Kindergarten teacher has kids oink at student who was messy

HARRIMAN - A Roane County kindergarten teacher who reportedly told students to encircle a classmate, call him a pig and make pig noises because the boy is messy, received a one-day unpaid suspension and had a letter of reprimand placed in her file.

The incident involved Debbie Hayes, an educator at Bowers Elementary School who has taught kindergarten in Roane County for 38 years.

Dr. Toni H. McGriff, director of Roane County Schools, called the March 16 incident "simply unbelievable."

In her reprimand letter, McGriff told Hayes she was "appalled with the actions in this situation.''

2. A vile act on her part.
She's clearly in the wrong calling if she can marginalize and victimize a young person, regardless of faults, which she should deal with lovingly.

3. Maybe the teacher should wear a dunce cap for the rest of the school year.
If she's into shaming, she should experience a dose of it herself.

6. Where I live, that wouldn't even be a small tiny blip on the radar.
It is good to see that, somewhere, teachers who do such things are reprimanded. Where I live, we were lucky to make it through the day without being preached at or beaten. Our parents were not outraged by that either. It sucked.
