Fukushima: A Month of Media Disinformation

Today marks exactly a month since the nuclear power disaster in Japan began. Along with the ongoing discharges of radioactivity from the Fukushima nuclear plant complex, there has been a largely outrageous flow of media coverage.

Brian Williams on NBC Nightly News on April 6th asked a good question: "And what about all that water, the many million gallons of it, highly radioactive, dumped in the Pacific Ocean for days on end--and we've all been told it will dissipate. But how can this not be harmful?" he queried correspondent Miguel Almaguer.

The question might have been good but the response to it, Almaguer's report, was far from that. He presented a talking head expert, Luca Centurioni of Scripps Institution of Oceanography, who said: "No, there is no immediate danger." (Centurioni's background, according to his resume posted on the Internet, reflects no background in radioactivity.)

"The bottom line," said Almaguer, "experts are in agreement there's no threat to our water or our food." He added: "And as you can see Brian, California's coastline is as beautiful as ever." Radioactivity, of course, is invisible.

Where it's stated that the levels of radiation in the ground water at the nuke plant is rising; what is their definition of ground water?

Is groundwater not water that is located beneath the surface not just in a basement level of a building?

I'm so confused that I had to look for a typical definition of groundwater: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundwater

If the definition is correct and it applies to the nuke plant, than what else am I to conclude that this contamination is actually going underground and has contaminated the water UNDER that ground. And, it's not like TEPCO's ground water is a separate entity from Japan's ground water, right?

Sorry for all the chatter but I'm trying hard to understand these (sometimes) twisted statements coming out of Japan.

The blue on that, where the artesian well is dug into is the ground water.

Oh and should add, it SHOULD flow towards the sea, not towards Tokyo. So contamination of all of this means 1\3 or the country will be uninhabitable... quite worst than oh Chernobyl.

I have yet to find a GOOD hydrological map of japan. Some countries believe this is part of national security.

But I was always happy to see posts repeating TEPCO's assurance of nothing really happened televised by NHK. I mean, it must have been true, it was on television, and those people managed the plants ...

Europeans warned to avoid drinking milk or eating vegetables due to high radiation levels

"The radiation risk from Fukushima is "no longer negligable," says CRIIRAD, the French research authority on radioactivity. It is now warning expectant mothers and young children to avoid drinking milk or rainwater. They should also avoid certain types of vegetables and cheese due to the dangerously high levels of radiation they may contain thanks to the radioactive fallout spreading across the globe (http://www.euractiv.com/en/health/r...).

CRIIRAD now says that eating these items qualifies as "risky behavior." And yet, in practically the same sentence, the organization claims there is "absolutely no need" for anyone to take iodine tablets.

That's right: There's so much radiation in the food that you probably shouldn't eat it. But all that radiation is so harmless that you don't need to protect yourself from it with iodine. It's amazing how these people think they can have it both ways.

The institute goes on to say that drinking rainwater might be dangerous, but standing in the rain is perfectly safe. There's actually some sense to this, as ingesting radioactive water is indeed far more dangerous than merely being drenched in it. But U.S. nuclear authorities make no such distinction, by the way.

Don't worry, it's only low levels of radiation, or so says our governments and their agencies. What they always fail to mention is that this is ongoing, even though according to most MSM it no longer exists, and that there is no solution in sight, and that if these small doses of "harmless," radiation continue for months or years, that radiation does not go away once a human body absorbs it. It stays there for a long, long, time. Even longer than that body lives. Even when dead the corpse remains radioactive. That is why they are leaving over 1,000 corpses within the evacuation area around the plant to rot. They have not devised a safe way to dispose of these radioactive corpses.

Nice thoughts to think on a sunny California spring day.
