3. Gawd... Every Philly person I know loves those things...
I have enough addictions already, but hadn't quite caught on to that one. ;) Good for those who need their fix, I guess.

Jersey Mike's sometimes carries them, but that's about it.

Tastykake Bakery workers voted on August 11th to be represented by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTWGM) International Union Local 492 in Philadelphia and contract negotiations are underway for a first-time labor agreement between the parties.

Tastykake Bakery was founded in 1914 and last year had gross sales of more than $280 million.

According to Attorney Mike Kopac, legal counsel of Local 492, while the maintenance employees are represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Union Local 98 in Philadelphia, and despite numerous organizing drives, the company has always made their product with nonunion workers.

8. There are just a few things which make Philly, Philly"
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 04:31 PM by PCIntern
Cheesesteaks (Jim's on South Street my personal fave - stay away from racist Geno's)
Soft Pretzels (Still great!!!)
Tastykakes (Tasted much better at one time)
Phillies (Yay!)
Liberty Bell (What people think is the crack, isn't...it was the attempted repair. The crack is harder to see)
Independence Hall (where the founding Fathers met to get rid of slavery according to one asshole I've heard)
The Franklin Institute (although the way it USED to be in the 60's and before was superior)
The Barnes Museum (nothing like in in the whole wide world anywhere)
Hoagies!!!!

18. Your list is killing me.
Every time I go back I get a cheese steak, soft pretzel (which I can remember getting when I was no older than 4), and Tastykakes. I loved the chocolate cupcake and my sis liked the butterscotch crumpets.

AND, you cannot get a hoagie anywhere in the world like back East. : (

27. Point isn't to pass judgment - tasty cakes are junk food like twinkies.
Point was what made Philly Philly. By that standard extinct beers and same-old same-old zoos count. For many of us the Philly Zoo was the first big city zoo we went to. That made it special, even though I later visited game parks in Kenya and Tanzania.

Whether it was any better than Schmidt's back then I do not know.

30. And by the way, the Phillies back then were mostly a lousy baseball team.
And the one year they actually made a run for it (1964) they blew a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 games left to play by losing 10 straight.

32. Now you're off the mark...
that's not the point: the Phillies ARE our team, and many of us who lived thru that stayed with the team all these years. As you can see from my Avatar, I'm a big fan.

better distributor (if that's indeed what they're doing).
They're very good at getting lots of product to the stores (even during disasters like ice/snopocalpse/hurricanes (they're in FL too), the quality is consistently good.
One time there was a minor quality issue and called to report it and they offered to stop by my home with a gift basket full of goodies.

I can't say the same about some of the other bakeries.

I knew someone'd come thru here...

You'll have a mixed opinion of Tastykake which you'll probably be seeing...it used to be a lot better, but some of the varieties still have their moments...

20. that's true, BUT
when you're standing in line in a Deli to pay the check and you look down and see the, in my case, Lemon Pie, you can't help but eat one...buying it first is still preferred by the proprietor...but the cost $1.10 or so is much higher than the 12 cents they used to cost!!!

24. Oh, the lemon pie is by far the best evah!!
Hostess pies are too sweet for me, but give me anything tastycake and I'm on cloud nine!!! The creme filled cupcakes are awesome!

I can only hope the new owners will continue the tradition.

BTW, the next time I'm in Philly I will get my cheesesteak fix. How good is that place you mentioned in your earlier post? :-)

25. I think Jim's and D'Alessandro's are the best...
obviously, there are places wherein everyone has their own favorite. The schmuck at Geno's had the "You must speak English" poster up, and horrible racist ads on the radio, extolling the virtues of being legal...so he can forget my recommendation.

Jim's is on South Street and I think the best of the large-scale places.

Everyone kvells over some of the pizza places here, but I have to say that the best pizza I've ever eaten was in Buffalo, NY with one or two outings in NYC almost matching...pizza here's pretty bland.

And become the Salt Lakers serving a Salt Lake cheese steak at the stadium?
