1. I really think it depends on where you live because
my home is worth about 250,000 where I am, but move it to LA and its easily a million dollar home.

13. another referent point supporting your view... I answered based on a midwestern
city - and came to one calculation. More than a decade ago I lived in the San Francisco Bay area - and I would have to apply a drastically different calculation. I own a modest home here, there is no way I could do anything but rent (and pay far more) there.

8. Where I live 250k puts one at worst in upper middle class,
leading a very comfortable life.

Obviously this depends where one lives and their family size.

6. It really depends on where someone lives.
So I can't answer your poll since what we earn as a family unit as barely middle class on the East Coast would look more like 'comfortably middle class' in other areas of the country.

7. The median household income in 2009 was $49, 777
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Median_household_income

Half of the households make less than that, half make more

9. I was tempted to go with >= $80,000
But that is simply too high compared to reality - That would be considerably greater than most families enjoy ...

>= $60,000 ....

10. Truly middle class? Private school, country club, vacation middle class? Almost extinct.
Most people don't really understand what middle class means anymore and even fewer are in it.
