Our power has been out for 15 hours...snowstorm in the sierras
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:14 PM by FirstLight
we've got about 2 feet of fresh powder at the Lake and I'm sure the ski areas on top got whomped. It is heavy and wet and windy, so the power lines and trees got all messed up...

What has been interesting to me is how much we rely on the simplest things that are dependent on electricity.
Lucky for us we have a woodstove insert and lots of wood, so not only is the house warm, but there's a cooking surface too (which has made for interesting lessons for the kids about the frontier days..)

-but even though I am carrying a candle, I habitually flick the switch as I walk into a room
-the kids are going to bed a whole 2 hours early...bwahaha!
-we had to figure out how to unlock the garage door and open it manually
-d'oh! the garbage disposal doesn't work!
-have to conserve the computer battery and pilfer internet from someone in the area with a wi-fi connect
-The whole street is so freaking dark, it is creepy

As a mountain dweller, i am used to having little hiccups in infrastructure like this, but it is always sobering...

and it makes me think about all the technology we rely on for SO much and how helpless we are without it
almost a scary thought, you know?

5. 45 minutes...
Hang in there bro!

*waves magical hand* - Your power shall be returning within the next 15-20 minutes after the drunk bum who's supposed to fix it gets fired and replaced with someone who KNOWS something about electricity.

Presumably he doesn't have power, since he said he was carrying around a candle.
He said he has a stove, so he can stay warm (at least in that part of the house).

2. Have the western slopes of the Rockies been getting much snow?
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:17 PM by Bobbieo
That snow dictates the runoff for the Colorado River.

7. stay safe and warm.....it is interesting how we have to adapt when
all of our conveniences are removed....the situation has pluses and minuses..the stove at least gives you a cooking surface and provides warmth..

6. Yep, plenty of snow in the Western Slope..
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:24 PM by Hawkeye-X
We're supposed to get hit with a snow storm tomorrow in Denver. 5-10 inches of snow expected. Flurries are expected to start at 9am.

We were *supposed* to have a "white" Christmas, but somehow missed Denver entirely, but the ski towns are getting massive amount of powder

I think the runoff will be fine for next year.

http://www.coloradoski.com/SnowReport/

Snowmass is on the Western Slope, over 31" of snow on it already. Aspen/Vail 34" and Copper Mountain 41"

The mountain closest to Denver is Echo Mountain with 21" of snow.

That gives you a pretty good idea of where our powder numbers are. And we haven't even started January.

22. I understand.
When the power goes out it's always kind of fun (as long as you have heat, food, water and a toilet). Using lamps, candles, fondue pots, etc.

But when the heat is gone, it's another thing altogether. We bought a generator a couple years ago that will power our major stuff. Guess what? Haven't used it yet. Power of prevention :silly:

Hope you're back to normal very soon!

:hi:
