Bernie Sanders just posted to FaceBook
"A last-minute deal was reached near midnight on Friday for $38.5 billion in spending cuts. Another stopgap spending measure will keep the government running until next week when Congress is to vote on the budget agreement. It makes steep cuts in programs for working families, such as Head Start for children and Pell grants for college students."

So working families, Head Start and pell grants got cut. Tell me again HOW this is supposed to help the middle class and poor? Averted a shutdown on the backs of the middle class -- AGAIN.

What are they going to give up NEXT week? Is there anything else that is still left?

"Change We Can Believe In." REALLY?

I know as a 3rd gen dem, I am "changed" today. Indeed it is obama that is responsible for this "change".
Today, I consider myself a person without a party affiliation, after 40+ Years of Democratic party loyalty; my parents and grandparents strong commitment to Dem Party values, I am done. I am so deeply Ashamed of my party today.

There is no difference between Dem's and pubs.

If we had more "identified democrats" working toward the future as progressively as these honorable women do, we wouldn't have need for this conversation.

I am very politically active, so I Am working to change that which I do not like.

I come from a long, long line of Democrats - going back to my great-grandparents, if not beyond, and I don't recognize this lame party that is more concerned with building consensus (caving in to repukes) than standing and fighting for the middle class. I too am ashamed of this Dem-lite mentality. The sprint to the right is disgusting and abhorrent. I am from the left wing of the Democratic party and will remain so for the rest of my life. I am proud of the time honored issues that the Dems once stood for and will never bend or yield to lesser values.

BTW - Welcome to DU, thank your for being a real Dem, and prepare yourself for the onslaught that is sure to come your way.

Nothing has been cut yet, they just agreed on a number. Now they have to figure out where the $38b should come from and theres a chance if Obama plays hardball, they would all come from the war department. Also if the tax cuts for the rich didn't make you mad enough, maybe were never a democrat as you stated.

I don't think he's a hardball player. He's a consensus player, which is dangerous when the Republicans will not compromise. Obama's policies & procedures manual is missing the chapters on leadership & backbone. Too bad LBJ didn't leave his manual with margin notes behind for Obama to pick up some useful pointers.

In addition, money will not be taken from programs the president favors, such as Head Start, but instead from the automatic "mandatory spending" appropriated for departments such as the Pentagon and the Department of Transportation.

66. FYI: that didn't come from Bernie, that was added in the OP. Here's Bernie's
whole FB post:
Bernie Sanders

A last-minute deal was reached near midnight on Friday for $38.5 billion in spending cuts. Another stopgap spending measure will keep the government running until next week when Congress is to vote on the budget agreement. It makes steep cuts in programs for working families, such as Head Start for children and Pell grants for college students.

Obama has certainly been no friend to the middle class and poor. He's capitulated every step of the way to the right-wing and his corporate overlords and he has screwed America and 98% of Americans in the process.

at least long term. In the next election every voter should hear that Republicans cut $5 billion from Head Start and that they also voted to give $10 billion in tax cuts to the 400 richest Americans. (except using real numbers). Given a choice between educating children or givig money to multi-millionaires, most voters are gonna side with the children.

means I might not be able to complete the degree I've been fighting for so many years to complete. I work full time and raise a child. I cannot afford to take off to finish college so I take courses part time.

155. Even 5% of the vote would make the corporate Democrats sit up and take notice,
but it could easily be at least 15% if not more. Bernie is one of the very few who represents the REAL interests of the majority of the American people. The only thing that really keeps him from winning the presidency in 2012 is all the "pragmatic" people like you who keep telling everyone else it's impossible--and everyone who believes them. But *WHAT IF* all the Democrats now planning to hold their noses and vote for Obama again voted their conscience instead?

So NO...I will NOT "Stop this Sanders for president crap"!

“Am I the only one who finds this "puff piece"
http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2011/04/09/details-bipartisan-budget-deal

a little too general?
I want to see an itemized list of how much is being cut from which programs and agencies. If the White House is going to crow about it, they ought to do a better job of letting people know about it. Or is there something buried way down deep in it that's going to end up killing people, like the cuts for heating oil money for poor folks in the middle of a New England or Montana winter?
I've heard a lot of numbers being sliced up and tossed around by the talking heads, but I think that people deserve to know who gave up what in this mess, and I'll bet I'm not alone.

If the White House and the President are so "proud" of what they have "accomplished" let them lay it out in plain English, for everyone to see.”
