I have done it for brief periods, till I got over being angry.
Then my curiosity kicks in, and I take whoever it is off!
There's no harm at all in putting someone on ignore...
If the person bothers you that much, then just do it. You can always taken them off later on...

I imagine that you laugh when you get mad.
Me, the challenge is to treat every person the same. The same way I would wish to be treated.
Thus a modicum at least of respect and mirth, my dear Peggy.
(Sometimes I suspect that persons are not human beings, however, but then I try not to let on:)

I love to laugh, and I do it a lot. However, when I'm angry, I'm awful. It takes a lot to provoke me, but once I'm there, look out.
I don't get angry online very much. Nor do I in 'real life' either...

Yes, I tried other ways... like even bringing it up to management and sending proof. Nope... so on to ignore they go. And you know what? EVERY SITE of this size has at least one. I'd say we have about ten. Having been a victim of both physical when growing up, and later on Usenet... I am thankful for the feature.
But, but, that is what the alert feature is for? If it worked as advertised. It don't. So I don't bother with it either any longer.

Not because I disagree with people. I generally find that I'll disagree with just about everyone at one point or another. I can't even agree with my own self sometimes....
I use it to block out the individuals who can't disagree without being disagreeable assholes.
There are times when I'll get into snarky little pissing matches with people, and it's all over and forgotten.
But then there have been times when I've been jumped on by someone who is just plain nasty, for no good reason. They're the ones who go on my ignore list.

I come here because I want to come to a site to work with fellow Democrats to support President Obama and other elected Democrats.
Those who are against that agenda invariably make it onto my ignore list. There are 117 worthy souls on that list already and I add more frequently.
I have other places to go if I want to argue with people about whether it is good to support Obama and Democrats, etc. That is not why I come here.
So, ignore is the best tool for what I want. I'm simply not interested in arguments at DU from people regarding why Obama is unworthy of support.

...there are a few in Election Reform that have turned the whole forum into an echo chamber and attack anyone who doesn't agree with them, put words in people's mouths, ascribe less than good intentions to activists who don't do what these people believe in. Most of the productive people have left or just lurk. It's a sad shame. Of course if I put the echo chamber people on ignore there pretty much won't be any Election Reform forum left.

Except most horror films, have not actively watched those movies, but figure someone else is working on them.
Ignore, I do ignore parts of things, but that is not to ignore but to better see other parts, at some other time I might see something I ignored on a previous reading of some text, or watching of some movie.
So it is an interesting concept, if something hinders thought on a topic, I can ignore it to think on a topic, but usually try to look at it also at some point to see if my concepts are correct or not. So ignore is more of a tool then something done completely on anything.
Since to ignore is to claim something has no possibility of value, but to focus in on a part is not to ignore but to focus.
You can't think on your position if you ignore the other, however you can ignore a comment if it has not substantiated a position. So if you make a valid argument, a comment that is not a valid response is out of sequence, since the rebuttal of the other point has to occur before some other point can be discussed.
Also why last years of my life are not an issue till correction of beer and travel money, and many experiences, issues.
Really interesting concept, to focus on any though is to ignore some other thought.

Not saying my view is better or worse, but sometimes someone that irritates me, and that is there intent, can give much information to think on. They also can latter completely change. I think that if I would have ignored them I would have missed all that.
Or to put it better, my ignore function is internal, so can think on different things at different times without having to not see them.

I do have an administrative-imposed mutual ignore with a person I perhaps should have put on myself, an understandable decision I completely agree with, and then I have two mutual forced ignores requested by the two people themselves. Those kind of freaked me out because as far as I know, I have NEVER had any argument with either of them for any reason and used to enjoy and participate in some of their posts, though even those were pretty few and far between, so other than being on different "sides" in some lounge bullshit (I think - they never seemed to actually be involved in any of it directly), those two are a huge WTF? to me.

but not the user requested forced mutual ignore - I mean it seems like they could just ignore me at will, why do I have to ignore somebody I never had any issue with? I think it might have been some kind of attempt to influence admins.
At any rate it seems the tolerance for troublemaking is lower now and admin-imposed ignores may be getting replaced by faster bannings of the individuals.

There's been a small number in the I/P forum I've had to put on ignore over time, but as it's such a quiet and nearly dead forum with an average of about five people posting there a day, the gaps in the threads made it too hard to participate or to make sense of what was being said, so I took the solitary remaining ignoree off ignore. Being a parent with experience of a demanding toddler, I'm very skilled at ignoring something that's screaming in my face for attention and don't need to actually make it vanish...

