30. preconceived perceptions
republicans are tough, democrats are weak, those are ingrained, lock solid into our psyche.

So Boehner crying is anything but weak, while a democrat doing something similar is weak.

93. And to think "the Scream" basically ruined Howard Dean's run
The media couldn't get over the Howard Dean "scream" and I really think that's what sank his campaign... of course, it didn't matter that he was trying to be heard over a shouting cheering crowd (that you couldn't hear through his isolated directional microphone) or that he'd been campaigning and speaking for months, so it's only natural for his voice to crack.

No, they made it out to be that he was some sort of maniac, too dangerous to be president.

Yeah, with Muskie's crying, the Nixon camp managed to spin it into some full-fledged mental illness. The same with Eagleton.

Shouldn't Boehner's constant weeping and frequent drunk appearances somehow count against him? No, they make him seem "more genuine."

Give me a giant fucking break.

Everything sticks to the left, nothing sticks to the right. And the right claims there's a liberal bias in the media.

He out and out said that whatever he says while campaigning is merely nonsense designed to get votes, that what he really stands for is something else entirely. Too bad Stahl didn't pursue him on that!

40. There was a pre-show of sorts and a female reporter really wanted
to know how she felt about his crying. That was when she made the statement about really, really, liking him and she felt he was authentic. I didn't see the actual interview but my guess would be he sort of shocked her and she was put off by it. Her statement was a "clean up" for airing...

with the Constitution on the steps of the Capitol Bldg. Read a passage from the 'constitution' very dramatically, pounding fist on podium, probably as instructed. Only problem was, it wasn't the Constitution, it was the Declaration of Independence. There should a test for these idiots running for Congress. They swear to defend and protect the Constitution and they don't even know what it is.

26. Who, with adequate credentials, can answer this??
I asked this on a similar thread but want to cast my net wide. I really wanna know.

My own notion is that Boehner's emotional reactions are stemming either from some physical disorder (endocrine, whatever) or from something in the Physician's Desk Reference (the compendium of all psychiatric disorders). Perhaps I am wrong. But something is needed to explain it, I think.

Are there any health care professionals out there who could weigh in with ideas?

60. Yep. That is the phrase...
I know "emotional lability" is the phrase I wanted to use, but it would not come to mind. Yet, it is both a medical and psychiatric sign, often noted and factored into diagnoses.

Went to Google with the term and found this.

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/emotional_lability/causes.htm

As far as I can tell, 59 reasons to be concerned.

67. It can be a symptom of a variety of disorders. Severe forms are often from damage to the inhibition
center in the brain. We see it often in stroke victims but anything that damages that structure in the brain can cause it.

BTW, I think you were looking for the DSM (Diagnostic & Statistical Manual) rather than the PDR which is a book of all the drugs on the market.

90. Excellent! Good Answer.
Yes, it was the DSM I meant. And when I wrote PDR, it was actually the Merck Manual I was thinking of.

These acronyms confuse my old brain. I mean, WTF, is this a GOP conspiracy? I was asked the other day for names for twins and found myself suggesting FINRA and ERISA.

Seriously, though, great answer. Since I knew no past history to account for it (except maybe drinking too much?) my best guess was a head shot during an MVA.

Thanks again.

Wouldn't surprise me if our brain-surgeon voters send possibly the greatest progressive voice in the Senate next to Bernie Sanders (Sherrod Brown) packing soon. Yeah, he only wrote a book on the myths of "Free Trade" and cares about your rights as a worker. But hey, let's elect a fascist for a governor and Bush's former trade advisor for the Senate! Because since this state's economy sucks ass, what's gonna fix it is . . . putting . . . the people who helped create this mess . . . back in power.

Aces, idiots. Unfuckingbelievable.

75. There may be a vacancy in the White House soon...
"Wouldn't surprise me if our brain-surgeon voters send possibly the greatest progressive voice in the Senate next to Bernie Sanders (Sherrod Brown) packing soon."

Why not send him to the White House then? He would certainly be an improvement over who's there now.

83. Brown would be an improvement. He'd also disappoint and it wouldn't be his fault.
The problem; the disease, if you will, that America has is unbridled capitalism, the wealthy that benefit the most from it and the Republicans in both parties that gatekeep it. America has to be willing . . . and I mean REALLLY WILLING to first see that those are huge problems and cure them first before we can make any effort to get great politicians who work for the people in there. We need far more Sherrod Browns in Congress and the Senate also.

Everyone wonders why Bewsh II got everything he wanted . . . could it be because many Democrats are really what used to be called "normal Republicans", and all Republicans are batshit insane, non-caring bastards?

91. I agree
The right leadership, though, can go a long ways to shifting the whole debate, to educating the public as to what direction we should go, to make the case for policies that will actually help. We don't even have that now. Obama lets the whole corporate-center-right point of view completely determine the terms of discussion. Example: in one or two candid moments, he off-handedly acknowledged that single payer health insurance is really the best way to control costs, but he never ever made any educational arguments in its favor, he never helped explain to the American people what real reform would look like.

I can live with disappointment, change won't be easy. I can't live with phony bait-and-switch politicians. Someone like Brown (or Sanders, Franken, Grayson, Feingold, Dean) would at least get the right conversations going, so we could honestly look at our problems. If we don't have the votes to get something done, we would at least have made the case for why we need more and better votes, by making the right arguments, and we would then have a platform from which to try to get the right people elected in the next elections so that we have the votes... What we have now is the public shrugging and saying Dems are no better than Repubs! Sorry I ramble, anyway we SO need a legitimate challenge to this administration.

61. I watch 60 Minutes on Youtube now rather than record it.
DVR is very clogged, got finals this week. I'll most likely not watch this Boehner interview.

However, 60 Minutes recently did a profile of Justice John Paul Stevens. And an Anderson Cooper assignment report on corruption in the Afghan police force.

But his schmuckiness came shining through just the same.

66. Can you imagine the uproar if Nancy Pelosi cried like that?
What a big baby. He cries because his wife says she's proud of him?? What the hell?

Yeah, there's definitely something a little "off" about him.

70. I always watch "60 Minutes"
Sometimes I'm amused, sometimes I'm edjimacated, sometimes I'm enraged. Tonight I was just -- WTF??

I am simply not comfortable with a guy who is so psychologically labile, and is 3rd in line for the Presidency. Someone in that position should have a better grasp on his emotions than to be falling apart at the thought that a kid in the 3rd grade may not have then same opportunities that HE had when HE was growing up. I'm sorry, I'm an emotional person myself, I sob when I see SPCA ads with sad puppies and kitties on TV, and the commercials with skinny kids overseas also (and I rush to donate to most of those as well) -- BUT. . . the Speaker of the House, I think, could have a little more self-possession.
