"22 Senators Demand President Obama Exercise Executive Action on Immigration "

http://immigrationimpact.com/2011/04/14/22-senators-demand-president-obama-exercise-executive-action-on-immigration/

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) is one of the letter’s 22 signators.
As it becomes increasingly evident that Congress is too mired in politics to reform our broken immigration system, a steady chorus demanding executive action is growing. This week, 22 U.S. Senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid, sent a letter to President Obama asking him to grant “deferred action”─a stay from deportation─to DREAM Act-eligible students. The letter follows a campaign by immigrant rights and advocacy groups earlier this month calling on the Obama Administration to use executive authority to reform immigration policy.

Referencing the Bush Administration’s use of prosecutorial discretion, 22 members of Congress urged President Obama to use his executive authority to provide relief in a letter sent Wednesday. They write:

You are the nation’s chief law enforcement officer and are, of course, obligated to
enforce the law. However, the exercise of prosecutorial discretion in light of
law enforcement priorities and limited resources has a long history in this nation and
is fully consistent with our strong interest in the rule of law. Your Administration
has a strong record of enforcement, having deported a record number of undocumented
immigrants last year. At the same time, you have granted deferred action to a small
number of DREAM Act students on a case-by-case basis, just as the Bush Administration did.

We would support a grant of deferred action to all young people who meet the rigorous
requirements necessary to be eligible for cancellation of removal or a stay of removal
under the DREAM Act.

Although the enforcement-only crowd loves to claim that the President’s use of executive authority would be an attempt to make “end-runs” around Congress, the American Immigration Council highlighted the “important and completely legitimate role the Executive branch of government has always played in interpreting and implementing existing laws” in a statement issued this week. The Council also urged the Obama Administration to stop insisting its hands are tied when it comes to immigration.

GILLIBRAND URGES PRESIDENT TO HALT DEPORTATIONS OF DREAM ACT YOUTH

Washington, DC – U.S .Senator Kirsten Gillibrand joined Majority Leader Harry Reid and 16 of her Senate colleagues today in calling on President Obama to halt deportations of young people who qualify for the DREAM Act and grant those students and young people deferred action on deportation proceedings. Currently, tens of thousands of young people who were brought to this country by their parents and pose no threat to our national security face the prospect of being deported.

“Current law unfairly punishes thousands of young people who grew up here and know only America as their home, holding them back from making a contribution to our country’s military and economy,” said Senator Gillibrand, an original co-sponsor of the DREAM Act. “These young people deserve better. They deserve a chance at the American dream – to work hard, get a good education, serve in the military, earn their way to legal status, help grow our economy and keep our country safe. While we work to move this important bill forward, I urge the President to take action now by halting these deportations to strengthen our national security and our economy.”

The Senators wrote in a letter to President Obama, “We would support a grant of deferred action to all young people who meet the rigorous requirements necessary to be eligible for cancellation of removal or a stay of removal under the DREAM Act. We strongly believe that DREAM Act students should not be removed from the United States, because they have great potential to contribute to our country and children should not be punished for their parents’ mistakes.”

The DREAM Act is legislation that would provide 50,000 to 65,000 young people who were brought to America by their parents access to an affordable college education, U.S. citizenship, and eligibility to serve in America’s armed forces. The DREAM Act passed the House last year, but was blocked by a Senate filibuster in December 2010. Senator Gillibrandwill continue to push for passage of this legislation in the 112th Congress.

17. Thanks! Last night I was reading about "Deferred Action" and am intrigued by it.
I know there has been concern about the Dream Act that it would put the parents in jeopardy.

It sounds like the Deferred Action would help with that. :hi:

5. IF she is this solid on poverty issues, then I will hope what you are saying comes to pass.
At least on this issue, she is showing real feminist spine, and I will be watching her!

Thanks! :yourock:

Gillibrand is the best thing Gov Patterson did for the state of NY. I remember I was disappointed when she was appointed because I didn't know anything about her. Now I LOVE her!

42. Same here, including
some students I have taught. And I agree with what people are saying about Gillibrand. She was a Rep in the district next to mine and I teach in what was her district. It is very conservative. She was very good as a rep, but she is fantastic - and far more progressive - as a senator. I really like her.

Voicemail I suppose.

21. That's easy... do both. ^_^
Last night, we called Reid's office to thank him, and his voice mail box was FULL!

While that is good news, I told my young Latino friend that meant it was really important to call and thank him, because he was also probably getting hate messages!

Same with Gillibrand... the thanks are just as important as the pushes!

If you want a personal message that is fine, but I know they also tally the voice messages.

Thanks for doing that, and please... do continue to share this. Especially if you Facebook, like my young Latino friend. He will probably reach a couple hundred that way, and that is really important, especially with our one senator who didn't sign. We were pleased to find out that Bennet *did* sign!

A call of thanks goes to Bennet tomorrow! :)

31. you have my sympathy... its tough in a red state. I would lose what precious little is left
of my sanity. ^_^

In those cases, assuming you are like most of us and have limitations on both time and energy, I would suggest working on doing some educational things.... get away from political "tags" that separate us.

I find I can get through on issues if I approach it in different ways. I've been able to get more people to take action, and that is satisfying. Slow and tedious, but its happening....

Thank you for Facebooking it! I think that has a lot of potential, and keep us updated with the calling efforts!

http://www.sunfloweract.com/

Organizing for America (Obama's organization) had a pretty strong phone-bank going on this last summer when we had that trainwreck in the Senate with the Bush Tax Cut extensions, the Unemployment benefit extensions, the end of DADT, and the Dream Act. I hope OFA has handed off to these state organizations, so they can get themselves some experience and a chance to be successful, so they can recruit and build their organizations independently from whatever administration is in D.C.

28. "Senate Dems To Obama: Stop Deporting DREAM Act Students"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/14/senate-dems-to-obama-stop_n_849419.html

Leading Senate Democrats, including Majority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.), called on the president on Wednesday to stop deporting undocumented young people who grew up in the United States.

A letter signed by 22 Senate Democrats asks President Barack Obama to use his executive authority to prevent deportation of young people who would have benefited from the DREAM Act, a bill that failed in the upper chamber last year. The legislation would have allowed undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children to stay, provided they kept a clean record and either enrolled in college or joined the military.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and her Democratic co-signers said in the letter that they will try to push to pass the DREAM Act through the Senate this session. But facing strong opposition from the Republican-led House, the senators argued the president should move in the meantime to help DREAM Act-eligible students and military service members.

The letter from Senate Democrats calls for the president to grant "deferred action" to young people who meet the requirements that would allow them to avoid deportation under the bill. The letter was also signed by Democratic Sens. Carl Levin (Mich.), Dick Durbin (Ill.), Maria Cantwell (Wash.), Patty Murray (Wash.) and others. "We strongly believe that DREAM Act students should not be removed from the United States," the letter reads, "because they have great potential to contribute to our country and children should not be punished for their parents' mistakes."

Gillibrand makes the case for DREAMers.

32. So, if the DREAMact failed last year, and the way to avoid deportation is to
go to college or join the military, but they can't go to college because the DREAMact failed... then......???

That pretty much leaves being forced to join the military????

That really sux.....
