Detroit to send layoff notices to all its public teachers
Before you say 'Well, it's Detroit', read The Shock Doctrine. And if you think this won't happen to YOUR local public schools, wake up.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The emergency manager appointed to put Detroit's troubled public school system on a firmer financial footing said on Thursday he was sending layoff notices to all of the district's 5,466 unionized employees.

In a statement posted on the website of Detroit Public Schools, Robert Bobb, the district's temporary head, said notices were being sent to every member of the Detroit Federation of Teachers "in anticipation of a workforce reduction to match the district's declining student enrollment."

Bobb said nearly 250 administrators were receiving the notices, too.

The district is unlikely to eliminate all the teachers. Last year, it sent out 2,000 notices and only a fraction of employees were actually laid off. But the notices are required by the union's current contract with the district. Any layoffs under this latest action won't take effect until late July.

1. Comment following that story:
When students come to kindergarten knowing their ABC's, numbers to at least 20, colors, basic shapes, and can write their first names legibly, the entire educational system would drastically improve. I know there are some bad teachers, just like any profession, but the majority of them are hard working, caring people.

At my son's old elem. school, kindergartners were"tested" on some basics. One of the skills tested was a teacher handed them a picture book backwards and upside down to see how long it would take them to correct it. Over 40% of them did not turn the book around correctly!!!! And this is not an area of poverty-in fact-it is on the affluent side. Too many parents are using the computers, tvs, dvrs, video games, etc. to play with and interact with their kids. Education, manners, rules, socialization, common courtesy, etc. starts in the home.

4. It's going to hit the fan in 2014
When 100% of our kids are not proficient, we'll all be shown the door.
