"Birthers take GOP hostage, lock sane conservatives in the cellar"
. . .haha. . .an afternoon blog post by Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Cynthia Tucker:

As I’ve written before, the Republican Party has been taken hostage by its lunatic fringe — a motley collection of anti-government types, leftover John Birchers and paranoid conspiracy theorists, with a few racists thrown in for good measure — and is likely to be wandering in the wilderness, unable to capture the White House, for years to come.

That just goes to show that if you cotton to folks’ prejudices, they will reward you for it with their support. And the news is even worse than it appears at first glance. (I know — how can there be worse news for the GOP than an early lead by a carnival barker with a long record of wives, hard partying and questionable business deals?)

The poll also shows how large a factor birtherism is in the GOP:

Only 38% of Republican primary voters say they’re willing to support a candidate for President next year who firmly rejects the birther theory and those folks want Mitt Romney to be their nominee for President next year. With the other 62% of Republicans- 23% of whom say they are only willing to vote for a birther and 39% of whom are not sure- Donald Trump is cleaning up.

Hahaha. . .

and I must say, I rather liked one of my own comments on this piece:

"Well, since any conspiracy theory seems to pass as “controversy” these days, when is the Republican Party going to prove that their collection of circus performers and tea partiers aren’t actually persons who have been abducted by aliens and reprogrammed to destroy our government and country? Just look into Michelle Bachmann’s eyes – something says “alien abductee” to me.

They should each be placed under hypnosis therapy to determine if they’ve ever encountered a UFO."