I don't have any issues with using ignore. We all opt out of reading some people's posts one way or another. I'm guessing you filter out whose posts you read anyway by doing things like not reading the posts on free republic or hate sites - it's not like we read everything that's posted on the internet. We spend time on forums with the sorts of posts we appreciate.
Some folks just suck the energy out of people. Whether they do it online or in real life, sometimes it's better to simply avoid them instead of getting sucked into their drama. If you want to stop reading someone's posts, there's no shame in making that decision.

And childish. The equivalent of putting your fingers in your ears and going "blah blah blah, I can't hear you." There isn't anything anyone here can say that will offend me and if someone wants to be an asshole, I say go right ahead and be one. What with all the things you are not allowed to say on here I fail to see how anyone could be offended, even by accident. I follow the rules here because I like the site but there are times when I'd like to slap the shit out of some people. It's the frigging internet for Christ's sake, if you are going to run away crying at a stranger's insult, feel like you're being bullied or let certain words bother you so much that you can't deal, I have to wonder how these people get by in real life. They're food for the predators.

Far better to ignore someone that ruin the general civility here, get otherwise useful threads locked and cause the mods to do more work than they should.
Not puting anyone on ignore as some sort of badge of honor is stupid.

but, to be honest, the primaries were rough and I may have for a brief time - but I don't think that I did. Anyway, I've never made a point of NOT putting anyone on "ignore"... I've just never felt compelled to do so (as far as I can remember). But then again, I don't post as often as some - I can go days, weeks and even months without posting.. so I don't get into the back and forth as much as some. I guess you have to do whatever is best for you...

|
I don't. And I seriously doubt you do unless you're into confrontation. Everyone choses who they'll associate with and weed out those people that are too annoying to allow in their presence, and it's a much healthier way to live. Why should it be any different on the internet?
This place would be a hell of a lot more civil and less annoying to everyone who doesn't want to be subjected to the personal petty arguments of others cluttering up and hijacking threads if they DID use such a useful feature as the ignore function. What's childish is forcing the mods to be the adults and having to intercede in the whining squabbles between those members who should be ignoring each other including forcing them to ignore each other. Being the adult is knowing when to NOT engage and walking away and who not to subject yourself to engaging with. Being childish is not being able to recognize when you're beating your head against a wall and continuing to argue with someone you won't ever agree with while annoying everyone else by subjecting them to your inability to not act so childishly instead of putting such people on ignore.

Put one 'stalker' on ignore, but no one else for any great period.
The stalker was a special case. A couple others I just didn't want to deal with for a short time, but took them back off.
In general, I think ignoring people for a particular exchange is a little petty. Constant abuse, derision, or silly accusations are fair cause.
I believe I am on many people's lists for the crime of reason. That I relish.

Some people go out of their way to be nasty. Such people are generally that way because they're defensive because they know full well they're wrong.
I have a fairly long fuse. I'll allow anyone one lousy day or one mistake. If they start repeating it, off my screen they go.
Most of them are among the dearly departed, dead by overindulgence in pizza.

56. I'm pretty sure I'm on a few lists |
|
Many years ago, I tried to debate a Democratic canvasser in the street. She refused. Since then I have made a point to engage where I can. Putting someone on ignore is equivalent to saying "I can't debate." Generally, I have more productive policy debates with right-wingers than with die-hard democrats. We can get right past the political posturing and go to the ideas. Democrats apparently can't handle debates with progressives and liberals. We liberals are simply naughty children who need to be quiet while the grown ups talk.
So, no, I won't be hitting the ignore button any time soon, but I'm sure I'm on a few lists.

|
I was playing on the internet before it was public. I honed my troll-skills at 300 baud. I know how to piss people off when I want to.
Seriously though, I've had two posts censored by the mods early on - which is why I haven't spent a lot of effort on here. My anger at the Democrats runs far deeper than any anger I have at the right-wing simply because I expect more from them. They bring out the worst in me and DU's previous tow-the-line philosophy just made me stay away. Now, they seem to have realized that was not the best approach and we might have a chance for some more honest discussion.

I've generally found Republicans to have a headful of slogans and nothing to back them up. As a group, they tend to refuse to even consider arguments that go against their chosen narratives. It's like talking to a wall.
The same mentality can be found on the left, of course-- but in my experience, it's not the norm, and people on the left tend to much more likely to consider arguments that don't necessarily mesh with their world view.

I work with people who are more intellectual and logical by nature. They are 'honor bound' to defend their views so we can have conversations that allow us work through a series of disagreements to find out where the root of the disagreement lies.
I tend to hang with the leftists, however, and have a much broader circle of people I interact with and I can find you plenty of leftists who have a hard time considering differing world views. The difference is in how each type expresses it. A right-winger will be a wall of stone or a punch in the mouth as it suits them. The left-winger will dance around for hours arguing in a circle without letting your points sink in. The latter *looks* like they are considering your view but really they are trying to wear you down. The right-winger attacks and leaves.

