Goodbye, wolves
And it gets worse, according to the Center for Biological Diversity - "the rider also strips citizens of their right to challenge the delisting in court, while preserving anti-wolf lawsuits brought by Wyoming and others."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110416/ap_on_re_us/us_endangered_wolves

"BILLINGS, Mont. – Federal wildlife officials say they will take more than 1,300 gray wolves in the Northern Rockies off the endangered species list within 60 days.

An attachment to the budget bill signed into law Friday by President Barack Obama strips protections from wolves in five Western states...Idaho and Montana plan public wolf hunts this fall. Hunts last year were canceled after a judge ruled the predators remained at risk.

Protections remain in place for wolves in Wyoming because of its shoot-on-sight law for the predators." (What this means, I have no idea.)

1. IIRC the shoot on sight provides that no permit is required
and there is no limit to the number a 'hunter' can take. That's just as you would expect for an eradication program.
Eradication and species conservation can't be reconciled.

2. The chances of wiping out coyotes...
is ZIP. Smart, huge reproductive success, adaptable, small-prey oriented....

Wolves.... I love them, but they aren't adaptable to human activity, only breed the Alphas, and their large-prey feeding makes them vulnerable to hunters.

I'm not knocking them....

But the poor bastards are going to get clobbered by the redneck hunters(?), most of whom are grazing on the cheap on MY federal land.

3. Why in the world do we have to keep giving in to know ...

... nothing ignorant people? The science is clear wolves are good for the environment,
ranchers can be compensated for loss of stock, and if a wolf is persistent problem it can
be shot.

Smart, beautiful, and integral part of a healthy ecosystem that is what wolves are ..... BTW the total
# of unprovoked attacks on humans by a health wolf in N. America is zero.

I went to a lecture by a biologist on what the return of wolves did to improve the Yellowstone
area's ecology and the list was vast.

4. Man will pay for our wanton destruction of the environment and annihilation of species
Fuck the goddamn farmers. This is just another government handout to businesses, who refuse to accept predation of a small fraction of their herd as a cost of doing business. Fuck them.

7. It's the same way they treat women
Like chips in a poker game. No one gets outraged about that.

I'm not saying that justifies them de-listing wolves. It doesn't. It's a stupid and damaging policy, IMO.

but this cartoon always made me laugh anyway. Sort of a peek into the Republican mind wired for fear:
