Redford: Palin benefits from 'how limited she is'
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/04/14/redford-palin-benefits-from-how-limited-she-is/

(CNN) – Actor, director and environmentalist Robert Redford is offering his view on Sarah Palin's quick rise to political stardom, saying the former Alaska governor benefits by "how limited she is."

Speaking to the AOL blog PopEater, the legendary actor says the country's electorate is largely divided into three separate groups: "traditionalists, cultural creative people and the moderns."

Traditionalists, the group Redford says are drawn to Palin, "are the people who don't want change, they're afraid of change therefore they have anger - the fear card is a very big powerful card and when you have people afraid of change; they'll do anything to prevent it."

"They're doing it because they're limited, frightened of people who are not as limited. I think Sarah Palin, part of her strength is how limited she is," Redford concluded.

(Basically that's the entire story. Doesn't have how he defined 'cultural creative people and moderns'.)

1. I remember some teabagger last year
holding forth in the parking lot at my school, "Just stop spending! All they need to do is stop!"

So "limited" makes a lot of sense.

7. Of course "Just stop spending" is code
It never means "just stop spending" on defense. It means "just stop spending" on social programs.

2. Much as I like Redford and as correct as he is about Palin's appeal
His description of the three separate groups sounds a little flaky.

8. That's probably the fault of the interviewer.
Traditional/Creative or innovators make sense but third category needed unpacking.

6. Based on the book, "The Cultural Creatives: How 50 Million People are Changing the World",

More info from Richard Florida who also writes about this:

http://www.creativeclass.com/creative_class/2010/09/17/the-density-of-artistic-and-cultural-creatives/

"My past several posts have looked at the density of key variables across America’s metropolitan regions. Today, I turn to the density of a subset of the creative class – the density of artists and cultural creatives. My own earlier research, which landed me on “The Colbert Report” of all places, showed that metros with higher proportions of employed artistic and cultural workers also have higher incomes, higher rates of innovation, and higher housing prices. The reason is not that artistic and cultural creatives are more likely to launch new businesses or invent new products, but that their location in an area signals that a community is open to diverse groups of people who are open to new ideas and self-expression. The concentration of artistic and cultural creatives in a place is a sign of a local ecosystem that is more conducive to generating new ideas and mobilizing resources around them."
