Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. Blames The iPad For Killing Jobs
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 07:20 PM by The Northerner
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL), who admits to owning an iPad, blames the Apple Inc. product for "eliminating thousands of American jobs."

"A few short weeks ago I came to the House floor after having purchased an iPad and said that I happened to believe, Mr. Speaker, that at some point in time this new device, which is now probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs. Now Borders is closing stores because, why do you need to go to Borders anymore? Why do you need to go to Barnes & Noble? Buy an iPad and download your newspaper, download your book, download your magazine," Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL, Chicago) said on the House floor on Friday afternoon.

Ironically, it was only last month that Rep. Jackson was promoting the Apple iPad and Amazon on the House floor.

1. You know if we went back to making paper out of
animal skins or bark, we could really fix that unemployment number.

4. Electronic readers, and providers, are once again engaged in corporate censorship
As tens of thousands of books are digitized and sold, tens of thousands of more books will never be digitized, and thus drop out of circulation.

This pattern was established by digitizing music for CD's, and furthered by digitizing to iTunes and other MP3 mediums. The same pattern will be followed by the book publishing industry.

8. Exactly. What is also concerning is what companies can track ie
not just what books individuals download but even the parts of a text they highlight. Why people aren't alarmed by
e-books baffles me.

9. Is that the choice of the providers or the authors?
Many older books that are out of print etc are available for free online in several e-formats.

10. and tens of thousands of out of print books will decay, unread, on bookshelves...
ANYONE with a paper copy of a book in the public domain can scan it and create an e-book in about 15 minutes. Nothing to do with censorship. The publishing industry prints the books that sell; it always had.

5. Rep. Jackson, this country needs some serious infrastructure repair
so that things like ipads and other new doodads can continue to function.
We need to get off oil and get on renewable.
There is plenty of work that needs to be done.
We need some congressional leadership to make it happen.
