The pat down is only there to penalize folks for not wanting to be subjected to Chertoff's client's backscatter X-Ray.

The TSA will not even allow you to request a standard metal detector, even if one is in use at the security checkpoint.

Once TSA acknowledges that some people are less of a threat (meaning zero, like this 6 year old) than others the Rubicon will have been crossed and there will be no way for them to justify their indiscriminate searches.
