waded into a tent camp in the centre where protesters had formed a human cordon to protect several army officers who had joined their demonstration in defiance of their superiors.

Yemen has recalled its ambassador from Qatar for consultation after Qatar's prime minister said Gulf states had a plan for embattled Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

Protests in Yemen descended into violence on Friday, with at least five people killed and dozens wounded as Saleh rejected the plan to secure an end to his 32 years in power.

Saleh told tens of thousands of supporters in the capital: "We don't get our legitimacy from Qatar or from anyone else ... we reject this belligerent intervention."

• There has been a breakthrough in humanitarian efforts to relieve the besieged Libyan town of Misrata after a ship carrying medical supplies docked there, while the Red Cross said it was sending aid workers to Zawiya, west of Tripoli.

The Red Cross began negotiations with Libyan government officials a week ago on access to western areas under its control. The organisation is already deployed in rebel-held eastern territory, mainly in the cities of Benghazi and Tobruk.

Rebel fighters say they have meanwhile pushed deeper toward the oil port of Brega, a key prize in the back-and-forth battles with government forces.

Syrian anti-government activists have called for daily protests against the regime after at least 32 people were killed in the bloodiest day of demonstrations in the country's three-week uprising. Most of the dead were reported in the restive southern city of Deraa, where burials are planned for today.

Rights activists and witnesses said security forces opened fire on Friday on tens of thousands of protesters in Deraa, killing 25 people and wounding hundreds.

WSJ: Are leaders succeeding in bringing change in places like Libya and Egypt?
Archbishop Tutu: It's a fantastic thing. One salutes especially the young people that they were ready to put their lives on the line. They knew these people they were demonstrating against weren't likely to step down easily. They knew that these people were likely to use force and it didn't stop them. It didn't stop them in Libya, where Gadhafi amazingly is bombing his own people. I think there does come a point where people see it's better to die free than to live on their knees.

Libyan rebels face military surge on key outpost

By SEBASTIAN ABBOT Associated Press

April 9, 2011, 1:18PM

AJDABIYA, Libya — Government soldiers and rebel gunmen battled in the streets of a key front-line city Saturday after the Libyan military used shelling and guerrilla-style tactics to open its most serious push into opposition territory since international airstrikes began. At least eight people were killed, a hospital official said.

...

The battle for Ajdabiya showed how Gadhafi's forces are adapting their strategies amid NATO airstrikes seeking to cripple the Libyan military.

Small and mobile units — less vulnerable to airstrikes than tanks and other armor — first ambushed a rebel convoy probing the lines outside the city. Government gunners then began shelling Ajdabiya from desert positions and later ferried soldiers into the streets using civilian vehicles in attempts to foil NATO pilots.

A possible NATO airstrike, kicking up a huge mushroom cloud, temporarily halted the shelling. NATO officials did not immediately confirm the attack.

...

By nightfall, heavy gunfire was heard from apparent block-to-block combat inside the city, which had about 150,000 residents before many fled for safer areas.

71. Operation Unified Protector explained (Day 21)
1) Two Italian Air Force C-130Js (operating under UN flag) flew on Apr. 8 from Brindisi to Benghazi – Benina, to carry 15 tons of aids and to embark 25 wounded Libyans from Misratah. Later on the same day, according to the Associated Press news agency, the European Union would be ready to put the boots on ground and launch “a humanitarian mission” in Libya’s Misurata within several days, but only if it has United Nations backing.

Anyway, the Italian mission to Benina should mean the airport is still in the hands of the rebels.

2) Nothing really new from public channels when the weekend comes. Even the French, which have been extremely talkative, did not publish any further update since Thursday. Dealing with the Norwegians, total mission count as of Apr. 7 is 42 (28 under NATO command), and the classic “ground targets engaged also last 24 hours” statement.

Aksel Magdahl, a Norwegian reader who’s sending me daily updates on the RNoAF contribution to Unified Protector explained that the spokesperson for Norwegian Armed Forces Operational Headquarters said that the Norwegian F-16’s were not involved in the two bombings of rebels “We hit what we were supposed to hit” he said… http://www.nrk.no/nyheter/distrikt/nordland/1.7585905

NATO says destroys 17 Libyan tanks at Misrata, Brega
Sat Apr 9, 2011 8:12pm GMT

BRUSSELS, April 9 (Reuters) - NATO forces destroyed 17 tanks belonging to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces on Friday and early Saturday, a NATO official said on Saturday.

