Will someone from DU step up and primary Mr. Obama? WILL someone? |
|
There are a few on DU who could supply a real Liberal voice. The country needs someone to step up and question the madness. I am fairly poor, but I would contribute quite a bit to help someone make these points. Who will step up and tackle this tough task? Who would support a DUer so that she or he could make some constructive news?

28. What makes you think Obama will be fine? |
|
The states that put him over in 2008 -- like Ohio and other swing states -- went absolutely, madly red last November. What do you think has changed since then?
Certainly the continuation of the tax cuts for the rich, the lack of indictments of the Wall Street fraudsters and the resulting budget cuts to programs that help the middle class and poor are not going to get Democrats out to the polls in 2012.
I'm not hearing positive talk about Obama from my friends and neighbors. People generally seem to be disappointed.
Obama has to have a lot of enthusiasm to put him across in the swing states. It just isn't there.
We need a challenger.

There simply is no alternative position in American politics any longer. Dems and republicans present differing flavors of the same corporate message. They both serve the same greedy interests-- they just take different approaches to it. Anyone coming from that direction to primary Obama would probably be an utter waste of time, and would merely split the democratic vote and insure a republican victory-- something that would serve very nearly the same interests as an Obama victory.
The real problem is that the democrats have no alternative messages. They are not a stark contrast to the republicans. They do not balance republican ideals with a completely different set of objectives, at least not in the public discourse.
I too would LOVE to see Obama primaried, but only by someone who offered real alternative visions for America's future-- someone who proposed something completely different than the single direction that both parties presently advocate. At present, the democratic party not only lacks such a person, it utterly lacks any alternative philosophy for them to fight for.
THAT'S the big problem with primarying Obama, IMO. It would only produce another disappointment. We need to build an alternative vision first-- then someone with real leadership qualities can step up and OWN that message. I fear though, that it will take another generation to accomplish, just like it took the republicans a generation to rebuild their political machine, and I doubt that we have that long.

10. It's not my intent to start a controversy |
|
but I've got to ask those of you who express dissatisfaction with the current president, and want someone else, a question; when in the history of the United States has the party that held the office turned out the incumbent and run another candidate? I believe the answer would be zero. Like him or not, agree with him or not, if you are a Democrat or any other political persuasion that is NOT Republican why would you want to replace him? That is political suicide. Change in our country won't come from Washington DC. It will have to come at the local then state level before anything changes federally.

12. I think a primary challenge is phenomenally stupid for the reasons you state, but... |

but to answer your question: 1856. Franklin Pierce was the incumbent Democratic president and the convention refused to re-nominate him and nominated James Buchanan instead.

But seriously, I also think a primary challenge would be counter productive, it would be used by Reps to say, "See, even the Democrats think Obama sucks".

If we run him in 2012, he will lose, and it will be very hard to rebuild the Democratic Party. Very hard.
We have to get a new lease.
Also, I think Obama is very vulnerable.
First, because a lot of the swing states that just barely put him over the top are now very, very reed and getting redder, and second because his close relationship with Wall Street and the charter school scam is likely to get him into trouble.
Then there are the military adventures. They are quite unpopular you know.
We need a real liberal with a record of independence from Wall Street and the military to run against Obama.

|
a bit slow and don't have a sharp memory. I also don't have a sterling work ethic. I tire easily. Now YOU are KNOWN for your intellect but I doubt that you will step up on this one. There are some amazing minds here on DU with personalities to match (Mine leaves a lot to be desired.) Not all are suited to public office. I would fail miserably. Others here could, in my opinion, shine. Thanks for your interest, if not concern, though.
