Chinese women "hold the cards" when in comes to marriage now, males can't get a date
Edited on Fri Apr-15-11 08:25 PM by Liberal_in_LA
For Many Chinese Men, No Deed Means No Dates

BEIJING — In the realm of eligible bachelors, Wang Lin has a lot to recommend him. A 28-year-old college-educated insurance salesman, Mr. Wang has a flawless set of white teeth, a tolerable karaoke voice and a three-year-old Nissan with furry blue seat covers.

“My friends tell me I’m quite handsome,” he said in confident English one recent evening, fingering his car keys as if they were a talisman.

But by the exacting standards of single Chinese women, it seems, Mr. Wang lacks that bankable attribute known as real property. Given that even a cramped, two-bedroom apartment on the dusty fringe of the capital sells for about $150,000, Mr. Wang’s $900-a-month salary means he may forever be condemned to the ranks of the renting.

Last year, he said, this deficiency prompted a high-end dating agency to reject his application. In recent months, half a dozen women have turned down a second meeting after learning that he had no means to buy a home.

“Sometimes I wonder if I will ever find a wife,” said Mr. Wang, who lives with his parents, retired factory workers who remind him of his single status with nagging regularity. “I feel like a loser.”

----------

The marriage competition is fierce, and statistically, women hold the cards. Given the nation’s gender imbalance, an outgrowth of a cultural preference for boys and China’s stringent family-planning policies, as many as 24 million men could be perpetual bachelors by 2020, according to the report.

1. He had me at furry blue car seat covers

Well this is what happens after decades of a society that forces one child and the concept that a boy is better.

10. I was thinking that my teenage daughters might
just marry some nice Chinese boys in the future. I have had this thought for quite some time as I saw what was going on in China. I have had several male friends from China whose attitude towards sons has always amazed me. They thought that I was cursed (well too strong a word but unlucky) to have two beautiful girls. God has given me two wonderful blessings, and I honestly believe that I have been a better father to daughters than I would have been to sons. I was always a bookish uncoordinated small child that was not much into sports. My very athletic brother was blessed with three athletic boys.

Boy and a Girl

And man is there a difference!

But there is equal male to female demographics...so it puts things in perspective

9. they studied their population problem and calculated that if
people had one child they could feed everyone. More than that and famine on a grand scale was inevitable.

I read that women in neighboring countries like Thailand are being kidnapped and taken to China to be wives.

16. Yes and to be honest that's a policy we should all live by but even that isn't perfect
Families want men to carry on the family name and that's why thousands of baby chinese girls ended up adopted overseas - so the families could try again for a boy.

Nature is now correcting herself in China - Boys can't carry on the family name unless they have a wife to carry the baby. Perhaps some of those families should have kept the girl and be happy with that.

23. I bet a lot of parents will regret having aborted their female fetus(es) in favor of males
When their sons aren't able to get married. I'm not saying I agree, but having your kid get married and have kids is important to a lot of people.

Not happy about it though, just wish boys hadn't been favored in the first place.

25. Alot of those girls were shipped overseas for adoption
Edited on Sun Apr-17-11 01:11 PM by LynneSin
You would have been hardpressed to adopt a male chinese baby but female chinese babies were plentiful in the USA. And I'm not begrudging the families that adopted these girls, many of those families it was their one chance to actually have a child.

24. One child policy come home to roost?
And I thought I remember once reading that more abortions were performed when the mother knew it was a girl and not a boy. Although I can't back that up.