I found it very annoying trying to read threads with "Ignored" throughout. Now, for the most part, I slip sometimes, I just ignore them without placing them on ignore. There are a few I would love to place on ignore because they rarely, if ever, produce anything other than drivel, but a few who really just piss me off, sometimes do actually say something quite relevant, even I don't agree with that person.

Other people may choose what they perceive as the "high road" of tolerance and community, but I've no time for blithering foolishness and no interest in useless poppycock. Some will disagree but I figure they must have a surplus of life.

DU can send you an email if you are someone's buddy list but not if you are on an ignore list. That's messed up. I think we should at least be able to see how many people ignore us. I can understand not seeing *who* ignores us because then we might feel compelled to hunt them down and demand to know why...and that would be bad. Still, inquiring minds want to know...

Now I don't have the heart drag you into my complicated joke, which probably wouldn't have worked anyway. The idea was I would say, "I wonder if anyone is ignoring me?" and wait a day or two, and then no matter how many people replied, I would reply to myself saying, "I guess everyone is ignoring me."
Which would suggest that everyone who replied to me is on my ignore list, see? I know, it's not ha-ha funny. It's that other kind of funny that doesn't make people smile or laugh.
Your fine compliment saved me from having to explain myself after the fact.

Both the "ignores" I had, I haven't seen posts from either since, if ever.
However, I have, lately, been thinking about using that option again. Just to, maybe, ease my aging blood pressure factors somewhat.
There are some -- even more than before -- it seems, very unsavory types here, unfortunately.

84. I really tried hard for a number of years to |
|
keep my ignore list down to around three people.
But in the last twelve months, I have put a great many people on "Ignore." I do not mind people whose views are 90 degrees to the right of mine, as I consider all Obama Cheerleaders to be. (I mean, if Obama declared himself to be a Republican tomorrow, but a Republican Lite, I could actually be more tolerant of the man. It is knowing that he still thinks he is representing the brand label that FDR used in his quest to help the average person that troubles me so deeply about Obama.)
But I digress. In terms of folks on my ignore list, they are people who are extremely snippy with me and had to go, if only for the sake of my blood pressure.
And any time I look at some discussion, and there is one person making a sensible statement, followed by someone with "Ignore" as their name, and the sensible person makes a sensible answer, and the "Ignore person" continues on with their irrational discourse, (or so I imagine) for another half screen or so, with the sensible person wasting minutes of their time trying to make them understand, I <sigh> to myself, wishing that the poor sensible person would just give in and start helping their high blood pressure and use the "Ignore" function.

here's the interesting thing --
the people I put on ignore seem to have disappeared --
Certainly the "ignore" posts I see don't equate to 70 posters here --
Looks to me more like 10, with 5 of them posting occasionally --
Save for 9/11 -- where it looks like about 5 there who are dedicated, if not
obsessed with 9/11 and trying to find ways to debunk MIHOP/LIHOP!!
PS: And I have only one rule for getting on my IGNORE list ... be disingenuous!

101. I have fewer than I can count on a single hand's fingers on ignore. |
|
I imagine I'm on several lists though...
I mostly just use it when I stumble across stupidity that is so profound that it calls for a tsunami of profanity... the likes of which would almost certainly lead to banning... and I've indulged in some pretty high-tide-like waves of profanity, insults, and general denigration of poster's worth as human beings in my time.
Maybe people are right to have me on ignore... :+
Maybe the board should ban me now, to protect the stupid...

What you described is how I deal with "Ignore" these days. Every once in a while, you get someone who is so fanatical about the OP that they insult everyone in the thread who disagrees with them. If someone is crapping on a thread and being downright obnoxious, they tend to make the Ignore list. But, they eventually come off of it. I have nobody on mine now. Like many others here, I have often found that some of them got tombstoned before I emptied my list.
I used to have a fairly long list, but I couldn't follow some of the threads. Sometimes you can read around a single "Ignored", but when they come one right after another, it's no so easy.

Only put annoying/disruptive OP's (thread-starters) on ignore. This will generally keep the groupies out of view, many of who never or rarely start a thread anyway.

I don't have time to WASTE with that shit. There are enough Republican idiots on Facebook and Yahoo to deal with; DU should be a sanctuary from all that.

