How is the world going to react to the 2012 end times prophecy?
Edited on Sat Apr-09-11 09:57 PM by Renew Deal
I watched a "Apocalypse 2012" show on CNBC. It's about all the stuff people are doing to get "ready." It showed all kinds of "survivalist" bullshit that's going on like underground bunkers and plans for suicide. One guy has weapons attached to his bunker to keep people out. Another guy plans on jumping off a cliff at the exact time of the solstice so he gets sucked up into some cosmic hole.

I wonder how many people are going to kill themselves before 12/21/2012. I congratulate those that are making money on 2012. Ripping off suckers can be profitable.

Here's some links:

1. Sounds like we will have some Darwin Awards in the making.
It's really scary. I hope no one actually kills themselves, but there are some pretty crazy people out there.

2. Probably the same way they acted the last time the world was supposed to end
in 2000 because of Y2K, people will get worked up about it until the time comes then they will get made fun of by their families for the rest of their lives.

And although it could have wreaked havoc, it really wasn't going to destroy the world.

But that was a fixable and refutable concern.

4. there will be a few crackpots, but as it gets closer more and more people
will realize how very unlikely this is.

It is easy to accept the possibility when it is far off, but as it gets close reality sinks in.

9. Not the same thing
Y2K was a manmade problem of poorly programmed computers. The world was never really in danger besides maybe the lights going out. 2012 is based on faith, and that's far more powerful.

Their were wrong then and yet they survived. When 2012 comes and goes they'll just figure out a new date to obsess on.

21. Not really
There was the fabricated threat of nuclear death, but the entire thing seemed controllable. The planet wasn't going flip poles or spin in reverse because of a computer bug.

22. Y2K was a computer programming issue.
Most computer programming issues are fixable. 2012 believers think the world will spin in reverse, or the poles will flip, or some cosmic hole is going to open, or another planet will crash into the earth. It's completely based on faith, and when I say faith I don't mean religion.

I see what you're saying, completely, but there really was-at least to me- a concerted effort to freak people out. I think what's going on now is exactly the same, though I agree the situations are slightly different.

31. I think my aunt is going to this.
She said something about a conference in Branson during that time period in July. She's been planning on the Rapture for a couple of years now, which is why her credit card spending is out of control. She figures she won't be around to worry about it.

It's really going to suck for her when she's not Raptured and the bill collectors start calling.

Most of the Rapture cults aren't paying any attention to it. They'll probably be the first to denigrate the failed 'prophet'.

27. From a 'prophecy' point of view, I expect 2012 to be a bust - that is to be expected
Before the end there is supposed to be a falling away. This won't happen until Christians (et al) are broken. In order for that to happen they have to lose hope. 2000, 2007, 2012, etc have to come and go without anything happening.

Folks will fall away, faith will be lost, and then - and only then, will the end times come.

Preachers tend not to talk about that part of the end times...wonder why :)

29. So what killed the dinosaurs again? The many ice ages?
Yep the world will stay as we know it now forever! There are cycles within cycles. More than the earth, sun and moon cycles. It is far better to be prepared and nothing happen than be unprepared and something happen. Do I think for sure something is going to happen, no. Do you know for sure it's not, no. Will it be the end of the world, no that is naysayers nonsense. For those I have only one thing to say "keep thinking two dimensionally “. Remember this, those that are prepared if something does happen won't be laughing at you, they will have another emotion. Oh and remember radiation is good for you.

34. I don't know if there's anything to this 2012 business, but
Living in the shadow of

a 9.0 mega-earthquake and hundreds of aftershocks,
a monster tsunami that ravaged hundreds of miles of coastline, and
a nuclear disaster that never ends,

all happening just a few months away from the official start of 2012,

I am not going to scoff at people who think that 2012 is going to be a BAD year.

36. There seem to be plenty of people here on DU
who warn of the impending total meltdown of society, and how we'd all better be prepared to grow all of our own food and the currency will be totally worthless so we'd better have things to barter or good basic skills (like being a veterinarian perhaps) because all of civilization as we know it is just about to end. The only difference is that these people don't give a specific date for the end of everything as we know it.

Personally, I tend to treat those who are convinced things will end any time soon with contempt and scorn, which probably isn't very nice, but I've been listening to predictions of the End of Everything As We Know It for about fifty years now (yeah, I'm that old) and so I just have no patience any more with such nonsense.

40. In my 67 years, I've lived through a lot of "end times prophecies."
Certainly, one day, one of them will be right. I doubt that this is The One.
In the meantime, I'll just keep on enjoying life as best I can. After all, any of us could have our own personal time ended tomorrow - heck, even in the next five minutes.
If the people described in these links are the only survivors of an "end times," then I sincerely hope that I will not be. I very much doubt that I will ever be among any of the "Raptured," however.
And that's just fine with me.