NATO aircraft hit 15 tanks near the western city of Misrata, where Gaddafi's forces are attacking rebels, and two south of Brega in the east of the country, he said. "Friday's operations could prove to have had the highest tempo (since NATO took command of military operations in Libya)," the official said.

The official also said NATO aircraft intercepted a MIG 23 aircraft near Benghazi on Saturday, flown by a rebel pilot, and advised him to land. "We don't know the identity of the pilot but given that he took off from Benghazi, we would presume it was an opposition pilot," he said.

UPDATE 3-Libyan rebels suffer losses in Misrata
Sat Apr 9, 2011 7:13pm GMT
By Maria Golovnina

MISRATA, Libya, April 9 (Reuters) - Libyan rebels said at least eight of their fighters were killed repelling a government attack on Misrata on Saturday, but were buoyed by a series of NATO air strikes on government positions.

The last rebel bastion in western Libya, Gaddafi's forces appear bent on seizing Misrata and crucially its port, which some analysts say the veteran leader needs to control if he is to survive a prolonged conflict.

For a second straight day, government forces pounded the eastern side of Misrata with heavy artillery, a rebel who identified himself as Mustafa Abdulrahman told Reuters, with the fighting centred on the Nakl al-Theqeel road to the port.

.............

"I have to say that the NATO forces have changed since yesterday, we are sensing a positive change. They have bombed at least four sites held by Gaddafi's forces in Misrata," Abdulrahman told Reuters by telephone.

77. Special Forces scandal as officers are held 'for trying to leak secrets
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 04:59 PM by tabatha
Two senior Special Forces officers suspected of leaking details of highly sensitive covert operations have been arrested under the Official Secrets Act, the Daily Mail can reveal.

The unprecedented arrests came as members of the SAS and SBS were deployed in Libya in preparation for airstrikes and to liaise with rebels and identify stranded British oil workers for rescue.

The arrests on March 2 took place two days before an MI6 officer and several members of the SAS were held by rebel forces near the centre of anti-Gaddafi operations in the eastern port city of Benghazi.

The humiliating detention, after they had been flown in by a Chinook helicopter under the cover of darkness in an operation sanctioned by Foreign Secretary William Hague, was a huge embarrassment for Britain and the SAS. The arrested officers were held for 24 hours as detectives and specialists from Scotland Yard’s SO15 Counter Terrorism Command carried out searches.

79. In Libya, an Odd-Couple Alliance
WASHINGTON — At home in France, he has long been called “Sarko l’Américain.” But it took an American president and the threat of a massacre in Libya to give President Nicolas Sarkozy the chance to channel his inner American. With his call for military action against Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, his recognition of the rebels and his readiness to arm them, Mr. Sarkozy has looked every inch the swaggering world leader, less a latter-day Charles de Gaulle than a Gallic Ronald Reagan.

For President Obama, too, Mr. Sarkozy has been an enabler, but of a different sort. By thrusting France so far out front, he has allowed Mr. Obama to claim credibly that Libya is now a model of multilateral cooperation, not merely the third Muslim country the United States has gone to war with in the last decade. Pulled reluctantly into the conflict by the urgent pleas of European and Arab leaders — none of the pleas more urgent than Mr. Sarkozy’s — Mr. Obama has managed to sound almost European.

It is an unlikely geopolitical Alphonse-and-Gaston routine, featuring two men who are outriders in their own political landscapes and who have each taken a risk by going against the conventional wisdom in Paris and Washington. But the routine also has broader implications because it augurs a world in which the United States, militarily stretched and fiscally depleted, can no longer afford to play global policeman alone.

“It would be tempting to say Sarkozy the American is encountering Obama the European, but it would be wrong,” said Dominique Moïsi, the founder of the French Institute for International Relations, who helped popularize the nickname “Sarko l’Américain.” For these two very different leaders, “this is a marriage of convenience.”