Then I put two people on ignore, and it Improved my DU Experience, as the marketing world might put it. One of them has since been TS'd (not in any connection with me), so now I have one person on iggy.
I don't put people on ignore because I disagree with them or dislike their views, or simply because they've been rude. In the case of the two in question, it was the same issue: they went out of their way to 'bait' and taunt people in a particular forum representing a different viewpoint from their own. Not just in the sense of ridiculing people's beliefs, but attacking people on a very personal level - even in one case taunting a forum member about their appearance. I felt I didn't need this sort of attitude around me, and used the iggy function,

I have exactly one person on ignore, and that was because they have spewed utter nonsense for years.
I am a firm believer in at least hearing all sides of an issue, even when I disagree with the other point of view. There is always a possibility I may learn something new or have my view expanded.
"Ignore" can be the same as putting your fingers in your ears and going "la-la-la-la-la" -- not a very bright thing to do. It can create a dangerous echo chamber, much like FAUX, that just reinforces your own (possibly incorrect) views.

196. I use it very sparingly - but when I use it, it's for a very good reason. There are simply some |
|
posters on this site who should not be interacting with one another, or, as God told Job, "there's just something about you that pisses me off."
Funny thing, when I was going over my ignore list the other day, I counted ten posters on it. Six of them have been tombstoned since I put them on ignore. Which is the most important thing to keep in mind about judicially applying the *ignore* function: by doing so in certain extreme cases, the very account you might save is your own.
I have no doubts that had I continued interacting with the posters I have on ignore, I probably would have flamed myself into a banning by now. I would definitely recommend you use it if you encounter a poster with whom it is simply impossible to have a civil discussion with.

I only put people on ignore that personally attack me, name calling, etc...

It's a freakin' message board. I just don't take it that seriously any more.

201. Putting people on ignore does not make any sense to me. |
|
If someone is making inappropriate comments, you should alert the mods, and the mods will take care of it for you.
Alerting is better than ignoring. If someone is constantly having their posts deleted my moderators, their account will probably be terminated.

203. Never. If I'm tired of seeing someone's post... |
|
...I can skip over it for a few days until I am no longer interested. My thought is that you NEVER know when something, somewhere, will be posted by even the most hated posters that will be insightful for some reason or another. I'd rather read 1000 annoying comments than miss one important one.

and posted a thread similar to this....same responses..i did it. i put someone on ignore after fretting over it..that person is now td'd..recently i put about 4 people on ignore..and im much happier..i notice that often a thread is derailed by ignored..i dont have time for it..i like it here..and learn a lot..not interested in the snarky one liners and there are a few issues which are fundamental to my moral and ethical understanding..so if someone wants to defend the war in afghanistan..at this point..im not interested in hearing their opinion..just not..so i cover my ears and could not be happier here..i couldnt take it anymore..the most amazing thing is that, at this point, there are fewer than 5 on my ignore list..the difference is amazing..just a few very vocal who were disrupting my experience..use it, you will be glad you did
ps..ignored did not respond to this thread

208. So I'm still tempted..... |
|
From this thread, I may deduce that I am a childish person with no self control who cries anytime someone disagrees with me and simply do not possess the brain power to skip over the annoying, nonsensical, baiting, lying, rw words of a particular poster. I may even consider myself stalked...nah just kidding, no stalkers (and that's no invitation btw!)
Besides I keep wasting time looking for the insanely rw posts of this one particular poster. Putting them on ignore would free up the time to read some of the good stuff. OTOH, if they are on ignore, then where would be the fun of being able to point out the "Rep in Dems clothing" theory I have about this poster on their threads!?
OMG, I AM the stalker. So, is that against the rules?

215. On the contrary, I (a non-ignore user) think you are very wise. |
|
I don't use it, but understand that many have very valid reasons for doing so.
I remember all too well California Peggy's troubles. It's wise to use it if you think its helpful; it's foolish to do so if it isn't helpful.
No need to apologize and those who keep repeating the "fingers/ears/lah, lah, lah" thing are being just as childish and intolerant as well.

220. Personally, I've always felt the "ignore" feature found on most |
|
boards is silly and immature. It might be appropriate for pre-schoolers who lack the skill and ability to handle adversity or different points of view, but supposed adults using it? I think that speaks volumes about the ones who use it.

Everyone who has gotten completely under my skin has eventually been tombstoned. These days I find I don't even need to report anyone to the mods. I merely have to wish them into the cornfield and they eventually disappear.

I have only unrecommended once for something I thought was racist. This contrasts interestingly with the fact most of my posts are unrecommended by at least someone.

I find the "ignore" function a HUGE positive. Some people really do have nothing to say. Fortunately, those make up only a small handfull of DUers.
