Kyl revises Congressional Record to omit 'well over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does' is abortion
byBarbara Morrill

Last Friday, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) stood on floor of the United States Senate and lied through his teeth, saying:

If you want an abortion you go to Planned Parenthood and that's well over 90% of what Planned Parenthood does.

But today, if you go to the pages of the Congressional Record, it's as if it never happened:

If you want an abortion you go to Planned Parenthood and that is what Planned Parenthood does.

1. Trying to sweep it under the rug, eh?

From the looks of that, he could just as easily have hidden the Congressional Record on his scalp. :P

3. "I ask unanimous consent to revise and extend my remarks"
Think of them as magic words. When congress critters preface their comments like this, they can say the stupidest fucking thing on camera and have it replayed a zillion times, but when the Congressional Record is published, the "official" record of their comments says anything they want it to say, because everyone consented to them revising or extending what they said.

So, Sen. Kyl can say something that's not intended to be factual, and by the time it gets published, it gets scrubbed clean. This happens quite often, and is even used for unanimous consent resolutions. That's why I was so disgusted a couple of weeks ago, when folks supporting military action in Libya pointed to the March 1 "unanimous non-binding resolution" of the Senate that we oughta go into Libya with guns blazing. Either the people passing that information along didn't know how the publication of congress critters' remarks is actually accomplished, or they were counting on the public to be ignorant of it. Either way, it was like saying the unicorn told the leprechaun something, and relying on that statement to bolster one's argument.

5. A Ted Stevens clone?
He must think that "revising" a website flushes it all down the "series of tubes"... I'm sure there are plenty of screen caps to remind him that it was there...before it wasn't.
