Detroit: OCCUPATION AT CATHERINE FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL!
OCCUPATION AT CATHERINE FERGUSON HIGH SCHOOL!

STUDENTS AND SUPPORTERS SIT-IN TO DEMAND THAT NO DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOL CLOSES

Following in the civil rights tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, Catherine Ferguson students — along with their babies and toddlers, teachers and supporters — have begun a peaceful occupation of Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA). CFA, located at 2750 Selden, is a Detroit Public school that is slated to be closed in June. The students who are sitting down have five demands:

No School Closings

Keep All Detroit Schools Public – No More Charters or Privatization

Reinstate all programs and services that have been eliminated, including art & music as well as counselors & social workers

Student Control of Curriculum and School Character to assure that every Detroit school provides equal, quality education for all

No discipline or retaliation against any of the participants in the occupation

Catherine Ferguson Academy (CFA) is a Detroit public high school for pregnant and parenting teen girls– the only one of its kind in the nation. Providing an excellent education and services for both the teen mothers and their children, CFA has received international attention, numerous awards and is the subject of several documentaries.

5. I just saw the clip on the local news...
Channel 7 actually... Pretty moving stuff. Carolyn Lewis accidentally seemed to be sympathetic towards them.
Sometimes strong actions have meaning. This appeared to get the point across well.

17. OH, long time anchor on WXYZ Detroit Channel 7 (ABC)
Yeah, come to think of it I think it was Carolyn Lewis (Diana's daughter) who was acting like she favored the protesters. She probably got read the riot from her producer for accidentally letting her true position show through.

http://www.freep.com/article/20110416/NEWS01/110416001/1001/news/Students-school-pregnant-teens-arrested-protesting-its-closure

A group of students from the Catherine Ferguson Academy — a school for pregnant teens and teen parents — were arrested Friday at the school while protesting its pending closure.

At the scene, Detroit Public School Police Department Chief Roderick Grimes confirmed the arrests; he said the students “refused to comply” with an order to leave the building.

It is unclear how many were arrested and taken to a police precinct. They were ticketed and released.

21. I've got a kick for this. THIS is the way you act...........
when and IF a general strike comes about. You occupy public place and if necessary you get arrested. And then another group comes in and occupies. Lather, rinse, repeat. And not just schools. Corporate offices, factories, stores, EVERYTHNG, but the Mom and Pops.
